I saw a really cute idea the other day - they had taken photos of the family and others of just the children and made a calendar for the mom/grandma it was darling they put little notes on it like birthdays and family events and then also things like I love it when mom bakes... with a photo of the child eating cake or whatever -- you could do photos to fit each month or just general -- anyway cute and fun and easy

I am craft-challenged, but I went to JoAnne's and found some cute stuff for my girls to make, a sun catcher they can paint ($1) and heart necklaces $5 for 28, so we'll make them as end of the year thank you gifts for teachers as well.
They also have tons of cheap crafty ideas.

Hi,
We just made our Mother's day gifts. We made a decorated vase.
It is spring and we have flowers on the property to put in it.
We got an empty glass jar as the base. Then did a trip to the craft store. got a glue gun-low heat setting, 1 roll of ribbon, 1 bag of shells and 1 of glass pieces.

Since we did 6 jars...we had a bit of variety with the ribbon.

We glued 1 or 2 strips of ribbon around the jar. Then placed the shells and glass in the bottom of the jar. We added some shell pieces to the outside of the glass as well.

It was a tad crazy with 3 of them doing the project but fun.
Cheers!

A few projects my kids and I have done for all the grandmas are:
1. Used artist canvas panels (not very expensive), painted the background, then used a darker paint to add their hand or foot prints, then put their name date, maybe a picture, then I found some stickers that had words like love, precious, with the definition.
2. Once I made a collage of pictures.
3. We made concrete stepping stones with hand and foot prints, then the kids added gems. You can get the kits at most craft stores.

For Christmas last year, my brother made a DVD slide show for our parents. Each of the siblings sent him pictures and he loaded them into his computer, added a song for some "background music" and burned the whole thing on his computer. I think the DVD/CD cost him about $3, and of course, it made our mother cry to see the pictures of us as kids and when our children were smaller.

I made a scrapbook that I put together of pictures I printed of my son. One year I did 3 books, and printed a few pictures from Sams Club or Costco (pretty cheap). They absolutely love them because they can show them off. It is a real fun thing to do. If you have a program on you computer you could even print it that way. I have also done a calendar with my sons pictures. Good luck.

If they are local to you - why not put together a beautiful brunch or lunch with a nicely decorated table- make a special card for each of them expressing how much you appreciate them. You could even get some small potted plants for the table so they each have one to take home and place in their kitchen. You can do these yourself - just get a clay pot- if you want to jazz them up- tie a ribbon around them or just sponge paint them with acrylic paint. Then plant inside a pansy plant or whatever suits your fancy.

I bet they will remember this day for years to come...

I like to make collage frames with photos. I pick up a 2 to 4 opening frame at walmart for between $3 and $5. I use my digital camera to capture a really cute picture of my kids or our family together (maybe pictures of her with the grandkids) and take them to the one hour photo, it costs less than $1 to get a few pictures done. Put them together, maybe add a sticker with a family saying or some dried, flattened flowers to the lower corner and your done. Each gift is $6 or under. You can also go online and find a grandma poem, type it up on your computer, have your kids do a paint handprint on the top and then put it in a frame with a mat. Sometimes it the frames comes with an all white cheap mat, I'll paint it.

Hi T.-
I do alot of stamping- so I make coasters using my stamps..
You can get unglazed ceramic tiles at Home Depot for 89 cents each.. then you use craft ink or staz-on to stamp an image on the tile. put in a 350 degree oven for 20 minute(this sets the ink) let cool and use a spray sealer to seal them.. Wrap them in a ribbon and you are set.. If you have water color pencils you can also use them to add some color to your image.
Or get rub-on stickers and some glass votive or jars at say the 1.00 store and transfer your designs onto them!! those make great gifts also...

Hope this helps you!!!

Homemade jam is something that you can make inexpensively, most people like, and is not likely to end up at DI.

Strawberries are fairly inexpensive now and jam jars are not that expensive. You will also need some sugar, a lemon, and a box of pectin for each batch you make. You can divide 1 to 2 batches among your three mothers, too, and give them each a nice remembrance.

