Does the Acai Berry and the Total Cleanse Really Work?

I've been doing some research on ways to lose weight for 2009. I came across a couple of blogs of people who have used the Acai Berry and the Total Cleanse to clean out their systems. I'm a little leary as the blogs are very similarly typed and comments from other people are similar as well. Has anyone had any success with these two items? I know that a pill is not the "quick Fix" However, I do need to do some kind of cleanse.
Thanks in advance your your help!

So What Happened?

After reading all the responses from everyone, and a little more research on my own. I decided NOT to do the cleanse. Plus, when I tried to order them they wanted my credit card just for "shipping and handling" That was a big stopper for me. Anyhow, I found a health tracker on www.prevention.com. You just type in the foods you eat and they figure all your calories. It's great! I've been doing it for 10 days now and I've already lost 5 lbs. All, I'm doing is watching what I eat and how much of it. Thanks to all who sent advice. M.

Hi! I looked into this and found that people that ordered online, had a hard time unscribing. They will send a "free" trial, then charge you like 80.00 a month after that and it's next to imposible to stop the charges. I've been drinking Mone Vie, it has the acai berry in it. Just don't order online, it's trouble, good luck!

Hi M.. I thought about a cleanse but I didn't hear good things about them...kind of scary actually. If it is weight loss you are looking for, I have some thoughts. I found a company that has some amazing products to help curb my appetite and provide me with proper nutrition so my body doesn't crave foods I don't need. Their vitamins have helped me tremendously. After a month I had dropped 4 pounds without doing anything different other than taking the vitamins. That helped motivate me to keep going. They have a sports nutrition line of products along with other wellness products that are free of chemicals and are better for your health, environment and your wallet. I would love to share more with you as I have with other moms. Call me at ###-###-#### and I can help you get the products from the manufacturer at a discounted price.

I was curious about the acai berry also... doesn't look too promising from what people have written here.

I had put on some extra pounds after having my 1st son and so I backed off on how much I was eating & started exercising...and I GAINED MORE WEIGHT!! What the heck? Then I broke my foot & couldn't exercise (I'd been doing walks with my little guy in the stroller.)

I can't remember how now, but I came across a book by Dr. Mark Hyman called "Ultrametabolism." I did his "detox diet" which is probably all you'd really need in terms of a cleanse. It helps you jumpstart your weight loss and then as you add foods back in, you can see if any food aren't working well with your body.

And his book explained why I was gaining weight: because by exercising & cutting calories at the same time, I made my body think I was starving so it was storing everything! Man, no wonder so many diets don't work!

Anyway, I lost about 7-8 lbs in the 3 weeks on the detox diet. But I also got a better handle on how to eat better...and it wasn't about eating less of everything. I ditched the cooking spray and started slathering everything in olive oil, for one thing. (Yum.) And I learned how to better balance my carbs with fiber (those fiber tablets and wafers work great as a backup plan when you've got a meal with too many carbs) and protein.

I ended up losing about 25 lbs in 6 months, and it felt like I wasn't even trying! You can probably find the book at your local library. Just don't sign up for their emails unless you want to get inundated. ;)

Best of luck!

Hi M.. I have been trying these two things out for myself to see. First of all I do really good with the acai berry and love how much energy it gives me. I have been on it for two months and only lost 2 lbs with no exercise besides being a mom lol, so the weight thing hasn't quite worked. But I just started the total cleanse on Dec. 10th and at first it gave me the runs really bad and kinda made me feel like I have the flu. but that was only one day. I have not lost any since I have been on both but hopeing it will pay off soon. Also becareful cuz they are not FDA approved. My sister also took acai berry and she started not breathing right and feeling week so she had to get off it. so I think its kinda scarry to be on. So My advice would be to watch how your body first reacts to it when you are on the free trial. But with my side effects it was worth it to me for the energy and helping my skin! Hope this helps. If you have any more questions feel free to ask I'm just a regular SAHM so I know how you feel!!

____@____.com
Also I am taking the Acai Fuel Extreme, and the company i get it from is great and cheaper than most i have seen. I tried the other ones and not one helped as much as this one.

M.,
I am like you and was ready to try anything. I ordered both of my free trials and have had nothing but a headache ever since. I did actually recieve my acai berry and have been taking it with a liquid form that I got at our health food store. This product is great as far as energy goes, but have had nothing as far as weight loss goes. The total cleanse was another story. I never recieved my free trial (which was 3 months ago) they continued to charge my credit card $78.00 a month, and I have repeatedly tried to cancel the order. The toll free number that they had on their web site was not a working number for over a month and they give you some live chat rep over the computer to answer your questions that I had to wait for over an hour for each time. They all told me that they had no record of any of my cancellation requests and refused to refund my money. They also told me that there company does not directly deal with the public, so I was always redirected to a company that just represents them. Needless to say I fought with them tooth and nail for over a week. Luckily I had printed off all my live chats and printed off my cell phone record and faxed them all the information 3 times. Afetr a couple weeks I think they just got tired of me, I did threaten to report them, and I recieved all my credit back to my credit card. I would be very careful with this company, they don't seam to have their stuff together. I tried a 7 day body cleanse that I got at our health food store that did a great job of cleansing my body and making me feel not as bloated. I would try that.
Also, I did order the HCG diet. I would research that if I was you. It has had amazing results and totally resets your body and metabolism. I lost about 30 pounds my first cycle, and am getting ready to do my second. Just google HCG diet and you will find alot of info as well as clinics in your area that provide it. I strongly recommend reading the book so you can fully understand the diet. I decided on the Body Solutions clinic in Colorado Springs. They had the best price. If you want more info, just e-mail me.
Good luck to you.

