Daughter with Slight Allergy to Milk.

My daughter who is about to be two tested positive for an allergy to milk. The doctor told us that it wasn't bad (just a slight allergy). This was almost a year ago. Since then she has been on soy milk and has done fine. My question is, Has anyone ever had a child that doesn't have a normal bowel movement? My daughter's stools are hardly ever solid. Though she complains when she does go potty and says that it hurts but its not solid. I just wondered if this could be related to her milk allergy. She is not completely off milk. She eats cheese and other things that have milk in it which the doctor says to be ok as tolerated. She has no other symptons other than loose stools. I have put a call into her doctor but thought that I would ask other moms if they have had any of these problems.

What can I do next?

Hi,
I have a set of twin boys that will be 3 next month! About 1 1/2 years ago my one twins started having very lose and bloody stools several times a day. Of course anytime you see blood in your child's stool it is very alarming. I have ulcerative colitis myself so of course assumed that is what he must have. We took him to a Pediatric GI Doc and they did a colonoscopy and and endoscopy on him at the age of 1 1/2. They said that they believed he might have colitis as well but at his age he could still out grow it. Anyways, they turned 2 last June and we potty trained because he was always so broken out on his bottom from having so many frequent bloody stools. Finally after trying some meds from docs that had potentially bad side affects I decided to just switch him off of cow's milk to soy milk. It took about 1 month for us to get great results and see no more blood or lose stools. About six months later he was tested too for milk allergies and they told us that he is allergic to the protein in the cow's milk. He is NOT lactose intollerant because he still eats cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and so on. The only thing that I changed was his milk intake. It has been 8 months and we are doing great being on soy milk. Until now I never knew there was a difference as far as being lactose intollerant or allergic to the protein in milk. Now I know, and I am glad that I didn't take any other dairy from him at the same time. Hope this helps. Good luck!

The soy milk could be the problem. Soy milk gives me cramps, absolutely VILE gas and diarrhea. Have you tried her on rice milk?

We experienced it too but my son has a gluten allergy. Even though we went gluten free he had loose stools for years. He finally had normal stools when he started taking probiotics. He still takes them regularly. Good luck~

I understand where you are coming from. My son has the opposite effect when he drinks a lot of milk. He gets real constipated. We started noticing that when he needed to go poop he would turn bright red and his bowel movements would be really hard. This started when he was about 1 year old. Which was conviently enough was when we switched to whole milk from formula. We finally found out that the milk was the problem and even soy milk wouldn't help. The doctors prescribed miralax for him that he had to take 2 times a day and that helped a lot. He is seven now and he can have one glass of milk a day and do just fine without the miralax, but if he has more than that he is back in the same boat. He can eat cheese, ice cream, etc. just not straight milk. It was basically trial and error for us. Hope this helps any at all.

I have multiple food sensitivities, including milk. When I eat even a small amount of milk (like the amount of whey powder on McD's french fries) I get a terrible stomach ache and diarrhea until the food has passed. I had had stomach aches and loose stools or constipation my whole life. I finally put two and two together 18 months ago and realized I was getting sick at the Chinese place and Chick-fil-a every time and I was the only one. My first thought was peanut allergy. Thankfully I am not ALLERGIC in that I will ONLY get sick, but I have discovered sensitivities to milk, peanut, and sesame since then. I'm pretty sure I have a problem with either corn or soy, but at this point three is enough. I'm going to wait before doing any more eliminations.

Dairy is a very invasive in mass produced foods. There are few fast foods I can have and even fewer boxed foods. Feel free to email me if you would like more information. :o)

My grandson has food allergies. I would take her completely off all milk products if she has an allergy to milk. You can replace cheese with goat cheese and they make great yogurt and ice cream with coconut milk. Anyway, just try for a couple of weeks and see if this works. If not, she could have other food sensitivities.

Is she allergic to milk or is she lactose intolerant? They are two different things, but both include a problem with diary products. It is my understanding that the milk allergy relates to the milk protein not being digested, causing stomach cramps, bloating, etc. Lactose intolerance relates to an inability to digest lactose (the milk sugar). There's no cramping, but loose stools and bloating. I have been lactose intolerant for over 30 years and use a product called "Lactose Intolerance Therapy." It's taken once a day instead at every meal. Since lactose is in so many things, eventhough I avoid dairy products, I take this therapy daily. I also have used soy milk/soy milk products for over 30 years. Two of my daughters were raised on soy milk. They don't cause soft stool. If anything, it would be the opposite. Your daughter maybe dealing with lactose intolerance which would produce soft/loose stool anytime she has dairy. A combination of dairy products over the course of a day or two, would really cause a problem.

My son had the same problem and the reason was cause he wasnt going enough and he was backed up. I suggest getting some over the counter powder to make her go my son uses gycolax but that a perscription. I believe there is something like it but I cant remember the name. I would definitely see the docter and let him know what is going on. I would talk her off the cheese too for now till then. I hope everything works out.

yes. My daughter has a dairy allergy. She was finally diagnosed in December. Her stools were always runny and soft. She would have 4-5 a day. I had talked with the dr. about a year ago and he tested her stools for bug, infection, etc. Found nothing and just kinda let it lie. She had no other symptoms. This December we all got a stomach bug, hers was worse than everyone elses and she was not getting over the diaherra. When I took her to the dr. this time he noticed she had not gained weight or grown in a year and was actually losing weight. ( she was 23 months). I mentioned I thought she might have a problem with dairy, but not positive. He tested her and it was positive. He said it was mild. However, we found that removing ALL DAIRY from her diet helped. She has formed stools and only 1 a day or every other day. I can tell if she has any diary- from cheese, chocolate, cakes, etc- she ends up with loose stools and now complains her stomach hurts.
After we got all the dairy from her diet and out of her system in two months she grew 1 1/2 inches and gained four pounds. She actually eats now. I suggest eliminating all dairy from her diet for several weeks and see if that helps.

My advice, coming from two kids with milk allergies, both have out grown then. I avoided all milk products, by products, anything that lists casien, butter etc in the ingredients. We had stool issues with my first son and ended up seeing a pediatric gastrointologist who put him on Childrens immodium which he was on it for a while and it helped alot. I know he got mistakes here and there, not everyone pays attention to ingredients, but for the most part, complete avoidance. That is why they are now able to drink milk without any issues. Their allergies to milk are completely gone. We went to the Oklahoma Allergy and Asthma clinic with the boys and I believe they gave great advice, its what they do. Good Luck and if you ever need to talk to someone who's been there... give me a shout.
