Diaper Genie or Arm&Hammer??

Wow. I haven't been on this website in a couple years! I am so glad I can come back here now that I am pregnant with number two!

My question: We live out in the country. No trash pick-up, which means i have to put stinky trash in my car or in my truck and take it "to town." That doesn't happen every other day.... so I want the best way to keep the poopy diapers from stinking up my house. I see a few options out there. I know that they can be expensive too and want y'all's opinion before I go make a purchase. So what do you ladies recommend? What didn't work?

Thanks!

UPDATE: Looks like Diaper Genie is NOT the best way to go according to most if not all of y'all. No wonder I see oodles of those Genie things at the kid-resale shops! I have considered cloth but can't say it's my favorite option. Tossing the bags outside is a possible option so long as I find a way to keep raccoons and mice and other critters away (I once threw a bag of vomit outside and it was gone in the morning. Gross critters around here!) We have employees come to our house every day. Maybe if I buy some scented trashbags, the employees would be more likely to take it home and toss it in their apartment complex trash. Thanks! More posts welcome! I like reading ideas y'all have and what worked/didn't for you. Gamma - I like your idea. I will look into it!

What can I do next?

I hated the Diaper Genie. I still have memories of that smell and my daughter is almost 18 years old. If I was in the country with no trash pick up, I'd go with cloth and wash them myself. Plus it's better for the environment than disposables.

Ugh - I hated the diaper genie - after a few months of making smelly diaper "sausage" I got rid of the thing. I used small plastic bags - put the wet diapers in there until the smelly one came then tied it up and put it and jsut threw them out more often. While I understand you don't have pickup isn't there a place outside where garbage is stored? If not then use cloth. My sister did that with her son since he was allergic to everything - and she hung them dry in the sun and they became bright white without bleach.

I thought the diaper genie was disgusting!
I preferred to bag the soiled diapers and move them to an OUTSIDE trash can ASAP.
And do people realize they should dump poop from poop diapers into the toilet when possible? Lol

If I was in your situation, I'd consider cloth diapering, and getting rid of the problem of stinky diaper trash.

If you go with disposables, once you're past the point of liquidy newborn breastmilk poops (which don't stink badly), and you're dealing with more solid poop, flush the poop down the toilet before throwing the diaper away.\

I don't have suggestions on specific diaper pails, it's been 15 years since I had a baby, we had twice weekly trash pickup, and I worked, so I didn't deal with so many diapers at home. Good luck

Diaper Genie was the worst investment we made. I could still smell it and putting the bags in, leaning over a stench filled canister....yuck.

I live in the country too. We built a....small rectangle box, I think it's 3'-4'X2'-3', with flats of wood, to put the larger trash cans in. We put the kitchen/pull up trash out there in Walmart sacks. It's pretty easy to pop open the back door and toss the bag towards that big can. It's not our primary entrance/exit door.

Hubby also keeps excess bags of trash in the back of his truck. Then when he goes to town he has several large bags to unload somewhere.

Also, we found a guy who would come pick up our trash in his pickup and we pay him $30 per month. He was looking for something he could do to bring in extra money. He gets paid once per month but takes the trash from all the families he works for now to the dump each day. It cost him about $15 to dump his truck daily and he's making $30 per month from about 50 families out here. By advertising for someone to manage our trash an older gentleman has a new source of income and feels useful.

When the babies are small (less than 9 months or so?) the diaper genie works fine. The only smell issues I had with it were when others used it besides me and they didn't twist it enough... they just shoved the diaper in and gave it a half twist and called it done. Umm. NO. Twist that sucker a good 2-3 FULL TURNS. It really did keep the smell intact. Although, you learn over time to hate that fake baby powdery smell that they infuse into the liners for it.

But, once baby grows and the diapers are bigger and only about 9 will fit inside before you have to empty it, then it just becomes too much work for the amount of benefit you get out of it.

We love our Arm & Hammer. Refills can be pricey - shop around, Walmart has them 15.25 for $30 right now. We used 1 per week. We've used it for 3+ years and rarely had to use more than one bag per week.

Put the stinky diapers in your basic Walmart plastic bag. I save all bags for this reason. Wrap tightly and put in garbage can. I would think it is in garage right. We have trash pick up once a week and it is not a problem.

the cheap solution is..

buy a smallish garbage can with a tight lid. (perhaps a diaper pail).. line the can with a trash bag.. whenever there is a poop diaper.. put the diaper in a free leftover grocery bag.. tie it tight and put in the trash can .. close the lid..

whent he can is full. or when it is tiem to go to the trash dump.. tie up the big bag and take the stink away.. maybe you could keep the can in the garage?? to keep critters away.. it shouldn't stink if the diapers are individually bagged and tied.. and the lid fits tight..

A lot of the problem is the poop left in the diaper. If you would just rinse in the toilet the part of the stench would be solved.

The other alternative is cloth diapers and washing them on a regular basis. When my kids were born there were no disposable diapers and the ones that were around were very very costly.
