Diaper Changing Craziness

Hi Moms! I am looking for some advice when changing my 9 month old's diapers. Not always, but most of the time she will begin to squirm and toss and turn on her changing table so she can be on her tummy and tries to crawl on her table. As soon as we put her down to change her, she starts twisting and flopping around. As you can imagine, this is especially difficult if she has a poopy diaper. I have tried giving her objects or toys for her to hold while we change the diaper, but that distraction only lasts a few seconds. I have also tried changing her in a different places like the floor or a bed. - same result. I do use the changing table straps to "secure" her in but she is able to turn over under the strap. She gets so squirmy that I fear she will fall off her changing table. There have been times I have had to physically hold her down almost putting my weight into her to keep her from moving while we change the diaper. I have to admit, sometimes it cracks me up, but for her safety, I need to find a solution. Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

squirmy changes are a phase, and in our house it was a long one! Move to the floor for her saftey, lay down a portable changing pad for the messy ones. You are t the stage where you find how fast you can change a diaper, haha. During that small distraction from the toy! Good luck.

Standing changes are good! I loved those pampers cruisers they came out when my daughter was 11 months and were a lifesave!

I just wanted to let you know this behavior is completely normal! She's got too much to do, there's absolutely no way she wants to take any time out of her day to change a diaper.

Try giving her "forbidden" things to play with during diaper changes. For instance, a cell phone, remote, flashlight, the diaper creme (just make sure it's closed securely), etc. Try something new each time and just rotate them. Moving her to the floor for diaper changes from now on is a very good idea. I can tell you from experience, it will probably only get worse from here on out. I've even started to master changing diapers while my daughter is standing up.

These are the things they should teach you in those baby classes!

I always change my son on the floor (or maybe in the middle of my bed) with a changing pad beneath him, and talk to him about what I am doing (or anything really that will hold the attention). Lately, I found another 'trick' that works really well. Right before changing, I hold him close and tell him I need to change his diaper and I need him to help me. Little kiddos love to be able to help! I tell him he can help me by staying on his back until I am finished. He will look up at me and let me do what needs to be done. When I am finished, we wash both (or rather all four) of our hands and I tell him what a good job he did and how helpful it was for him to be still. He is now 13 months, but it might work for you as well! Try it....it sure relieved my frustration and NO SPANKINGS were ever needed!!!

Oh -how I remember that phase! It started for us as soon as my now 2 1/2 year old learned how to roll over and it lasted a long time. That was the end of the changing table. We had to move to the floor for all diaper changes. Like someone else had mentioned we would let her play with "forbidden items" during the diaper change: cell phone, calculator, flashlight, my watch...
When she got bored with those things we had to move the diaper changes to the floor in front of the TV. 2 minutes of a Winnie the Pooh video would keep her still long enough to get the job done.
