Dental Filling During Pregnancy

I had a metal dental filling drilled on and replaced when I was 7 months pregnant in January, and within two weeks I was hospitalized with what the neurologist informed me was an MS attack. I began slurring my words and had weakness in my left hand and left leg. The symptoms were treated with steroids and went away and I gave birth to my son in March. Now I'm concerned that I have exposed myself and my son to mercury and would like advice on ways I might go about finding out if I have, and what precautions to take or ways to detox my system and my son's system. I am particularly concerned about vaccinating my son before I know more about what the dental filling drilling may have exposed us to. As far as I am aware, I never had an MS attack before this incident.

What can I do next?

Hi V.,

My friend had full blown MS of which she completely overcame. She is now a well respected doctor of Naturopathy, a published author and has been on tv, and travels around to speak. She is fascinating and a miracle to me. I am not sure where you're located, but you can check out her website at www.annboroch.com. Her book should answer a lot if not all of your questions and if you are near enough, perhaps you can even get in to see her. Her equipment is state of the art. I would think any Naturopathic doctor would be of benefit to you though. I would look into that before anything else. The MS is caused by an extremely high build up of yeast which attacks one's nervous system basically. If you can, completely CUT OUT your refined sugars- they feed the yeast. Cut out yeast and white flour. Get some Candida Albicans Cleanse capsules (will regulate yeast) for yourself and some Probiotics (will promote growth of healthy bacteria in the intestines). Also, don't put too much energy into MS being a problem for you now or you will make it one. Funny things happen while we're pregnant and then never return. I think this was just one of those quirky things and you'll be fine. The Naturopath will treat you according to your personal needs~ so try and find a good reference for one. Perhaps call Ann's office and see if they can suggest a good one in your area if you're not located around where she is. It's worth it. It's worth it for anyone to do! And the healing that takes place and the way one's body transforms is amazing :)

Best wishes and many blessings to you and your son :)

V.,

Good for you for thinking outside the box. There are so many people who wouldn't make the connection between MS symptoms and mercury poisoning.

My Mom had MS and I did extensive research into the potential causes about 7 years ago and found that mercury is a neurotoxin. Unfortunately my Mom had a great deal of mercury in her mouth and the cost to remove it would have been astronomical for her so she chose to leave it in. I have heard cases when people remove the mercury fillings their chronic immune system issues start to diminish, but not immediately.

Ok, with that said, it is not as easy as just taking them out of the mouth and all is well. Like you said, the mercury may have gotten into your system and that of your sons.

There are natural chelating agents that may be able assist the body in clearing the mercury out but I didn't find it as effective as doing a Master Cleanse and using essential oils. You can do research on the web on how to do a master cleanse. I have done several cleanses over my life and this was the most challenging, but definitely what I needed to get on the road to feeling better. I was advised by a chiropractor that this type of clease is the only one she knows of that cleanses heavy metals from the body.

But I will put a caveat here, this type of cleanse is not for the timid because there is no food, only a drink made from lemons and you don't feel very good for the first few days. Into the third day I felt great.

In regards to how to get any mercury out of your son's body I would suggest getting a book called Essential Desk Reference. It is a great reference for how to use essential oils safely to cleanse the body. I have used the oils referred to in the book safely on my son and many of my clients have used them on their very young babies. (I teach seminars on using essential oils, you can take a peek at www.SweetSmellofHealth.com)

Regarding your son, you are very wise to be concerned about the vaccines. There may still be some vaccines that have thymerserol (mercury derived preservative). Do your homework as to the type of vaccine (lot number as well) before they are given to your son. Some vaccines may be thymerserol free.

When I was considering the vaccine issue when my son I read a very good book title "Immunization: The Reality behind the Myth" by Walene James with a forward written by Robert Mendelsohn, MD. I liked the research presented it helped me make my own decision and that it wasn't over the type hypey. It went vaccine by vaccine and demonstrated the risks and then I could decide which ones I wanted to vaccinate my son against. I personally chose not to vaccinate him, instead I chose to do things naturally to protect his immune system. He is now 12 1/2 and has excellent health. When he was 4 he developed severe allergies and at that time I wondered if I had vaccinated him would he had been a statistic, one of the children who had a severe reaction or worse yet developed autism.

Vaccines are a subject that is very important to go into with both eyes wide open and weigh up the pros and cons and the risks by vaccinating and the risks not vaccinating.

I hope that helps. Good luck.

best regards,

M.

Hello V..