A good friend and I were just discussing what a waste of money this was for her. It did nothing. She felt great but no weight loss at all. It if were me, I'd spend the money on a trip to a homeopathic doctor and they will tell you exactly what you need that WILL work instead of going from one trial to the next. I'd be happy to refer you to mine. There is a class in the next two weeks about nutrition, all the classes are free. They address things like stress, time managment, nutrition, weight loss, so your whole body is healthy and in sync. It's about a whole lifestyle change and not just losing weight.

Hi, M.. I'm not very familiar with either of those...sorry! I did want to pass on to you a great cleanse that I do every six months: Whole Body Cleanse. You can get it at the Vitamin Cottage or probably any health food market. It comes in a green box and has a drink mix, and four pills to swallow at night. It's fabulous, because it has a comprehensive list of things you can eat or not to while cleansing that will enhance the benefit of the herbs taken to clean the liver and intestines. Warning: I haven't done it since I've started back on the pill and am not sure if it will be counterproductive.

Happy Cleansing!

All my best in your new endeavor for the year!! You can definitely do it and you've gotten a lot of good tips so far. Just my 2 cents, but the Acai berry isn't a miracle berry. ITs a powerhouse for anti-oxidants, similar to pomegranates or grapes, but thats it. It doesn't have an special things going for it, other than that. So, save your money and drink grape juice or, if you're feeling flush, pomegranate juice. ( see Dr Mercola's site)

Then do all the things mentioned, change small things in your daily diet: more veggies, less starch. More fruit fewer snack foods. More walking and biking, less TV. You know this stuff, its just a matter of committing to it! Here's to the new you!

Hi M.!

I've also wondered the same thing because I need to loose about 70 lbs as well. I think the blogs are created by the same company as the ads we've been seeing. I don't believe they are by true customers. I've wondered if this stuff really works also, however, have you noticed how expensive they are? They would right around $150 a month! But hey - if they work, it would be worth it!

Can't wait to see other responses to your question!

Three things for you.

1- Where did we get (in our society) the idea that we need to "cleanse" before we start a diet. It really isn't necessary, just start changing your eating habits and activity habits. Eat healthy, lots of fruits and veggies and whole grains for all the fiber (legumes are great too!) and your digestive tract will constantly and gently cleanse itself out.

2- Don't go "on a diet". Change your diet (the word originally meant lifesstyle, specifically eating habits). You want to make changes you can follow pretty well for life, or you'll just end up gaining that weight back, which is bad for your health (gaining, loosing, gaining, loosing - not good). Weight is simply a law of thermodynamics. Meaning calories in vs calories out. If in is more that out, it will be stored as fat. If out is more than in, the difference will be made up by burning fat. Best way is to increase out (by excercising both cardio and muscle - muscle burns more calories even at rest) and reducing in by eating fewer calories. Fill up on veggies. They are yummy, there's a huge variety, they're full of vitamins and fiber, so you feel full. Also, eat whole grains instead of refined (whole wheat bread, brown rice, etc). Fruit makes a great desert. Don't cut out the carbs, protein, or fat all the way - our body needs all 3, and it doesn't really help. Just reduce the amount by eating healthy and watching your portions. (When I was loosing weight I tracked my calories daily. I kept a quart of really good ice cream in the freezer, and if my calories at the end of the day were low enough, I had 1/4 to 1/2 cup ice cream - measured - that I ate very slowly, to treat myself for a good eating day.)

3- Don't be disappointed if you don't loose all the weight this year. Expect to loose maybe 3 to 5 pounds a week - and that's if you're really careful about what you eat and exercise 5 days a week (1/2 to 1 hr a day at most). And it will slow down as you get closer to your goal. It's not healthy to loose a lot faster than that, and you'll be more likely to regain it later. Remember, you're changing your eating habits and lifestyle to be healthier, not just dropping pounds. So plan on maybe 50 lbs this year and then 25 next year - if you're really disciplined. After all, I bet it took you more than 1 year to put on the weight, it will take more than 1 year to get rid of it.

Good luck! You CAN do it!!

Try just drinking three cups of green tea daily, if you don't like hot tea cool it off and pour over ice. This will help your system a lot. I don't believe a cleanse is good unless after it you plan on really changing your diet afterwards. I just read in Redbook that cleanses though seem effective will just backfire and the best method is to change your eating habits, walk daily, workout and doing both will be the best thing. Extremes in dieting fail miserably. I got sick last January. I lost 22lbs while sick as I stopped snacking at night, quit drinking a few glasses of wine a week, drank a lot of green tea. I continued the tea as it really helped me it seemed. I felt better, full of anti oxidants and it was just listed as a good super food to include in your diet.
Whole grains, less sugar, no trans fat, more fruits and veggies helped me tremendously.
Now with the holidays and not walking daily like I was I probably gained a few pounds back, but just walking daily, no snacking needlessly and picking better choices for meals and the green tea helps keep it off.
I am 44 so keeping weight off is more of a challenge but it has worked.
Acai berries have great nutritional value, so do blueberries, pomegranites and other berries, just add them to your meals.
Good luck! Walking is powerful, it has helped me a ton! Walking the dog, walking my kids to school, it melts off fast if you keep up with it.
