We're thinking of taking our 4-year old daughter to see the new Disney movie UP in 3D this coming weekend ... it'll be her first time at a theater!! Have any of you mama's seen this movie and what are your thoughts on our taking our 4-year old to see it? I just watched a trailer for it and am not sure if it might scare her or am I just being a little paranoid?? Thanks for your comments!!

This is just my personal preference, but I wouldn't waste the 3-D cost and hassle on a 4-year-old. They don't even need to know there is a 3-D option really. When my kids were little the glasses were a hassle (I hate 3-D movies myself -- it bothers my eyes) and the cost was extra. So if I were you I'd just consider doing the regular showing.

I took my 4 1/2 year old son a few weeks ago. There were a couple parts where he was a little scared (I don't remember exactly what they were). But there has been no comment about the fear since leaving the theater...just about how much he liked it and when we can go see another movie!

My girls are 4 and I took them. They did all right through it, but there were some pretty intense moments for them. I think the loudness and the music intensify the scary moments. I have a friend with very sensitive children who are easily scared and I recommended her NOT to take them. It really depends on the child. As a grownup, I loved the movie!

I think it depends on the child. My sister took her 4 year old son to see UP and she had to explain death to him for a week and he was a little freaked out about dying after the movie. My husband and I saw it and left our son at home with a babysitter. Our son is 3 and it would not have been appropriate for him.

Also, I agree with other posters that the dog scene might scare your daughter, even I jumped and got a little scared.

I took my four year old ( boy ) to see it! There are some sad moments in the movie, and my sweet boy would look at me and say oh, M., this is sooo sad....and we had great opportunities to talk about it later! The movie had a great message, and I think four is a good age. Re: the storms, they didn't register w/ me or my son as scary, but the way I view it is that storms occur all the time, and if your child is scared of storms, you really need to talk to them about them, the more educated they become, the better for them and you! My son went through a "scared" of thunder phase, and we watched the weather channel and borrowed age appropriate books at the library for him to learn about it!! I personally think protecting our children from the everyday things of life ( like death and storms ) make them more and more afraid, and more and more naive!!! Be sensitive, but BE THERE for them!!!

Another opinion, don't waste the extra $$$ on the 3D for a 4 year old! They won't miss it! My 10 year old saw the 3D w/ his gramma, and loved it, but I don't think my 4 year old minded either way! The only movie he loved in 3D was Journey to the Center of the Earth.....

If your still unsure about bringing your daughter, wait til it goes to the cheap show, that way you won't mind so much if you have to leave!

Good Luck!!

Spoiler alert! I am going to share some stuff about the movie so if you want a surprise skip my review....

My 4 and 2 1/2 yr old went with us to the drive-in to see it. There is some heavy stuff in the beginning that may bring up quesitons or go right over a little one's head. I talked my son through some things. Just life stuff really about getting older or things that sometimes happen in people's lives. There is a gun and shooting (don't know why Disney does that), funny fight scene (adult funny, but still a fight) and the "bad guy" falls out of the sky...another way Disney ends it's battles..causing my kids to ask if he was "DEAD!!!" Don't know how much you have covered with your little one.
Overall, I really liked it! It was origianl, funny, and something I would let my kids see again having talked about the things in the movie and knowing they will ask the questions over and over.
I find if you are there with them and talk (whisper) things to them that can counter any negative messages, that is what they take away. My son will say that "hitting hurts" when he sees it in a show or "that's not nice" when someone is being mean to another character, so it feels good to know that he is hearing my messages.
My kids love the drive-in, but I have never taken them to a theater. I would not be afraid to leave if your child isn't into it.

Hello,

I just took my son (5 yrs. old) to see this past Sunday. It was a good movie. It did have its sad parts but its not bad. The "scary" parts were not as scary, it was a very funny movie and of course it has a happy ending.
Good Luck!

Do not do it. My husband and I previewed it and the movie should be rated PG13. yes they will get scared and it is an adult movie in a cartoon. Lots going on around our town about this movie!

this movie is better then the trailer lets on, and a 4 yr old will LOVE it and be glued to their seat. There were kids in the theatre that age when we went and they loved it from the comments they were making. I must say there is not ONE part of the movie that would be bad for any age. Best film for kids in a while!!

((just read the responses, the death was handled in a great way, made me love my husband that much more, not fear death. The storm scenes weren't even scary. Not sure what could have been bad to the others...))

The movie is actually pretty sad. My 4 year old daughter was crying and asked that we leave cause she didn't want to know how it ends. From the commercials it doesn't look sad it looks cute. She didn't like the 3D at all. She has been to the movies before so it's not like this was her first time there. We're going to try Ice Age since she liked the other 2.
Good luck!

I think it is visually stimulating for a 4 year-old and I don't remember any scary parts. It has a very sweet story line and as a mom, prepare to bring some tissues. I took my 6 and 9 year-olds to it and they loved it.

We just took our 4-yr-old son to see it. It was his 3rd movie theater experience (the first 2 were The Bee Movie and Bedtime Stories). He LOVED the movie "UP!" The theater we went to didn't have it in 3D. He didn't get scared at ANY of it and even laughed through most of the movie. Of course he didn't understand the whole plot of this man destined to live where his wife dreamed of living, and stopping at nothing to get there. But he really loved the animation and humor...even the "scary" dogs.

That said...we went with my cousin who also has a 4-yr-old son (6 months younger than mine) who is very sensitive. He was scared ONLY during the scary dog part, so she took him out of the theater and came back with him when that part was over. He did fine through ALL the rest.

