Diaper Rash - Newtown, PA

Does anyone have any good remedies for a very bad diaper rash that looks like sunburn? My 14 month old is screaming every time I change her. She cries and holds her butt when she falls down. I have been putting Desitan on her with every change. I soaked her in a bath which she screamed the entire time! This is her first one...

What can I do next?

Try an antifungal like Lotramin. My daughter had a diaper rash like you are describing and my pediatrician told me she had a fungal infection and Lotramin would clear it up. It worked really well.

Sunlight! Let her run bare bottomed around the yard for a little while in the sun. Fresh air and sunlight will do wonders for diaper rash caused by just about anything.

This happened to my daughter and when I took her to the doctor they had me use some anti-fungus cream. I would contact the doctor. It wasn't rare, but it wasn't the usual diaper rash so the diaper cream wasn't doing anything.

I've found the best way to cure bad diaper rash is a light coating of Lotrimin (yes, the same kind for athlete's foot). let it air dry, then a thick coating of Triple Paste. It's more expensive, but it's the only kind I use after trying almost every other brand. Also important to change the diaper as frequently as possible.
This is the remedy my Dr. recomeneded and my sister in law and it works. After about three diaper changes, you'll see a dramatic improvement. Hope this helps, I know how painful they get for the little ones.

Hi R.. I think you should call your pediatrician. It could be fungal. But you can also try Boudreaux's Butt Paste. It works great. You can get it at Babies R Us, Target, etc. Also, allow the baby's butt to completely dry before putting another diaper on. When my daughter has diaper rash, I let her play totally naked for a while to air it out. It really does work. I don't suggest you put her in water--moisture makes it worse. But honestly, I think you should call the doctor and get their recommendations as well. Good luck

Have you ever made homemade stuff? Take some flour and brown it in a cast iron pan, has to be cast iron or will not work. It takes a little while to make this. After it is made apply it like you would baby powder to the rash. It is the only thing that I got to work on my children. Any questions just ask. Hope it helps.

Dab her off with a piece of soft TP, and let it dry - without the daiper on if you can! Then, put some treatment on it. We use Butt Paste! It's great. The soaking only made it worse and more painful, becasuse in order to heal it needs to dry. Then the Butt Paste can create a barrier for any other wetness.

We use PINXAV (PINK SALVE) for the scalded diaper rash. At every diaper change I soak the baby in some cool water, NO SOAP! air dry and apply Pinxav, it works like a charm, rash is diminished within an hour. It is a pink cream that feels cool and takes the heat away from the acid burn rash. I found it online, and in some super walmarts. It is made in Cleavland OH, so I do not know why it is not EVERYWHERE! Works great. If you can't find this try regular malox for acid indigestion. Works like a charm in a pinch just mop it on with a soft cloth.

Sincerely,

Switch to Balmex diaper creme. It seems to heal bad diaper rashes quicker. My daughter had a severe rash like you are describing and the more Desitin I used the worse it got. Utilizing lots of Balmex and allowing her to leave her diaper off for as long as possible seemed to heal it the best.

On top of everything else you are trying you might want to add some Aveeno Oatmeal to her bath and let her sit in it as long as she wants. We did this with our daughter a few times when she had really bad rashes. I had to nearly force her to sit down but after the initial shock of the water, she would settle down and refuse to get out! We also bathed her in the kitchen sink so the concentration of Aveeno was stronger than in the bath tub. I would also let her run around without a diaper.

Desitin made it worse for my daughter's sensitive skin. And be careful of the advice of antifungals - clotrimazole and Lotrimin, despite OTC, should only be used if your doctor suggests it. We used clotrimazole on my daughter when she had "pinpricks" of red, which apparently was a yeast infection. But there is some strict guidelines for using any steroid, let alone on a child, so don't just "try it" without talking to your doc first.

I swear by Triple Paste, plus a cool bath with a little baking soda in it. And the best advice my friends all gave me - "air time". Take advantage of the nice weather and let her run "free" outside a bit (or on an old shower curtain at home or on any surface that can be cleaned easily).

We also switched to plain Dove soap and water for a while, then I reintroduced sensitive wipes. That's made a difference too.

Finally, swap her food back to "bland" for a few days- the acidity of a lot of foods (fruit, veg) seemed to contribute when things were at their worst, so try the same thing you would do if she had been vomiting - Bananas, Rice, Apples, Toast (plus potatoes and cheese). Just until the bottom heals itself! Good luck!

It could be a yeast infection. Was she on antibiotics recently? You can try over the counter clotrimazole (in athletes foot section) a thin layer twice a day. I've also used a probiotic powder that you mix with formula or other liquid that is especially made for infants (found at health food stores). If it doesn't improve you should see her doctor.