I have been using So-lay for about a month now. I take it just to stay healthy and I noticed that my anxiety has calmed down. I do have mercury fillings in my teeth and attribute that to anxiety. I do not have MS but I thought you might want to take a look at the information. I sell it and you can look at it here and read about it.

It is a natural way to take toxins out of your system. Himalayan salt rock is wonderful for all kinds of things. Let me know if you have any questions.

Good luck in your search

Ask the dentist about your and your son's mercury exposure as a result of the procedure. The amount was probably so small as to not be an issue. And please go back to the neurologist and ask questions about MS, mercury and all of that. It doesn't sound like you know exactly what has happened. Don't try to detox your system (and especially not your baby's) without a professional's assistance if you don't know what you're doing (or even what you are dealing with).

As for your concern about vaccination....mercury is no longer an issue in infant vaccines. Mercury (aka Thimerosol) has been removed from ALL vaccines (all makers, all brands) that are given to infants and children, except for some flu shots and you can ask for mercury-free ones. They don't get flu shots until after age 2 and even then, you don't have to get them. For a great education about what exactly is in each vaccine, as well as what the concerns are about them, get The Vaccine Book by Robert W. Sears, M.D. He also has a good website that gives lots of information and any updates to the book: www.askdrsears.com. I got mine at the library and am almost finished with it. I already feel so much more in control and if I want to re-arrange my son's shot schedule, I know WHY I am doing it.

Good luck to you. Congratulations on your new baby. Don't worry about the mercury in shots.

Do not vaccinate your baby. Please. What happened to your was mercury poisoning and there are several things you can do. You want to look into natural chelating. There are a few things that we do: cod liver oil, selenium, co q10, and the one I really love is

Cilantro Chelation Pesto

4 cloves garlic
1/3 cup Brazil nuts (selenium)
1/3 cup sunflower seeds (cysteine)
1/3 cup pumpkin seeds (zinc, magnesium)
2 cups packed fresh cilantro (coriander, Chinese parsley) (vitamin A)
2/3 cup flaxseed oil
4 tablespoons lemon juice (vitamin C)
2 tsp dulse powder
Sea salt to taste

There are many books and ideas out there on what to do. Where I start is at the www.tacanow.org website because it is run by parents whose children have been damaged by metal toxicity with it resulting in autism and other spectrum disorders. It has different protocols and doctors they have worked with and lots of resource information.

Nursing is best for your baby so be including probiotics in your diet. Good luck and know you aren't crazy.

I would have that filling removed, and replaced with porcelain or the other white stuff they use.
My mother had severe reactions through out her life - never knew why - until she had her amalgam fillings removed at 45 years of age. Then her body had severe reactions from actually missing the metal in her body... It took a good 2 years to get back to "normal".
Ofcourse, no one wanted to blaim the fillings, but my mom just knew.
She too had some very inexplicable reactions/sickness at the age of 5 when she had her first teeth filled with that awful stuff.
Don't use, and for heavens sake don't let them use it on your children!
Can't you be tested for MS? I would certainly digg deeper.

Good luck!

Wow! Good for you for thinking about this. Many people are not aware of the dangers of those silver fillings.
I would suggest you go to a Osteopathic physician. They use many methods to treat heavy metal toxicity such as supplements for cleansing, NAET, accupuncture, etc. There is a doctor in Lake Forest, CA named Jing Li . She is both an MD and a DO. She treated me when I had all my mercury fillings replaced and I feel amazing now!

Congratulations on being a mom!

My husband just had a similar issue around a month ago. He had a filling removed and the next day developed a headache and eventually it become unbearable and I swear I thought he was having a stroke. We went to the ER and they ordered an MRI, they said there was not a tumor and he didn't show signs of a stroke, but there was inflammation which led them to belive it was viral or environmental. It took my husband a few days to connect environmental with having a filling removed. When we finally did, the doctor ordered a mercury blood level and he was 4x the recommended amount. Our doctor was concerned because the half life of mercury in the blood is 72 hours, so a good portion of it would have already made it into his brain and muscles. He has gone forward with IV chelation through our regular physician and his headaches have nearly subsided.

My children were affected by lead poisoning so while I agree that you need to be cautious with chelation, you also need to get heavy metals out if present. There are studies linking lead poisoning to Autism and ADHD. Of course with mercury it is still controversial - it's something to discuss with your pediatrician.

The doctor who is doing the chelation on my husband is Dr. Dan Harper in Solana Beach.

Good luck to you,
D.

