Hello All~

Funny, I just posted a response to another mom about using Boudreaux's Butt Paste for diaper rash and now it's not working for us. Our 7 wk old has diaper rash to the point that her skin is broken and almost bleeding. This is the 2nd time & we've tried everything. The remedy from the first go round is not working & I am at a loss now. She is changed every 2 hours and as needed. We tried SSD (rx from doc), Neosporin, Monkey Butt, Tri-Derma, Burt's Bees, Triple Paste, Vaseline, powder, regular zinc oxide 40%, A & D, clotrimazole, cornstarch, browned flour, combos of the aforementioned products, cloth diapers, and chlorine free diapers. We use all natural wipes (free of chemicals/perfumes) and rinse her behind with cool water. She also gets plenty of air between diaper changes and is completely dry before getting sealed up again. NOTHING is working. I am at a complete loss. Are there other products out there? Am I doing something wrong? Her poor butt is raw and she cries when she goes to the bathroom. Does anybody have any advice?

Updated: Forgot to mention this but DD is strictly on Nutramigen due to colic. Thanks Ladies! :-)

So What Happened?

Looks like DD has a staph infection. She is on meds now and they appear to be working so far. She still has a severe rash for which we are using the California Baby calming collection (wash, cream, powder). The tea tree and other oils seem to be very calming to her as she hasn't been screaming at diaper changes over the last couple of days. Thanks to you all for the responses! Happy Holidays!!! :-)

It could be a yeast infection. My son was on Nutramigen also and had a few yeast infections. My ped said to use Lotrimin, the stuff for fungus on his bottom and no other diaper cream until it cleared. It took a couple of days and then he was back to normal. I buy the generic brand of it and it worked great. Good luck and I hope it clears up soon.

I would call and get her back into the Dr but in the mean time, Mix 50% Aquaphor and 50% Maalox. I heard it works wonders. My pedi's office recommends it.

hi there- i am sorry you are going through that. I have not read the other answers, so if this is a repeat, i am sorry. we use lansinoh breastfed wipes which are the best besides soap and water, which was impossible for us. and a then used a german diaper cream called Bayer Bepanthen Ointment. I have only had to buy 1 tube so far, and have a 2 1/2 yr old, and a 6mo old. Neither have had a bad rash thank heavens!
you can buy the Bepanthen on Amazon, or at the drug store in Lincoln Square. it's costly, but i've had my tube for 2 kiddos so far :)
Good Luck, hope you find something that works for you.

It might be yeast or a staph infection. I would take her back to the doc to have it looked at.

I would also try to stick with one method for a few days.Like anything, it takes a bit for the creams to work. If it's a really bad rash, you might not notice a change right away. I would also start changing her every hour. Even a tiny bit of urine in the diaper can make the rash worse. Make sure you slather the cream on really really thick. Don't rub it in. You should be able to visibly see the cream.

Most rashes are caused from the inside out. She is likely allergic to something that she is consuming. Many babies have reactions to casein (milk protein) and if they are breastfed, it could be that or something else in her diet.

My daughter's reaction to dairy in my diet was this:
Diaper rash that looked like cigarette burns
Foamy, mucous-like poops, sometimes bright green or streaky
Spitting up

She reacted to these other things I ate with fussiness and the rash:
onions
spinach (the #1 veggie allergy- who knew!)
citrus (orange juice, tomatoes, etc)
sweet potatoes and pumpkin

I would get her off of dairy for at least a month. We saw some immediate improvement, but if I would even LICK my finger - just that much dairy would send her over the edge again :( Some babies are more sensitive than others. Dairy is hidden in a lot of processed foods, so be very careful if you are nursing.

In the meantime, if you are breastfeeding, you can squirt your milk on her diaper rash and that should help too- it's antibacterial. Plain extra-virgin coconut oil or Calendula oil or lotion (Weleda is a good brand- try the health food stores for this and the coconut oil) will help too.

Ask your doc if she might have a yeast infection. My daughter had severe diaper rash, which then turned into a yeast infection. Yeast infections are VERY red and look a lot like diaper rash. Diaper ointments will not clear up yeast infection -- you need a prescription anti-fungal cream.

Also, my daughters rash and yeast infection kept coming back. Our doc finally helped us figure out that the acid from the mandarin oranges she was eating was causing irritation in her diaper area. As soon as I stopped feeding her oranges, the problem cleared up! I'm sure this isn't your issue, since your baby is too young for table food, but I thought I'd mention it.

You can try milk of magnesia original. Pour a cap full on the affect area it will be a little runny but let it air dry for about 5 mins then diaper. Next change should see a small improvement. If you are nursing you can also try to put breast milk on the are too. Good Luck!