If you need more detailed instructions, I would be glad to give them to you.

Hi T.,

Several years ago now, my daughter and I did not have a whole lot of money at Christmas time, and having many people on our list, we got busy crafting! Turn an old (or blank) CD/DVD disk into a candle holder...I used a glue gun to stick a long tapered candle over the hole of the disk, then depending on your likes, or in this case one of the mom's likes...decorate with artificial flowers, greenery, or use your imagination on what to place around the candle at the bottom. Another thing we did is turned a plastic cassette tape holder into a business card holder (just invert the lid, paint and decorate as desired). Though money isn't as tight these days, I am making my mom her present this year. I am making her some of those reusable grocery store bags. (No need for a pattern, just copy a tote bag) If you sew, your options are endless...aprons, pot holders, small appliance covers, placemats to name a few besides clothes. How about a message board? I used sturdy cardboard cut to the size I wanted, purchased some cork board (not real pricey) about 1/2'' thick, glued the cork board to the cardboard, then covered the whole thing with material. Using ribbon I criss crossed it across the board and held it in place with thumbtacks. Pictures can be easily slid under the ribbon without putting holes in them...then add some extra tacks for tacking up receipts or whatnot. Go to Hobby Lobby, get an unpainted box (either wood or cardboard...neither are expensive at all) and paint/decorate as desired. (You can also get jewelry boxes to paint yourself from Hobby Lobby, I get the small bottles of paints...roughly 50cents per bottle) Buy some candles (the thick round ones at least 3'' tall), some beads and/or sequins, small straight pins and decorate the candle with them (using the straight pins to attach sequins/beads etc..even ribbon). Hope this helps and if you'd like more ideas, please feel free to E~Mail me at ____@____.com

Happy crafting!

I am a grandmother of 3 beautiful girls and knowing that mothers day is just around the corner I would much rather have a homemade gift made with pictures of my grandbabies than anything else. You could get a picture frame that has divided mat in it and put special pictures of your daughter in it that they have not seen. You could even take your daughter to the park and take pictures and then put those pictures in the frame. Trust me they will cherish it forever!

I've got two gifts that I use all the time:

Vitamin E Face Scrub:
Mix together 1 C. salt, 15 drops Vitamin E oil, 2tsp. olive oil, and 1/4 bar glycerin soap (use a cheese grater to to grate it). Put it all in a pretty container!

Lemon Tea Sugar Scrub:
You'll need:
1 C. sugar
3Tb Epsom salt
10tsp. olive oil
2tsp. honey
3 green tea bags
1 lemon to zest
grater or zester
pretty container

Grate your lemon rind and set aside the zest. Combine and mix the sugar, epsom salt, and loose tea (just rip open the bags and sprinkle the leaves in). Add in the olive oil and mix. Add the honey and combine well. Add the lemon zest and mix. Fill up the container and make a label and give it away!!

Hope this helps, it sounds like alot, but it's really easy and the most expensive part is the container. I found vitamin E oil in my grocery store with the vitamins...

I know it's been done, but hand prints are a fav of mine. You can do them in inexpensive plaster or clay. You could even do a paint on paper version. You could do your next to your little girl's or even hers inside of yours. Painted or glazed nicely with your names and the date is cool or in a frame with a sentimental poem or saying. The possibilities are endless and the product is truly you and your little one.

I have a 2 year old and a four year old. We painted cloth tote bags for the mothers (grandmothers) in our family. They aren't very expensive at a craft store (Hobby Lobby is where I found mine) and the children's handprints with names and date are easy to do. I found one bag with sleeves for pictures as well. Fabric paints or acrylic stay permenant after ironing. You could even 'recycle' a cloth bag by painting a piece of cloth then appliqueing it over any logo or previous design. Good luck!

I dont know if this has been mentioned or not, but one thing I did was get an 11x14 frame with a mat that has an 8x10 hole and then I cut family photos to the shape of the mat and used rubber cement to glue them down. You can put the Proclamation on the Family in the frame or print a nice phrase on your computer to put in it. It is relativly simple and inexpensive depending on the frame you choose, and my mother in law (who doesnt like anything I do) actually liked it. And with the family photos, it is unlikely that it will end up at the DI.