UP was amazing. I took my 3.5 year old too for a special treat (not 3D version). Unlike other Disney movies, this one wasn't as scary (i.e. Lion King where dad is killed!). There are some sad scenes but they went over my daughter's head as it wasn't obvious or violent (but sad for me!). It was very cute and also great for the adults. Loved it! Word of advice - go 15-20 minutes late to miss the very long previews of upcoming movies.

Leave your daughter with a babysitter and go see the movie with your hubby. We did that, and it was nice to have a date, and the movie was beautifully done --it's more for grown-ups than kids.

We took my 10 year old Grandson to see UP. I thought there were a few "dark" moments, with the attack dogs. I would not recommend this to a four year old. I also don't think a four year old could follow the story line.
Good Luck to you.

My husband and I took our son for his 5th birthday and he loved it. He has been to the theater regularly since he was 3 so it is not a new experience for him. He does take the 3D glasses off a lot, so that might be a challenge. As far as the movie being appropriate goes, it does have some really sad moments that are addressed in a way that a 4 year old hopefully won't pick up on too much. My son kind of "got it" but wasn't upset. He thought the dogs were funny and not scary, so it's hard to say if it's too mature for a 4 year old.

My family and I loved the movie, however, there really are a few "dark, scary, scenes". As much as I enjoyed it, I probably would take a more mature 6 year old and older, to see it - no one younger.

There are also many scenes that will need an explanation to a young child. As beautiful as the balloon scenes are and as nice as the movie ends (With it being DISNEY - it has to have a happy ending!!!!) it still has some very sad moments. No, I was not the only one in the theater drying my tears!

From a young child's perspective, there are three movies that scared my children when they were young: I'd put it as scary as the tornado scene (on big screen!) in the "Wizard of Oz"; Malificent, the mean Queen, in "Sleeping Beauty" and Ursula - in the "Little Mermaid". if your daughter can handle those - she'll be okay.

With regard to the 3-D, I, personally, wouldn't take her to that - it would be way to realistic or she just won't wear the glasses. The regular one (is that 2-D?) was impressive.

Good luck.

I will not take my daughter to see it after reading some reviews and having a friend of the family take her 4 year old to see it. My daughter is 4 1/2 and would probably be ok with it. I guess it deals with death a lot (from what I have been told) and there are some scary parts with dogs. I will just wait for it to come out on dvd and we can watch it together in a year or two. I even explained to her why we are not going to see it and she was ok with that.

We took our kids (3 1/2 and 2) to see it when it first came out. Whie it is somewhat adult oriented, my kids both loved it. They loved the colors and the balloons and such. They may not have understood the whole movie, but they liked it. We did not see the 3-D version of this movie. We took our kids to see monsters vs aliens in 3-D and my youngest wouldn't keep the glasses on and my oldest got tired of wearing the glasses, so we opted to go with the regular version of this movie. All in all I think it depends on your child. My kids like "scary" movies (ie: monster house and the Jim Carrey version of the Grinch)

We took our 3 year old daughter this past weekend. It was her 1st time at the theater too. She sat throught it very well. She was pretty afraid of the mean dogs in the movie though. She had to sit in my lap and covered her eyes a few times. But she wasn't traumatized or anything - still sleeps through the night, etc :) I just wish there was maybe a little something happier to take her to. This one had several really sad scenes. All in all, I think you'd be safe taking your daughter. Good luck!

I always check on commonsensemedia.com (or it may be .org) before I take my kids to a movie. They will tell you exactly what the movie is about and exactly what types of sex, violence, language, and product endorsements are in the movie. There are parent and kid reviews of movies as well.

My neighbor took her 5yo son and he was scared as well.

I feel like I'm in the minority amongst our friends w/4 year olds, but after much thought and research (there was even a child-focused media review web site I consulted, whose name is escaping me right now), and we're opting NOT to take our son (despite his interest...ah, marketing!). The media review site said most appropriate for ages 6+. Its not totally a "feel good" movie and Pixar's intention was not to really have it be for toddlers/preschoolers...they just happen to use animation as their medium, but just because its animated does not mean its for kids!) - the themes are geared for a much older audience. EVERY parent I have talked to said their 4 year old was scared. I really think mine would be, even though I know he's otherwise ready for the "movie-in-a-theater" experience. My son is also afraid of dogs, and a trusted friend with a dog advised that due to some REALLY mean dogs featured, it would not be a good idea (in fact, that was the scene that scared their son so much they had to take him out of the theater...and they have a dog. Her son just believes that dogs should NOT behave that way and he was so freaked to think of them as so violent).
So we're going to wait until something arrives in the theater that's more appropriate for his age. Also, one friend of mine who took her girls said she wants to go back by herself - she couldn't appreciate all of the amazingness of the animation, story etc. while trying to help her kids get through the movie....

It all depends on the child as to whether they will be scared or not. My 4 your old daughter saw the movie and loved it. She doesn't get scared watching movies like my nephews do. I tried to explain that the dogs were a little scary and she cut me off and said "Mom, it was just a movie, they weren't real" Some kids just have a better grasp on how to determine real vs make believe. You just need to look at your child and make the determination.

We took our 4.5 year old and 2.5 year old (not the 3D). The 4.5 liked it and the 2.5 year old wanted to go home about 3/4 of the way thru.

I don't know if a 4 year old would keep the glasses on the whole time and if she doesn't, the movie may be a bit blurry for her. Why not take her to see it without the 3D?

Even though I liked the movie, it scared my 3- and 6-year-old a little.

There are two things I'd warn you about: the "bad guys" are these dogs that can be kinda scary. They have funny voices but there are a lot of close-ups where they growl loudly, show pointy teeth and chase everyone.
Second, there's a scene in which the old man's wife dies. They don't show her dying, they just show him sitting at a church acting sad. I had to explain to my kids what happened. It didn't freak them out, but I know this is a tough or scary concept for some kids.
Hope this helps!