Everytime I thought I couldn't try anything else, it turns out to be a yeast infection. She may need an oral med to get rid of it, so go to the dr. But I keep an antifungal lotion (athletes foot cream) in the diaper basket for when I can't seem to get rid of the redness and it usually works in a day. I also use Huggies pure and natural, it is the only diaper that doesn't irritate my girl. Good luck!

I swore by DRC (Diaper Rash Cream) and you could get it at Walgreens. If it is not on the shelf, just ask the Pharmacist, and it is behind there (but over the counter). It worked magic for both of my kids that had the exact same problem with their poor buppy.... GOOD LUCK!!! Also, if you are nursing, breast milk is a cure all as well!!!! Let us know!!!

My little one had a terrible diaper rash too, and it only improved when we started using Huggies Pure and Natural diapers, which have no perfumes and very little dye. Also, my bro-in-law is a pediatric nurse and recommended Triple Paste instead of Boudreaux's, saying Triple Paste is what they use for the infants in the hospital. You may want to give that a try too! Good luck!

I would keep a puppy pad under her and let her go without a diaper! and put on triple paste so thick that nothing can touch her butt. Only air will heal it. She may very well have a very acidic stool and nothing but air will protect her butt.

I know it is late fall but, turn up the heat, take off the diaper, and let her air out during the day, all day. At night, since she is only 7 weeks, put her in a bed next to you and change her when needed.

Poor thing! Best of luck Mom!

We used to have terrible diaper rash problems until I posted here and someone suggested Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE). They sell it at Whole Foods, a little pricey, but it lasts forever. Put about 30 drops into a spray bottle of distilled water. During diaper change, after wiping and cleaning her, spray onto her bottom and let dry (I usually wipe it gently with a dry cloth to make sure she's totally dry before putting a new diaper on her). This finally cleared up the diaper rash for good!

I swear by bag balm. I have used it on all 4 kids. I remember when my first was an infant and somebody passed this advice on to me. They sent me to the 1 drugstore in the county that sold it (now it's everywhere)! You may able to even find it online now. It's in a little green tin. Don't be alarmed by the product use description. It cleared every rash up my kids came down with within 24 hours.

It sounds like you are doing all the "right" things. Sorry it isn't working. Lanolin (that is used for your nipples when breastfeeding) worked wonders for our older daughters rash when nothing else would, and I still use it as my go to diaper cream on our youngest.

My son is also strictly on Nutramigen and he has had a HORRIBLE diaper rash for the last 2 weeks. (open sores) Like you I've tried everything. 2 things have worked for us. 1. Triple Paste mixed with Malox. and 2. Brew some liptons tea and dab her rear end with the liquid using a cotton ball. The Triple Paste with Malox worked the best. Good Luck. Oh...BTW....our Dr. told us about the Malox.

My daughter kept getting minor diaper rashes even though we were using cloth diapers. I found making up a spray bottle of Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) of 30 drops to 8 oz of distilled water and then spraying it on her bottom every time we changed her solved our problem. You can get GSE it Fruitful Yield in the yeast/candida area. It's a natural anti-fungal and can be added to the washing water of the diapers too. It worked for our friend's daughter too that just couldn't get rid of her rash.

Also, sometimes the wipes can be the cause and so just go straight to washcloths and water or water with GSE. Another friend of mine had that be her son's problem too.

Never use diaper rash creams with cloth diapers as you will ruin their absorbency.

I hope it clears up soon.

My daughter had really bad diaper rash too. We switched from cloth diapers to Huggies Pure and Natural. The disposables were actually better at keeping her dry. Also if she only pees and there is still paste on her butt it's better not to wipe and aggravate it more. If you must just lightly pat. Diaper-free time is the best cure though. For paste we used California Baby Diaper Rash Cream.

I liked Motherlove Diaper Cream and Rash. I have found that any cream needs to be rotated a bit after a while, I'm not sure why. It sounds like you have used a lot of different things, how long have you used each? I'm not sure what type of diapers you use, but I would try the most absorbent you can find (I think I used the huggies stay dry?). My daughter went through this right about this age, and it just seemed to be the moisture. The disposable are able to wick that moisture away so much more. Also, if you can let her spend some of her wake time with no diaper on, that helps (just a towel or something underneath her. And, if she just pees, let her air dry, the wiping can irritate. I think it took me about 2 weeks to resolve this with all my experimenting.

Poor baby! I second the previous poster who recommended breastmilk. I've used Desitin a number of times, but in some diaper rash cases, it's just too rough on the skin. What I do is squeeze a little breastmilk into a shot glass - you don't need much, & apply it all over the rash. I always find that my son, who was just screaming in pain & protesting over another diaper change, would instantly calm & start smiling again, after only a minute. Breastmilk is not only antibacterial, but it's a pain reliever & helps skin heal. That's also why they recommend using your own breastmilk if you have sore or cracked nipples - it works much better & hurts less than using gels or creams. I would also highly recommend seeing the doctor, to rule out any other infections or causes. Hope that helps - good luck!