If the rash doesn't seem to be getting better it may be a good idea to call your little ones doctor. Sometimes a baby will pick up a fungus infection in the diaper area and she may need a little anti fungus cream to put on the rash. Remember when my daughter got her first diaper rash too and it broke my heart. One time she had a fungus infection and as soon as I got the cream it cleared right up.

I've always used Dyprotex on my girls. It works wonders and it has a sponge-like applicator so it's less messy than the ones you have to apply with your fingers. Walgreen's carries it- before we had Walgreen's in our area I used to order it on-line because it was sooo great. Also my ped. told me if there is just urine don't use a wipe everytime, for a bm use a warm, wet washclothe. But bottom line (no pun intended) if it hasn't cleared up after a few days of treatment, it's probably a yeast infection.

My daughter often had terrible diaper rash and I used a cream called Calmoseptine. It is a combination of zinc oxide (same ingredient in Balmex only much stronger) and a topical pain reliever. I love it! It always worked like magic on my daughter. In most pharmacies it is kept behind the pharmacy but you do not need a presciption. If it doesn't improve I would also have her seen by the pediatrician.

HI R.. Go to the nearest Giant Eagle Pharmacy and ask them to order: pinxav (pronounced pink salve). A four oz tube is $4.99 and will last you a long time. In Akron, Ohio they use it at Children's Hospital and it works on every rash I have ever seen on a baby's/toddler's/adult's behind!! If they give you a hard time about it tell them that the Giant Eagle #4022 in Cuyahoga Falls, OH ###-###-####) carries it and assured me that any Giant Eagle can order it. I bought a tube there on 6-14-08 when I was there for the weekend. You can also order it on line at www.pinxav.com

You could try A&D ointment, or an aveno oatmeal bath. You might also want to change the brand of diaper your using to see if that helps. Have you changed diaper brands or laundry stuff recently? I tried a new diaper on my oldest once and she got a rash like that within hours...as soon as I gave her a bath and put her back into the brand I had been using with some pinxav she was fine. Good luck!!

Hi R.,
The best inexpensive remedy that I have tried and is very true throuhgh all 4 of my kids is Vaseline. My mother -in-law told me about it 14 years ago when my son got the worst ever diaper rash in the middle of summer. It worked great and I have used it ever since and still use it on my kids as they have gotten older. You can get the powder scented vaseline which works just as well. Apply with every diaper change and it puts up a barrier and heals the affected area. Best of luck and enjoy your summer rash free!

I completely agree with everyone who said Triple Paste- it has been a life saver as my daughter has frequent problems with food sensitivities. None of the other creams work for her. also, our pediatrician said we could use neosporin, which helped for some of the really bad ones too. with the warmer weather, if you can let her run around without a diaper for a little bit each day, that can help as well (I try to do this outside in the yard to cut down on cleanups). the thing to remember if you can is use a small layer of cream even if she doesn't have a rash- it can help prevent it. Good luck, I know how hard it is to see them in so much pain.

First, I agree with the mom about the alcohol free wipes or use a wet rag instead of wipes. The alcohol not only burns their little bottoms, it can make the diaper rash worse. I used A&D for my son most of the time and it worked. I also let him run around naked for a few minutes after his diaper change to let the air hit his bottom. If the diaper rash was really bad I would use Eucerin but they didn't have Aquaphor back then...if it's made from the same people that make Eucerin that may work too. My sister likes it for eczema.

Hi R.! My daughter had the same problem. She is very sensitive so she use to get them all the time. So, we put everyone's advice together (including the doctor's) and came up with the perfect combination. We use a little anti-fungal cream, lots of Desitan, and some vasoline when a rash is present. We would apply this combination about four times a day. We only use the wipes if she has a bile movement. When she has a diaper rash, she wears dresses and nightgowns to allow better air flow. We would make her bath water a little cooler (about 94 degrees) when she has a rash. It works like a charm. As soon as we see a little redness, we use the combination above and it's gone before it starts.

I had this very problem, my guy had NEVER had a diaper rash.... and then this REALLY bad one that looked like sunburn, it actually craked and bled in some places - I felt HORRIBLE-my poor guy! He'd thrown a bunch of my fancy expensive soap in the tub that day and i didn't think much about it, then that afternoon his butt looked burnt and he was miserable... he drinks bathwater and it turned out that soap had citrus, lime, grapefruit... OMG! So the acidity in her juice or maybe something she ate or drank was too citrus or acidic that "burnt" a little in her diaper...

We'd tried ALL the creams as well... Here's what we were told to do.. Frequent baths with BAKING SODA. and Lotrimin foot fungus cream (warm dark places, ya know) it's in the foot care aisle. and neosporin. It worked! And hold off on WIPES, they can make it burn more, even unscented... they all have some alcohol in them, use PT or TP with water if you can.

