Hi Ladies,

I'm really praying that one of you can help me. I just had my second child (a girl) on Thursday night, and I am having MAJOR ISSUES with breastfeeding. I did nurse my son for about a year, but I am having a lot of difficulty successfully feeding my daughter.

Can anyone recommend a really terrific and competant Lactation Consultant? I did have somebody (my pedi's recommendation) out here yesterday, but it's still not really working for me and I'm in so much pain!

I'm located in the southwest side of the city so somebody relatively close by would be ideal.

Thanks so much!

What can I do next?

Hi L.,

You so have my sympathies! The woman who runs Woman's Work in Rice Village is a great lactation consultant, and she used to make house calls -- I don't know if she does now. I am sorry I don't remember her name -- my struggle to breastfeed was so awful I've forgotten a lot of it. But she is excellent, and of course the sooner you get help the better.

Good luck! And congratulations on your new baby -- don't lose a moment of the joy of your bond with her over worrying about breastfeeding -- she'll be fine no matter what, and while it is certainly good to breastfeed as much as possible, I have become convinced that in my case an over-focus on breastfeeding, which I just wasn't able to manage despite excellent lactation consulting and lots of technological and other interventions, filled my early days of motherhood with despair and worry, and you know what? -- you and your baby deserve better than that. So, good luck, bf is great, do your best, but if you find this is messing up the flow of other good things into your baby, such as joy, pride, acceptance and calm, bear in mind the baby needs those even more than breast milk.

love,
M.

I used Marlene Kelly when I had my son and she seemed to help. She was recommended by my pediatrician and I was able to meet her in my pedi's office so that insurance would cover it. She will come to the house too, I think. Her number is ###-###-####. Good luck. I know how tough it is. I was in tears when I was talking to her and this is my second baby that I have nursed too. They are all different!

I recently went to A Woman's Work in Rice Village to visit Sandy. She is the lactation consultant and is soooooo worth seeing!!! She really made a difference for me! I have 2 other children and had a hard time breast feeding my second child so when I had the third (22 months later) I went to her. (NO problems with the first).

She helped me in the hospital....never came to my home, so I have no idea how much she costs. She was very helpful in the hospital though.

Best of luck!

Hi L.,

I recommend Susan Dial. She is located in Katy, TX and here is her website: http://www.lactationlifelines.net/mainpage.html. She came to my house twice and she was a life saver for me. It took me 7 weeks to feel completely comfortable with breast feeding.

Have you tried calling the lactation help line at Women's Hospital? I called them a couple of times when I was breastfeeding my daughter and they never even had to come out to my house - they helped me resolve my issues over the phone! I breastfed my daughter successfully for 17 months. Just contact the main information line and they can direct you ###-###-####(.

Also, have you looked into calling La Leche League, or joining one of their local groups. They have groups everywhere.
