Hi everyone!

My 8 month old is mostly sleeping through the night (yea!!!) but, a fair amount of the time, he wakes up with his clothes soaked in urine. poor guy!! I'm using Huggies disposable diapers, size 4. He weighs about 18 lbs, so the diapers are one step up already (the box says 22lbs)
What else can I use to keep him dry through the night?
Thanks!

I to have had this promblem with my 11 month old daughter. I found that the HUGGIES OVERNIGHT DIAPERS worked really well and keep her dry all through the night. Also I sometimes add baby powder to help absorb some of the wetness. Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used a product that is a bit difficult to find called "diaper doublers". It is an insert, about the size of a maxi pad that can be used overnight to prevent leaks. I hope they still make this product. Good luck.

I had the same issues while using huggies. I have now gone to Pampers and love them. I have a girl, you might want to try Pampers or Luvs. Luvs fit well on boys. In Australia Huggies has girl or boy diapers. I wish they did that here in the States. Girls and boys pee differentely in their diapers.
hope this helps .

Have you tried different brands? I was never a fan of Huggies cuz my kids felt wet on the outside of their clothes and then I'd go to change the diaper and find it seemed empty-or almost.
I love Pampers. I fing that if you use coupons and stock up when they go on sale, they're really not much more than store brand, but my experience with them is much better.
Good luck.

Hi!

I am a grandmother of three little girls! The youngest one does the same thing that you are requesting help on. I have found that about 3;30 in the am, she needs a bottle. Huggies Overnight and Pampers Deluxe are great diapers. I change her in a new diaper and give her another bottle. I know that means waking up, but I wake up alot so I don't mind checking on her whether she needs a bottle or not. I also dress her so that she does not get cold if she kicks all the covers off of herself. Both of these things seem to help keep her dry. If he still gets wet, you might need to buy some of those blue pads that the hospital used when you were there and place them under him while he sleeps. It may not keep him dry, but it will keep the bedding dry. The other thing we do is give the baby a small bottle, just enough to get her to sleep.

I use cloth diapers now and we have had no problems even when he was still nursing at night. Other than that, you can get either menstrual pads or smaller diapers to use as doublers. When my DD was little and on Lasix (sp.?-it's a diuretic) we were able to find actual diaper doublers, but I haven't seen these lately.
LMK if you are interested in trying cloth and I can give you more info. Even if you just decide to use them at night :)

I used to have that problem with my little guy, My hubby told me to point his wienie down at night to help direct the urine downward so he's not soaked. Is the butt of his diaper wet? It might be that he's pointed upwards and is soaking the 1"-2" between him and the edge of the diaper. Also, we found some great and CHEAP diapers at Sam's. They have the baby muppet characters on them and you can get them by the case! I cannot , for the life of me recall the name (it's been a few years now) but they worked GREAT!
AND we got a case of about 150+ for 22 bucks! who can beat that?!?
Hope that helps your poor guy. It used to break my heart to see those helpless little sweeties all cold n wet.

Use the overnight diapers. I had to do this when my oldest was your son's age. You only use them at night and they are super absorbent! One package lasts a couple of months. Other than that don't gve him anything to drink for a hour or two before bedtime.

My kids would wake up wet too. My little boy drank ALOT. I used Huggies Overnites with my first child and they worked great. They helped with my boy some, he just drank alot so there was not much that was full proof. I used the Overnites for bedtime, naptime, and plane trips.

Pampers did work better for my boy during the day too.

I used cloth diapers when my babies were little and would put an extra folded diaper in the nighttime diaper. This absorbed more of the urine and seemed to help. With the huggies you might try this by adding an extra cloth diaper to absorb the extra urine. Another idea, you could use a larger size diaper over the one that fits him and then the overflow would go into this bigger diaper and not soak into his clothes. Let me know how it works.

Since I found these,,, there have been no more wet beds!!! I have to agree with Amy. Our hospital uses Huggies, and I HATE them!!! We had major leaking problems with my first until we finally started buying Pampers. I tried to use up the Huggies we brought home with my second, but after several leaks I decided it wasn't worth the mess. We rarely have leaks with Pampers... I love them! We also received a bag of Luvs for my second, and made it through that whole bag leak-free so I think they're a pretty good brand as well. I would definately stay away from the Huggies though.