BEST OF LUCK!! Hope her lil tush feels better soon!!

No more desitin. it sounds like your daughter's rash has turned into a yeast infection - since the weather is warm let her go bare butt as much as possible. When you do put a diaper on her, cover the rash with Corn Starch - right from the kitchen cabs. Do not use anything wet like desitin b/c at this point you need to dry the rash out for it to heal. My oldest used to get terrible diaper rashes that looked like sunburn and nothing worked except for the corn starch. I used to put it in a cheese shaker to keep it neat. Good luck!

I have found that Triple Paste is the best. My son is 23 months old and has Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). Thankfully he has a very mild case of it, but all and all he still does have it. His little butt is very sensitive and he breaks out with diaper rash easily and then they go into blisters that can bleed. EB is a genetic skin disorder that leaves the skin very fragile, so many people with it have constant blisters. I have tried every cream out there and Triple Paste seems to be the best. I use it at every diaper change, put it on thick. Good luck with it, I know how hard it is too see your little one in pain.

My son is VERY prone to get diaper rash. I use the triple paste - it is called precisely that Triple Paste. They sell small tubes at Target and big tubs at CVS. It is more expensive than Desitin but it works - it usually clears up the rash in 24 hours.

Give it a try.

A.

PS Also chnage those diapers frequently. A damp diaper is agony on diaper rash and makes it worse. Use the triple paste at EVERY change and use a lot of it. Keep using it even when the rash clears up for at least a few days.

Corn starch or baking soda on the butt like powder works wonders. I also put some in the bath tub with him to help and I don't think it hurts as much. My son is 2 1/2 and get frequent diaper rashes and this really seems to help.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

call your pediatrician...they will perscribe something. It worked recently for my daughter. Be careful in bath in the meantime, that usually hurts them. I just rinsed my daughter off in the tub standing up until the rash was healed.

Don't use creamy desitin or balmax...not enough zinc oxide (only 10% or so). Go with the original..or something that contains at least 40%. Be sure to DRY the diaper area (stop using baby wipes for awhile...use a warm wash cloth instead and pat dry). Then liberally apply the 40% zinc oxide cream. This DOES work!!!! If you don't notice an improvement within 3 days...go to your doctor.

Hope this helps!

use a plain warm wet washcloth. do not use baby wipes right now as they have alcohol in them and probably burn her diaper rash. try bordeaux butt paste. if that does not help in a few days, i would call the doctor. she could have a yeast infection where the diaper rash is and need a prescription cream.

I used Triple Paste. My son's was so bad a few times that it actually blistered! The Triple Paste worked wonderfully. Put it on the diaper if it's too painfully to put on her bottom. I also let him run around diaper free as much as possible.
I also just read in the Super Baby Food book that Crisco works as a diaper rash cream. However, I've never used it.

Triple Paste works great! If you think it might be a yeast infection too you can mix anti fungal cream(OTC Lotrimin) with the Triple Paste. Hope this helps!

The one cream I could always turn to was Triple Paste when the diaper rash was bad. It is thicker, maybe a bit harder to spread but works like magic. But make sure its not a yeast infection, which my son had only once but it truly was the worst which the pedi recommended some concoction that I don't remember. Sorry I couldn't be more help!

A & D ointment is the best stuff out there for diaper rash. Put it on every time you change her and you will see a noticable difference in a day. Also try to let her air dry between changes as much as possible. Switch to using wet washcloths instead of babywipes until it heals. The chemicals in the wipes sting diaper rash skin.

if it is diaper rash Triple paste is wonderful and avalable at walmart, drug stores or target. It does sound like a yeast infection which are common and easlily treated with gyne-lotrimin3 spread over the sore area 3 x a day. This is what my doc told me with out even seeing my daughters rash and it cleared up in 24 hours.

A product called Triple Paste. You can get it at any drug store, Target, etc. It's a very thick diaper rash cream. Works like a charm. I used it for my two boys.

Hi,

My son used to get terrible diaper rash (he's 5 1/2 now). I remember standing in the baby aisle at Target looking at all the creams and feeling very confused. When I looked, all the products had the same ingredient (whatever is in Desitin, that is what we used too) except A&D origional. I used the A&D on my son when his diaper rash got really bad, like what you describe, and it cleared it up. I also changed him more frequently until the rash went away, like every 1 1/2 hours. I know it is hard since they are so upset but it was the only thing that worked for me. With my second son, i will now sometimes combine Desitin and A&D. Hope this helps!