As a mom and a grandmother, I treasure time with my children and grandchild. The best gift is the gift of yourself -- here are a couple of ideas...

Write letters to each of your moms telling them why they mean so much to you.

Give each mom a "gift certificate" for time with you. You can have an exclusive lunch or afternoon tea or morning coffee with each one and tell her in person why she is so special.

I hope this is helpful -- and Happy Mother's Day!

Anything made out of a picture is usually good and loved. Just a framed pic, or you can make a calendar with pics for each month of the year at the pic makers in stores, or I saw a snow globe you could put a picture in the globe was two something I think (think I saw it in the picture department at a wal-mart. I don't know what kinda software or printer you have but I have a thing where I can make a calendar on one page with a picture, (if you want to check that out but don't have the software let me know I will email you samples and then if you want make one and email it to you for you to print) You could just make homemade cards for them with your daughter - there are lots of ways to make those fun, trace your daughters hand inside yours and decorate. You can make a design on a flower pot and put in some pretty flowers. You could write them a poem. I make pot holders for people sometimes - just find some pretty but durable material then sew it around something thick (old sweats or the padding sold in craft sections). You could just stroll through a hobby lobby or a craft section of any store that's always good for ideas. You can make bird feeders with just a couple pieces of wood (a flat bottom with a slanted roof over the top an eye screw at the top with rope threw to hang then you can decorate the out side with whatever you dream up. You can usually get stuff to make ear rings pretty cheap and easy to do. If they are close enough you could just bake them a nice cake... Okay Ive rambled on long enough lol. Good Luck! :)

I see you have a 19 month old. I find photos are the perfect gift for moms once we're adults. Honestly, I know few people in their 50s/60s/whatever who really need more "stuff" of any kind but photos just keep on giving. If you want to get really creative, you can but inexpensive wood frames and cover them-- have your daughter "help".

I also like to make a donation to an organization in my mom's name. It doesn't have to be large-- she'll never know the amount.

Or just write each of them a letter telling them wonderful memories you have, how you can now relate to what they may have gone through as a mom, etc. Things like that mean so much to our mothers and can never be bought.

Enjoy!

I'm in the same position. I wanted to show my mothers that how much they mean to me, but don't have much money to spend. I decided to make calanders with pictures of my son. I'm not much of a scrapbooker so I did my on the computer. It's been pretty time consuming but enjoyable. I'm making one and printing it twice. All I'm paying for is printing it (about $20 a paper) and binding it. My mom in past years has just asked for a day of our time to spend with her, we did crafts, talked, and I helped clean the house. what about making a coupon book for things from you and your daughter. You could make coupons for things like 10 mins on the phone with your daughter, a big hug, do a load of laundry, one dinner at your house, an afternoon shopping, etc. I don't know how close your moms live, but if they live farther away and can't do coupons, you could write your own story using your daughter's pictures as illustrations. That way it's like a photo album, too. Make sure it's in your own handwriting....more personal. Then it's just the cost of construction paper, Markers, and whatever prints you use of your daughter.

If you are into crafty stuff at all, it might be nice to personalize gifts in the form of pictures.
www.scrapbookmemoriestv.com has some great ideas.

Episode 908 has a thing where they took an empty Altoids container and decorated the outside to look like a vintage siutcase using papers and embellishments. On the inside were an assortment of pictures. You could mount your fave pics of you and your mom/s on various pretty papers or even write a special poem or letter telling them how special they are to you.

You could arrange a "special time" with each if possible. Invite one over for coffee or tea or a favorite old-movie day. You could pack up a picnic and go to a fave park. Or even a video tape compiled with a bunch of clips from when you were growing up.

Anything you do with pictures is always personal, it won't go to trash and they will know that you took extra time to think of them.

