Did Anyone Pick up Malware This Week? Possibly from Here?

Hi ladies - earlier this week I caught some malware and I think it was when I had only this site open. It was one of those fake "security shield" ones. I knew what it was immediately and managed to close it without even clicking on it but my computer needed to be rebuilt anyway (thankfully I was using my work computer and my IT department is good at fixing these things).

Anyway...did anyone else get hit with anything on Monday?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. My IT department said that this kind of attack is very common at the beginning of each year (mine was the Windows Virus Scan 2012 or something like that that others also mentioned). I've been a little gun shy about coming back on this site but hopefully it was just a one-time freak thing for me. Happy surfing everyone!

I don't click on ANY of the advertisements on this site. I've (knock on wood) never had a problem with viruses from this site.

GOOD LUCK!!

There is a new virus/worm going around and people are getting it through Facebook. It was announced on the national news about a week ago. It's one of those bad Trojans that culls all of your private financial information once it's unleashed.

See:

There is another nasty one out there that has been floating around for some time now as well. It's called Win 7 security 2012, and it claims to be a security program that has found a virus on your computer. Do NOT click on it or you will unleash a virus and lose everything on your computer. If you get this one, take it to get serviced. You can try to get it off on your own if you haven't opened it already, using programs online, but its really hard to do, and you stand to lose everything, so bring it in.

I had this before Christmas and had to take my computer to Geek Squad at Best Buy. The do-it-yourself links didn't work for me and didn't want to risk losing everything or worse any important information getting culled.

YES, two days before Christmas on THIS site. Had to take my laptop and have it 'cleaned'. And yes, I have protection on the laptop, but it still got inside.
And BTW, it ISN'T from clicking anything on this website. The virus gets your I.P address by being on this site. It could happen anywhere, it's not mamapedia.

Yes, we got the Win 7 security 2012. Kaspersky got rid of it (we hope). I think it was last week.

its really bad. we got one. not sure where it came from. but it shut down all of our security stuff so we couldn't even run a scan. had to take my computer in to have it wiped out and the basic discs reinstalled. pain in the butt.

Yes, Monday, i did get it as well. I had fb open and clicked on a link from a freinds post to an article in some newspaper don't remember if it was well known or not, FB always takes me to the screen where i can decide if i want to continue and go to the link knowing it might allow someone else to see all my FB stuff and I didn't click through and i never click on the ads here, and yet i still got a nasty one. IT was the Home security 2012 etc. think it's gone but still scared.

I had something really bad a week ago. A thing popped up telling me that I had a trojan, a worm, a virus, blah blah blah. It wouldn't let me close out of it and ironically, the only option the "pop up" gave me was to purchase either a $60 or $80 version of some software to clean my computer.
It wouldn't let me do anything and was so relentless I had trouble even doing a system restore at first.
However, I was able to successfully get rid of it.

Our computers at work have all kinds of security in place and even still, the bookkeeper got a pop up saying it was time to run an update so she did and her computer was in the shop for 3 days.
These things often look very "official" and will tempt you to believe you should open them or run the updates. If it's not something you know for sure your system is compatible with, DON'T DO IT.

No one at my office uses the computers for personal use and it still happened there.
I only look at mamapedia from home. I don't know if there is any connection, but I had a pain in the rump to deal with until I fixed it.

Yes!! At work too and it worried me. My brother in law found a fake registration code so I was able to get back online and fix it. Good to know where it came from, because I had several programs open at the time and figured it was Facebook! Mine was win7 virus scan or something too.

No, I never got a virus from mamapedia. We have really intense anti-virus programs. Maybe, it just catches it? I've never had a problem.

Well, I guess I will not be leaving the Mamapedia window open anymore!!!!

No issues, but my hubby would laugh at me for years if it happened.

Yes I've been through it a few times and wondered if there was any connection to this site. Mine started before Christmas though.

And for all of those who have not experienced it it is NOT due to clicking on ads, opening questionable e-mails, answering a survey, letting your kids play on your computer, Facebook (cause I don't have an account!) etc.

I DO use security software with spyware and popup blockers. My antivirus software is updated daily so I am not sure how it gets through.

I have had to restore my computer a few times now. I highly recommend EVERYONE gets an external hard drive and backup all of your files. If your computer is rendered useless at least you have your files and do not have to pay dearly to have them retrieved. Save, save, save!!

Now I am not sure if there is any relation, but after I restored my computer the last time I downloaded the Windows Service Pack 1 and Internet Explorer 9 upgrades. I also put through A LOT of optional microsoft downloads that were security updates. Since then I have a had a lot less issues...okay I hesitate to say none because it will come back to bite me in the @$$.