Hi R.,

My 11 month old daughter occasionally gets a diaper rash and I have used every cream under the sun and the doctor even told me cortaid cream, but what I have found is the best remedy is CALDESCENE powder. I think the spelling is wrong, but you get the point. It worked wonders absorbing excess moisture. Give that a try. You should be able to get it at CVS/Rite Aid etc...

good luck.

I have two kids ~ and both of them had diaper rash only a handful of times each. I used A&D ointment (the generic, not the brand name) from the grocery/drug store, after every change ~ within 24 hours it was almost completely cleared up every time. I thought my mom was nuts when she first recommended it to me, but now if I see even a hint of a rash developing, I put that on, & it's gone usually by the next change. Also, avoid wipes & just use either wet paper towels, or wet baby wash cloths. If you have a BM, you'll obviously want to wash the cloth right away, but it's certainly better than using a wipe b/c most of them contain at least some alcohol, which REALLY burns on open sores. I'll be praying for you both! :)

For all 5 of my children for the last 21 years, I've always used corn starch baby powder. For those who seemed to get a rash easier then I'd use a sprinkle at each diaper change to keep it away. The other I used as needed. My mother used pure corn starch in a shaker bottle with us kids as babies. I never could find a shaker bottle or I would have done that myself cuz it would have been allot cheaper, lol. I tried other creams and ointments but never worked as well as the cornstarch baby powder. Remember, regular powder is made from talc. Talc is made from ground up stones. Who wants that on their baby's bottom? LOL

Maylox, I use it for all type of diper rash for my daughter. It helps take the acid out of the skin that is causing it and helps protet while the skin is healing. You can either dab it on or take a cap full and pure it on over the rash area. And then i sometimes put baby powder over that to help with mostire setting in. Best of luck

My daughter had chronic ear infections and with the antibiotics we fought constant diaper rash. What I would do is after a nice soak in warm water make sure her bottom is dry(air dry for a little bit) and then slather on the desiten. I mean very thick so when you change her all you will do is wipe the top layer of desitin off and then apply some more. In other words her bottom is not exposed and nothing in the diaper touches it. Also letting her run around a little while without a diaper then do what I said above.

My daughter has very sensitive skin and has had frequent rashes. Take her to the pediatrician or call. We have used a new presciption cream called Vusion and Bactroban. Vusion is an anti-fungal while Bactroban I think is an antibiotic. The last rash took a week to cure with the prescription creams. Our doctor also recommended the Triple Paste over the medicine to create a very thick barrier. It worked great! Good luck! I know I almost cried when my daughter was suffering so bad!

It may not be diaper rash. My daughter had a yeast infection (not the kind that you and I are familiar with, so I was really surprised to hear that diagnosis). I also thought it was diaper rash, but like you described, it looked like sunburn. Our pediatrician prescribed a ketococlin cream and it cleared it up within a day or two.
I hope she (and you!) gets relief soon.

R.,
When my son's rash gets really bad like that I use Lansinoh. I had used that when breast feeding and the same idea applies. The lanolin sooths the skin and also provides a barrier against wetness. I typically use Arbonne Baby Care for everyday use because it's so mild, but when it's really bad, the Lansinoh does the trick. Also make sure you are using unscented wipes. One more thing, I took my son to the doctor one time because his rash was so bad that he was bleeding. Come to find out, there was too much acidity in his diet. So I avoided oranges and tomato sauce for a few days.
Hope this helps,
M.

Hi R.,

I am so sorry to hear about your little one's diaper rash. How horrible that must be for you and her. I use the Burts Bees diaper cream and I like it a lot better than desitin. You can use less of it and it clears up rashes right away.

If her rash doesn't seem to be going away you might want to look into her diet and see if there is something that is causing it. I find that when my son eats a lot of oranges, he gets worse diaper rash and I have to make sure that I change him quickly so that his poops don't burn him. I also put diaper cream on every time he has a bowel movement, even if there isn't a rash just to make sure he doesn't get one.

You may want to check with her caregivers to make sure that everyone who watches her is changing her diapers often to help keep her dry. You might also want to let her run around outside without a diaper on to get some air on her bum to help cure it as well. Also, avoid using wipes until the rash goes away - they contain some pretty harsh ingredients that might be aggravating it. - just use a wet cloth until her rash is gone.

Good luck! I hope she is feeling better soon.

The first thing you DON'T want to do is to wipe her with diaper wipes.they have alcohol in them which only makes things worse.I bought a dozen wash clothes used only for bum wiping.if when you go out you can put one in a zip lock baggie.whenever possible let her go diaperless(nothing on bottom)until the rash clears up and last but not least use good old fashion cornstarch.my baby(14 yrs ago)was extremely sensitive after many rounds of severe diaper rash i figured out it was wiping her with the diaper wipes that caused her pain.good luck.