Have fun. Be a kid again. :)

If you can crochet, pot holders are always nice. Or, embroider some kitchen towels. A family photo is always welcome. Put a snap shot in a cute frame. You could decorate the frame with ribbon or buttons, or what have you. Try the Dollar store for frames and dish towels. If you don't embroider or cross stitch, you could use fabric pens and draw your design. Fabric pens cost $1 each, so you wouldn't want to use too many colors. I'm sure you will get lots of ideas from the group. Have fun!

Hi T.,

I had lost my job at the end of last year, so I needed inexpensive gift ideas for the holidays. This past Christmas I made soap and lip balm to give as gifts and also made a photo flip book for my Mom of my daughter. Hobby Lobby has the supplies for the soap, if you decide to go that route. Maybe if they each have a favorite scent you could further personalize them. The supplies weren't all that expensive and the process was just basically putting the soap pieces in a glass bowl and melting it in the microwave so I could add the color and scent. If you want the lip balm recipe to try you can email me at ____@____.com - I am pretty sure I stuck it in my cookbook so I wouldn't lose it because it was so easy to make! Best of luck!

bookmarks or magnets - use balsa wood shapes from hobby lobby. kids paint/decorate them. When they're done, adult seals w/hodge podge or leftover polyurethane, etc from home projects.
handprints on anything....hobby lobby sells totes, aprons, etc. use fabric paint.
kids paint or fingerpaint scrapbook paper that's posterboard weight (we found a whole book of different colors for $10-12 at wal-mart last year for a different project). adult cuts into a mat for a photo and adds a photo of kids.
we painted flower pots one year.
we've used clay to make handprint ornaments and photo holders.
colored tissue paper and hodge podge (decoupage) onto clear glass containers (vase, junk box, etc) - the kids did those at ages 3 and 5 and they turned out really pretty - probably be gorgeous if an adult did them.
In the end...a heartfelt note from you would probably mean the most.

Maybe you could take a photograph that's special and put it in a frame from Michaels, or a craft store, that is just plain unpainted wood and paint it or decorate with sequins, buttons, beads.

Or burn them CDs with meaningful songs.

Hi, T. S.!

Go to www.irisfolding.circleofcrafters.com and download FREE patterns to make iris folded cards. The resulting cards can be as personal and as beautiful as your imagination and the papers you use. You will need to locate/cut pieces of paper about 6" long and 1 1/2" wide. I live on top of a mountain an hour's drive (one way) from a store where I can purchase a gift or card. Of necessity, have had to "make a little something from nothing at all". These cards are called "iris folded" because the end result resembles the iris of a camera as it folds in to take a picture. The center of the "iris" can be something shiny to draw your eyes there, or it can be a photograph or some other object. The end result can be exceptionally beautiful. I'm making an iris-folded anniversary card now for my nephew and his wife: It is comprised of a piece of off-white, satin textured wall paper, a black and white print paper, shiny white wrapping paper, and a flat, black paper. These folded and "woven" strips of paper will form an oval framing their wedding picture. I purchased a double black mat and sleek black and chrome frame yesterday at Wal-mart. The end result should be sophisticated enough to sit on my nephew's desk in his law office. Iris-folded cards may be framed like this one, slid into a card frame, or sent "as is" simply as a card. The pieces of paper used to make the cards can come from anything! I've used pieces of newspaper, magazine paper, wrapping paper, paper bags, foil, the foil wrapper that comes around a florist's potted plant, the colored front of our church bulletins, old envelopes, seasonal/holiday cards people have given me, origami papers, even the foil wrappers from candy! Warning: IRIS FOLDING CAN BECOME ADDICTIVE AND IT IS TIME CONSUMING, but the end results challenge you, satisfying your need to be creative, and reward the recipient of the card with a personal, one-of-a-kind gift. They will know beyond the shaddow of a doubt that you put much time and thought into the making of their card.

Remember that investing yourself into the making of a gift like this is as important as is the finished product. Enjoy!