We don't use Huggies, we use pampers but mine was soaking through diapers at night so we started using the Huggies overnights at night, they work great. but make sure they are the right size, if they are too big, there will be leakage. Hi S.,
I had the same problem with all three of my little guys. Try buying a few different brands of diapers. They are all shaped differently and we found that it was the diaper that was not working with the shape of their bottom and waist. My first one ended up with luvs, the second was a huggies baby, and the last one started with luvs and ended with pampers. We found a consignment store if Tyler called "Little Behinds" that had a bin of unused loose diapers and you could buy them buy the bag. This allowed us to compare side to side the same size diaper and test the shapes whithout going broke.
The only other thing you could do is buy the plastic liners that go over the cloth diapers and training pants. These cause alot of sweating and can be very uncomfortable.
I hope this helps.
I am also relieved to hear that someone else has the same problem that I did with diaper leaks. It was a common occurance for us and none of our friends ever had this problem. It happened with all three of my boys and I always thought it was just me.

First, get the right size diapers. If they are too big your baby, urine will not be contained.

Second, I never had any luck with Huggies. My child ALWAYS leaked with Huggies....even with the correct size.

Also, there is nothing wrong with using the off brand diapers. In fact, they work just as well and are cheaper than the name brand. With three kids, we've tried them all and we ended up using the cheaper brand.

Ok, when my son was about your son's age, I put a request out for the exact same thing! So, what everyone has already said is good, but also, they told me that it was just a phase that babies go through. I thought it sounded crazy, but one day it just ended. But to get you until it ends, I would reccommend putting a maxi pad in his diaper before bed time, it really worked for me and they are cheaper than the diaper doublers (they are almost the same thing anyway). I hope this helps, good luck!!

What time does your son go to bed? When does he partake of his last bottle/drink? Making sure your son does not have liquid intake after 7-8:00 (latest) would help and being sure that he urinates before being put to bed. If you want to for sure be sure he is not soaked, you could get up once during the night when if you go to the bathroom and change him/check to see if he has already soaked his diapers. This way he will not be sleeping in wet diapers all night also.

For some reason it seems like at that age (probably because they are drinking a lot of milk) they seeem to urinate more for a brief period.

I have 4 kids and I have used Luvs for all my kids...I haven't had that big a problem with the leaking. Boys can be hard though because their little willy can point up and shoot right out. Sometimes that just makes it hard and you might want check him again right before you go to bed or if you get up in the middle of the night-unless it is just a leaking problem and not a full diaper problem. As he gets older and his liquid intake slows in the evening, it will get better too.

I would try different diapers. I have tried them all and have used Luvs with all four of mine religiously and even my husband will gripe when I buy another brand on discount or something. (my oldest is 13, so I have used them a long time!LOL) They just work for us. My 3rd is 2 and her hiney breaks out if I use another brand.

I like Pampers much better than Huggies...Huggies leaked for us but the Pampers Cruisers were great. There is also another thing you can try. They are called Diaper Doublers and they are like a long maxi pad that you insert into the baby's diaper for extra absorbtion. The only place I found the diaper doublers was at Tom Thumb! They are Safeway brand on the diaper aisle. I had to use them for a while when my daughter was a little older than yours but soaking her diaper at night. They definitely helped.

pampers at night! We use luvs (cheaper) during day and ONLY pampers at night. They seem to work the best for the boys. Huggies seem fine for girls, but not as good for boys. We use the pampers cruisers or the babydry with the elastic band. And we use size 4 during the day and size 5 at night. My twin boys just turned 2 and we switched to pampersat night around 5 months old after lots of leaking from other brands at night. Huggies leaked terribly for us. In my opinion, you shouldnt have to use a "doubler" or 2 diapers.. that is too much trouble and too expensive. Plus, the main purpose of a diaper is to keep the urine in. and if that particular brand isnt doing it, then i say find a different one that does. Hope that helps! First of all go back down a size, he has too much room. I know its seems like the bigger the diaper the better but not true they need a fitter fit so they don't leak. Its been along time but I remember that with each diaper company they'd change designs up so I remember I liked pampers for one child but then they seemed to leak out the sides on another. Then I remember loving luvs but Huggies better latter, because like I said they change designs and each child is built different so buy a small pack of each and see what works best.