Oh dear you must be worried sick. Please don't worry about the filling. The MS attack is a different matter - but is probably unrelated to the filling. Sometimes there are coincidences in life. The concerns for autism and mecury are unfounded. My husband sits on the board of a foundation that funds research on the brain and that is what I am basing my opinion on. Also be very cautious of any detoxing of yourself and particularly of your baby. Detoxing can be very traumatic to the GI system and the herbs used can be potentially toxic and there is little to no regulation on them. Please be well and bless you both,

Your dentist should have used a rubber dam (a plastic shield) to be placed over your tooth to prevent the mercury from entering your body.
My doctor David Allen MD ###-###-#### does chelation therapy which would help detox your body from mercury. your son can be tested with a hair analysis. Also check out www.sb3.com they have great natural products I(transdermal cream)for chelation, MS and autism.

Dear V.,
I am sorry to hear about the MS diagnosis. You would be at the late end of the typical age for this disease to manifest. My brother got MS at age 40 and we have gone through a lot together because of it (and not all of it has been bad). I do know that a scan of the brain will show definitively if there is white matter damage in your brain which is a clear diagnosis of MS. If they have done this, I would assume the diagnosis is correct. Did you by chance have a bad cold or flu before the onset of the MS? In my brother's case, a flu was believed to be the trigger, but who knows- a mercury filling might set something off in a sensitive system. The next step would be to decide how you want to deal with it. I do think you are wise to consider clearing your system of any toxins, so your body can better deal with the MS. My husband and I are not vaccinating our son for this and some other tendencies (including autism) in his family. If you would like any more info from my experience with my brother, feel free to email me.
Blessings,
S.

It seems that although they were closely related in time frame that it restrict your cause to that flling would be putting yourself at risk for not finding the real cause. Do you know that your symptoms are mercury related?

Check with the poison control center and go to the library or online to look at mercury. Was the filling mercury for sure?

Get more info, make sure you don't rule out what could be there.

Dear V.,
Amalgams are the metals used for dental filling. Although they do contain mercury it combines with other metals and this renders stable and safe for use in filling teeth. I do not think you need to be concerned with with the mercury. See http://www.ada.org/public/topics/fillings.asp

I would be more concerned about the steroids used to treat your MS. But I am sure that it was necessary to do because of the Multiple Sclerosis. I am sorry to hear that you have received that diagnosis and pray that it will be a long time in remission. As you probably know MS has genetic predisposition http://www.umm.edu/patiented/articles/what_causes_multipl...
The pregnancy not the dental drilling may be the trigger of the onset.
My prayers will be with you as you face this disease. I have a good friend who has had it for years. She was a teacher and continued to teach until almost retirement age.
God bless you and you new son.

First off, congrats on your new baby boy! I too had a mercury filling removed while pregnant. Not my dentists first choice but he said the dam would keep most if not all from being ingested and that just having a mercury filling is leaching into my system anyway. At this point, I don't know how much to believe but my son is now 3, no problems, etc.. As for vaccines, I am selective on what my kids get and delay most that I do give them. A friend sent me this site when we were looking for more information regarding mercury. Somewhere on this site, is this guys phone number, he will give a free 10 minute consult. http://www.mercuryfreenow.com/tom/consultation.html

I was diagnosed with MS 3 years ago, between having my 2 children (5 yr old & 9 mo old) - it has a wide range of symptoms and is not easily diagnosed. The theory about mercury/fillings is often mentioned, but I'm not sure if there's proof behind it? (I've never had a cavity.) I saw other responses to your question that mentioned metal toxicity, yeast, etc, but none of these things is the proven cause of MS. I heard a dcotor from the Mayo Clinic speak that said 'We will probably find a cure before we know the cause'. I know there is something called chelation therapy that can remove metal elements from the body, but I don't know too much about it. If you want to read more about MS, the National MS Society website is great - www.nmss.org . If you get more testing done (MRI to check for brain lesions, spinal tap, etc) and your diagnosis is confirmed, then there are support groups that are helpful. I have never taken any medications yet (they are only injections that 'manage' the disease), but there are exciting new medicines in development now! But if you are worried about your son, the general consensus is that it is not a genetic disease. There is more debate right now about mercury in vaccinations, so I would check with your pediatrician about mercury exposure? Good luck! (PS. Most pregnant women do not experience MS attacks, therefore they are researching an estriol pill that mimics the body's hormones during pregnancy?)

You are right to be concerned. I wouldn't vaccinate until you have a handle on this (if you choose to vaccinate at all). As far as detoxing your system is concerned, look at a website called mercola.com. Dr. Mercola has a whole chelation regimen, although, personally, I would want to do this under supervision. There must be someone locally who does this. Dr. Jay Gordon in Santa Monica maybe.