I am not sure how much you want to spend, but my daughter and I made a stepping stone for my mom. We bought a kit at Hobby lobby and made it. Next time I will just get the concrete and pour into a mold you can get that is cheap. You could go this route. We pressed her hands in the middle and wrote "Ashley's Nana" in stained glass pieces. You can find right next to the molds. You can also decorate them with glass beads which are like $1.00 a bag for a varitety of colors. Also you could get foam stickers (also found at hobby lobby) and create picture frames or cards for mothers day. We also are doing this. There are a ton of choices with this so maybe your kids can pick out some. The backs are sticky and they are really inexpensive. Just a couple ideas! This is what we are doing this year. We are in the same boat as far as not having a big budget for mother's day this year. So I decopage (sp?) a picture frame and it was a lot of fun. I used two old frames (I used wooden ones, I'm not sure if you could use other kind) that I had laying around. It's a great way to use those frames that you don't have anything for or you could just as easily go to a garage sale and pick up frames for .50 cents. Then go to your local craft store (I went to Hobby Lobby) and you can pick out whatever kind of paper you want to cover the frames with. I used to different kinds on each frame I made so I spent $1 (they are usually .50 cents) on both frames. Then you will need to buy Mog Pog. I fortunately used my sisters so I didn't have to buy any. But I saw it at Hobby Lobby for $5 something for a big one. If you want to find a cheaper one they might have a smaller one for less money. And basically you cut the paper to fit the frame (you really can't mess this up!) and the use the Mog Pog to clue the paper down. It glues fairly quickly but you do have enough time to align where you want the paper. Once the whole frame is covered you will do another coat of Mog Pog on top. It kind of seals it. I spent almost nothing on this and then I am putting a picture of my girls on the inside for the grandmas. You can easily just take the pictures yourself and have them developed at Walmart for cents. I hope I explained that well. Even if you don't do this now I'd suggest doing it with your old frames for yourself. It's super cute! Let me know if you have questions about the process. Good luck!

My mothers are always keen on pictures of their children. You could get them framed or my sisters and I usually turn one picture into a Mother's Day card and insert the other pictures. This is great because they then have up to date pics of their kids and grandkids, which they absolutely love.

Me and my husband are in school full-time and have two kids, my husband holds down a full-time job. Needless to say we don't have much money. Every year for mother's day I get picture frames from the dollar store or DI (you can find some pretty cute stuff sometimes) and I get our favorite pictures printed of the kids or our family. It has been a big hit with both my mom and mother-in-law. You'll probably spend $5.00 per mom.

I bought my parents a page frame for Christmas and then every holiday I take my favorite pictures of the kids and make a page to put in the frame. They change it out every time I give them a new one and put the old page in an album. That way they have lots of pictures of thier grandkids without my Mom having to scrapbook. If they don't live close to each other you could even get away with making one digital page and just printing it 3 times:)If you would like to see examples and more gift ideas to make for pretty cheap, check out the Idea Gallery on my website www.mycmsite.com/tonyawildwoman. That's where I got the page frame for Christmas too. I love the StoryBook Creator software they have to make digital pages! You can download a free version right from the website to make albums. I bought the plus version so that I have the freedom to change things around and print a page at a time...

Make a card or letter on pretty paper and TELL each one of them how you feel about them. If they live in the same area as you, make a large dinner and take each of them a portion of the dinner. If you can, put aside some time to spend time with them. Think about what YOU would like for mothers day and pass it on to them. Clean their houses for them. Do yard work for them. Since you're crafty, make something that comes from the heart. Remember, it's not the money that is spent, it is the thought that counts. Happy Mothers Day to you!

Hi T.!

I'm in the same boat with you on the homemade gifts. Here is an idea for a $5 gift that will take care of all three. This week at King Soopers their annuals in the small containers are 4 for $5... not too bad a deal and I found this fun photo craft at this website. It's called bouquet of flowers. Here is the site... http://crafts.kaboose.com/bouquet-of-photo-flowers.html What I am going to do is make the bouquet of flowers of my kids and put them in the annuals that I buy for each grandmother and then make a handle out of some construction paper so it's also it's own gift bag too. Don't limit yourself to one picture either... have a lot of fun with it! There are also other ideas for gifts on this site too.