Huggies has Overnight diapers that start at size 4.

Or the problem could be that he just needs size 3. If he weighs 18 lbs, the legs or top could be leaking in the size 4. The larger diapers may have extra absorbency, but you may be losing that to leaks because they're too big.

He's in a size 3 in the Cruisers because they go up to 22 lbs. We have had him in Pampers since the day he was born. I tried Huggies, but they always leaked and I couldn't get a good "seal" to keep them from leaking. It is trial and error thing until you find what works. I had the same problem with my girl when she was 6 months old and I discovered that if you buy Walmart's Parent's Choice brand (the cheapest on the shelf in yellow packaging) that the leaking will stop. You will see when you get the diapers that they are thicker and they hold a ton more than other diapers. I put Pampers and Huggies on during the day because they are much more comfortable and only keep PC for night-time. My daughter is now 14 months old and we still continue with this - sometimes I think her diapers weight a few pounds in the morning but no leaks!! :)

Huggies Supreme's hold even more than just regular huggies. I am shocked how much they hold, I think they even do better than the overnight diapers. And being that he is a boy, just make sure his "thing" is pointed down when diapering him at night and not up because then he'll just pee out.

1. I use Luvs - I've never been impressed with Huggies.

2. It's possible that the diapers are TOO big - if the waist and legs aren't snug then as the diaper absorbs urine and swells, it can actually swell out of the plastic boundary and soak the clothes.

Well here goes: I used a regular Huggies diaper (size 4 would be fine), a doubler (you can get them at Tom Thumbs by the diapers, their disposable), and a plastic pant over all of that! They are packed into the PJ's but it works! And in time I didn't need to do it anymore.

Ps And don't forget to point that pee pee down when you are diapering!

I remember when my son was doing the same thing and the only thing that got us through was Huggies Overnights. They are more expensive but did save the hassle during the night and helped him sleep better. I would only use them at night so they would last that long. Never had a problem after that until he was night trained!

The weight on those packages are just averages anyway. My kids were long so they always moved up a size before they reached the weight for that size. I have good luck with the Huggies Overnights- they have double padding so they hold more urine. We have overflows occasionally, but not like with any of the regular diapers.

If that doesn't work- try putting a cloth diaper (prefolded type) inside the regular diaper. Just fold it in thirds and place along the middle of the diaper from front to back- then put diaper on as usual.

Have you tried the Nighttime diapers? We use Pampers diapers throughout the day but I just recently bought the Huggies Nightime diapers for my son. We had at least 2 incidents a week where urine would leak out of his diaper and get onto his pjs and sheets. We've been using these diapers for about a week now and haven't had any issues. My son currently wears size 4 diapers in Pampers so I got him the same size in the Huggies and they seem to work fine.

Good luck!

I highly recommend switching to Pampers Baby Dry. Huggies have been called "soogies" in many circles. I have had great luck with Baby Dry. Plus no diaper rash because they truly absorb everything. Yes, they a bit more expensive than Huggies but worth it. You can also go on Pampers website and join. You will receive coupons and can collect points to use to get toys, books, etc.

S.,
I don't think the brand is the issue.
1. Point him DOWN - this is crucial for boys.
2. Diapers need to fit snuggly unless they are oversaturated in the morning. If the velcro tabs overlap, the diaper is too big.
3. If there's still a problem with "missing" the diaper, try double-diapering, one smaller and one bigger one on top. One extra diaper a day is worth not having to wash all his bedding every morning.

Good luck!

Hi S., I have a 14 month old and went through something similar when she was a bit older than 8 months. I do think putting him in the right size is important because the larger size might be too loose allowing the leaks. The other thing I found was that Huggies Overnites work really well. My daughter has been sleeping 12 hours a night for some time now and a regular pampers diaper (which she wears during the day) would leak over such a long period. The Huggies Overnites work great, but can be hard to find and as far as I know, they are only available in size 4 and up. Good luck!

