Both of my children, 3 and 9 months, have teribly dry skin. My youngest gets little rough patches that feel like a calus. Any suggestions on soothing dry skin? Baby lotions don't seem to be working.

What can I do next?

For overall hyrdration (like after a bath) I've found that Aveeno products work best on my boys' dry skin (like the Baby Aveeno relief cream). Then for those scaly patches and chapped cheeks, a little Aquaphor tends to clear it right up. Can't wait until summer (when we'll all complain about sunblock!) :)

My oldest has really dry skin on his cheeks that gets really bad in the winter, especially if we go outside. I use Eucerin before bed and after bathtime. It works well. You could also try an oatmeal bath.

My son used to get really bad dry patches on his cheeks and so does my daughter. I put lanolin cream on them and I've also found that Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream works great on those dry patchy areas. Also put lotion on them right after bath to lock in the moisture.

I use my lotions on my son who also has rough patches, I stay away from baby lotions because they don't seem to help. I have been using Mary Kay hydrating lotion.
After bath it helps to put the lotion on when they are still a bit wet. Helps lock in the moisture. Good Luck!!

My sister's son has horrible dry skin. She started using the Arbonne NurtiminC I believe it is (orange bottle) lotion for your body on him and it has worked fantastically. She said its is so worth the cost. She said she plans on buying one bottle a year to use over the winter just for him.
I use Aveeno baby for myself and my kids. I also saw they make an Aveeno Excema formula. That might be worth a shot.
Limiting baths is big one too. You might also want to get a humidifier for your house to up the humidity. That helps too. I also switched to free and clear detergents and dryer sheets for the winter. I figure one less irritant on already dry skin can't hurt.

I am a stickler about creams/lotions because of all of the added fragrences, preservatives, and petrolatum. First, throw out everything you have with petrolatum in the ingredients...it acts as a barrier and cannot absorb in the skin. Hence, any moisturizers you are using with this in it is NOT working. However, it is great foer minor cuts and scrapes and the such because it does protect the skin. But, The lotion/ointment that I have used on my 4 month old's very dry, irritated and eczema skin is Lanolin. Get the brand Lansinoh, it it intened for cracked nipples from breastfeeding. This particular brand is medical grade and safe if your baby ingests some. I use it for diaper rash, dry patches on my skin and my 2 year olds and all over my 4 month old...it works, it is natural, and has no preservatives. Good luck, I know how it feels to want their precious skin to feel better.

I agree with Mary- the ABC line from Arbonne is simply wonderful. Super pure and safe, and it actually works. I am an Arbonne consultant, and you can feel free to contact me with any questions. I mentioned this in another answer, too, that I am actually offering 50% off all skin care sets, the ABC baby line included, until the end of February. (I'm up for a promotion, so I'm putting in this bulk order to get a bunch of volume and share this discount!) Let me know if you are interested in trying this. I do very highly recommend it!

Definitely steer clear of chemical ingredients. I use the baby lotion from Daisy Blue Naturals and I use pure shea butter on really really dry areas. I can give you the information if you drop me a note.

Try Vanicream. It was developed especially for cancer patients and people with sensitive skin. It has no dyes, fragrances etc. A pediatrician at Mayo suggested it for our daughter when she had some extremely dry patches on her legs. It cleared up almost over night. We like the skin cream best. It's thicker than the lotion, but the lotion is great too. They also have soaps and shampoos (called Clear and Free) and I think sunscreens too.

My son was diagnosed with atopic dermatitis and eczema when he was 5 months old. We battled dry skin constantly and were getting mixed messages on the treatment recommended by the dermatologist from our pediatrician. I tried daily use products from a company called Arbonne and it made a tremendous difference in my son's skin. The itchiness and redness is gone. If we use it regularly, his dry skin and eczema remain under control. I'd love to share this product with you if you'd like.

Lotions with oils won't work because synthetic oils clog pores and simply lubricate the outer layer. As soon as the oil rubs off, the dryness returns.

Be sure and always check the ingredient labels because our skin is the largest organ in our body and everything that you put on it will get absorbed into your bloodstream and organs. We owe it to our kids to be sure they're using natural products.

Have you tried L'Bri Pure n' Natural? Aloe vera is the very first ingredient and the rest of the ingredients are vitamins, minerals, herbs and botanicals. There are no synthetic oils, no harsh chemicals, no artificial scents or colors and it will penetrate into the skin and heal it from the inside, out. L'Bri's lotion is probably all your kids need, but there's an amazing body wash and Intense Moisture cream that would do the trick also.

Check out my website at suenelson.lbri.com. If you'd like to try some samples, just get in touch with me.

I would try some oil. You can try the baby oil or neutragena sesame oil ( I prefer the neutragena) use it after bath.

If it continues I may consult doc for possibel eczema or phorisis(sp).

Good luck. We've got to love winter.

Try the Arbonne Baby Care (ABC) set. It is gentle enough for the youngest skin. Its also tear free and gentle and mild. The body lotion is formulated for delicate skin to soften and condition to reduce redness and irritation. I am an Independent Consultant for Arbonne and feel free to give my a call, I am listed under the local business.

Mineral oil is occlusive. You will want to use essential oils because that will penetrate the skin. The other things that you will want to make sure is that the ph of the products is the correct ph for your babies sensitive skin.

Have a great day!

I agree - RENEW from Melaleuca is THE BEST! I use all of their products but I especially love this one. It is so gentle and non-greasy. I've used it for years and have used it on my two kids from the time they were babies. You can check online for all of their products. They also have children's shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, and bubble bath. We switched over all of our products (home, cleaning, personal care, etc) when my daughter was born so as to limit the amount of chemicals she would be exposed to. Great company with great safe products that are economical.

Best thing I have found is Vanicream. It is made by Mayo Clinic. Target can order it in their pharmacy or I think you can order off the net. I believe Aspirus Clinics pharmacy carries it also. After 24 hrs baby smooth again. Good luck!

Hello,

One of the best lotions you could use is Renew from Melaleuca. My kids have rough patches and dry cracked skin from time to time, but I have been using this lotion for close to 10 years now and it fixes everything. Find more info at www.melaleuca.com, or contact we at ____@____.com.

This is what I do it's the cheapest and works the best in my choice.

I only give my daughter a bath/shower as few as possible during the week in the winter months. She's not outside getting sweaty or dirty so it's not that hard to do.

I then will bathe her, and when she get's out I dry her off and have her stand with legs and arms out like when the police arrest someone. I slather on the generic of Eucerin creme from Walmart called Equate- Dry Skin Cream it comes in a tub. It's extremely thick and creamy. I slather that on about a 1/4 inch thick and then put her pjs on so she doesn't make a mess on furniture and it locks the moisture in. By morning her skin is smooth and soft. My duaghter has eczema and this is our best remedy and even beats prescriptions creams and is alot safer too. If my daughter's hands are bad I will do the same method but have the sleep with socks or mittens on her hands.

Blend a few drops of 100% pure lavendar oil with some sweet almond, olive, or canola oil (preferably "cold-pressed"). Add to each bath. Lavendar sooths irritated skin, & the oils will help their bodies retain their natural moisture. Always use a good-quality lotion after each bath, slathering it on thickly before the skin is completely dry. We like Lubriderm for dry skin. We use Eucerin on the problem areas (my daughter has very sensitive skin; had eczema as a baby/toddler, & we all experience very dry skin in our cold winters here in ND).