Best of Luck,
A. Lucero

You could make some up some meals and freeze them for your mom. Put them in small size bags or for two or more if needed. That way when she doesn't want to cook she can shop from the freezer. Also, one thing I used to do when I was low on cash was to give some homemade coupons for things that the person does not like or has difficulty doing. Such as: vacumm the house, change sheets on beds, dust the places that they can't get to, plant flowers, you can come up with your own. The people that I gave them to loved them and was eager to use them. I gave my time and energy and they were very appreciative.

Hi T., Last year we did flower pots with geraniums for Grandma. We bought the terra cotta pots at Walmart, and then painted it with acrylic paint in grandma’s favorite color. After the paint dried we wrote "My Grandma is...." on one side, then CJ listed all the things her Grandma is to her, for example: loving, kind, giving, etc... I took her list and wrote the different words all over the pot, then at the top wrote "Happy Mother's Day 2007 - Love CJ". Spray the whole thing with polyurethane to seal. Let it dry over night, then add the flowers. The great thing about the geraniums is they can be put outside over the summer and brought in and put in a window during the fall/winter. The flowers given to Mom last year were cuttings from a plant that I've had for at least 3 years. The whole gift cost around $5 to make (add extra for the plant).

Maybe you could give them a morning of pampering. You could get them all together and cook them a nice breakfast and the have facials or pedicures. They are not to hard to do yourself and it will make them feel great. Good luck. I know how hard it is to figure out what to get or do for some people but do you best and remember it doesn't matter what you do as long as you do something.

You can put together a cookie jar. You take an empty canning jar(you could even use a used spagatti jar, fruit jar or what ever you have on hand). Then you take a cookie recipe and layer all the dry ingredients in the jar; flour, sugar, raisine, ect. You can see each layer in the jar. You can decorate the lid with paint, cloth, dry flowers, beads or what ever you have on hand. Write the remaining ingredients and directions on a nice piece of paper and attached it to the jar. Then they can have homemade cookies with less work any time. Addison might even be able to help decorate which would make it even more special. Baked goods is always really nice also.

Good luck and happy mothers day.

One of the best Mother's Day gifts that you can give is yourself. You could make a card, write on it the love that you have for the person or persons. I am a step-mom and my oldest step-daughter is the only one who ever calls or write to me and she calls daily. Tomorrow is her birthday, and I made her a card, telling her just how much she means to me and how I love her so very much. We talk on the phone or by e-mail if she cannot be around but for me, that love that we share is so awesome that presents cannot convey.

Wishing you yourself a happy Mother's Day.

Picture collages are always a big hit. Coupons to do special things through out the year are fun. I get gold paper and cut them into hearts and write on them. It usually is something like " GOod for a day together" or "a homecooked meal when needed." "Mowing the lawn" Anything that might be fun or helpful for moms. Be creative and play to their like and dislikes. I have done this for Valentines Day.
Good Luck,

Hi T., Was reading your question, and it reminded me of a web site called Familyfun.com. They have craft ideas on there all the time for different things. A lot of them are homemade. A simple one I saw the other day was to make Sachet bags and wrap like three of them together. All you would need is some scrap material and fabric glue I believe. I've gotten some really good ideas from there. Hope you find something or that this helps.

You could make a "painting" with the handprints of you and your daughter. Just get some nontoxic paint at the craft store and some heavy paper, and you're set! Sign and date it, and then put it in a nice frame. We made ornaments decorated with my son's (11 months at the time) handprint for Christmas, and it was a huge hit. Only cost us about $3 per ornament for the supplies. You could also make a "bouquet" of handprints, either with many colors of paint or out of heavy paper cutouts glued together.

Write a special note to each mother on what makes them so special to you and your family. Paint or draw your husbands hand, your hand and Addison's hand - one on top of the other, or overlapping each other. As a Grandmother myself, this would be cherished dearly over monetary gifts. Believe me, they understand that you are on a tight budget and would love this type of gift - you don't even have to spend dollars on a card.

The best kind of gift is the gift of self, I'm sure you can think of something you could do for each of them that doesn't cost any money. The best gift I ever gave was a dvd I had made of old photos. It took time but no money.