When my first son was born we had a horrible time with Huggies but it was only before we received some sound advice to "point" his boy parts down before securing the diaper. This is always a must for little boys in diapers and that is why getting a diaper too big can cause trouble- too much room to move around! Hope this wasn't too obvious but it helped me out! Now pretty much any diaper works fine for my boys- Huggies, Pampers, White Cloud... Good luck!

Huggies makes nighttime diapers - your son should probably fit in them. they are big and bulky but do a great job. Also, if it's coming out of the top of the diaper, fold it down a little (like you would to care for an umbillical cord stump). we did that trick on our 6 month old triplet sons at 4mos and that fixed our problem!

Finding the right diaper can be an expensive process but well worth it when you find the right one to stop the leaking. I have twin boys who are two and still in diapers (but hopefully not for too much longer), anyway, they would wake up with really wet pj's and sheets, too and for them Pampers and Luvs were the worst offending diapers. Huggies is what keeps them nice and dry through the night. But obviously your little guy is having issues with the Huggies brand so you'll probably need to try another. I would recommend going back down to a size three for now. I have found wearing too big of diapers can lead to leaking. Infact, I have to buy two different size diapers, size 5 for one twin and size 4 for the other because they are about ten pounds different in their weights but I've found staying with the right size diaper is beneficial in the long run. Good luck finding the right diaper for your little boy.

I love Huggies diapers too, but did have to move to Huggies Overnights to prevent the leaking issue. It may be that you need a different brand as people have suggested, but if Huggies work well during the day, I would think they would also be good during the night. I do use a size larger in the Overnights than he wears during the day. For example, my son is 28 lbs and wears the Regular 4's daytime and 5's in Overnights. I have also found that you have to move them up a size well before the box actually suggests. I do really think the Overnights in a size 4 will solve your problem. For those who have a hard time finding them, I have got them at diapers.com, amazon.com, and my local Tom Thumb.

I have two boys (6 and 20 months) who also urinated a lot at night. I don't necessarily agree with everyone that Pampers work better than Huggies. I have always used Huggies and they work fine. The key is to make sure you are using the right size. It seems like size 4 is a bit too big for an 18lb baby...they need to fit snug. I agree that the Huggies overnights would also help. I also tried Luvs during the day because they are cheaper, but found that they did not work nearly as good as Huggies and Pampers so I just started buying them at Sam's/Costco to save money on diapers. Also, anytime a friend or relative asks you if you need anything, don't hesitate to tell them you need diapers (and specify what brand and what size)! My mother-in-law started buying me a big box about once every couple of months which was greatly appreciated.

I would try a larger size or a different brand. We found that the Huggies would sometimes leak with my son depending on his weight. I also think they outgrow the daiper as they get older not in size, but capacity. We use Pampers Supreme now for both children. The weight on the diapers is such a big range. If you look at the size 5, he is probably in that weight range also. They overlap considerably.

I have twin boys so needless to say I have been through a lot of diaper issues. I tried huggies for a while but my boys would pee right through them even during the day unless I use the size 6. I reccomend the nighttime diapers I believe they are called "good nites". The other choice is changing to another brand like Luvs or Pampers. Luvs are a little less expensive as you get more per box and the sizes run a little bigger, I had no problems what so ever with them soaking through until I hit stage 5's even through the night. We are now going with Pampers as they seem to work the best for use day and night in higher stages, it takes a lot to soak one through.

I have to say as soon as you said "huggies" i assumed this might be part of your problem. I have two children, a boy & a girl. My daughter is 5 & my son is 3 weeks old. Both were initiated to diaperhood with Huggies diapers. Both times we switched to Pampers as soon as possible. I origianlly thought there is no way a diaper that cost so much could be soo leaky. But each time we used Huggies we were left with wet soiled clothing & soggy leaky diapers. I never paid for the huggies, they were given to me or I recieved in the mail as a trial. I am proud to say I have never spent a dime on them as they just a waist of money to me. This may not be the answer to your son's nightime problems but I would definitly try a new brand.
