Eucerin, Aquaphor, & Elidel...Elidel is better than the steroid creams that the doc gives you because you can use Elidel every day. That really cleared up my son's excema.

Hi, sorry to hear you little one has eczema. Two of my three children have it. Yes, you should avoid detergents/shampoos, etc with perfumes/dyes. Also, stop using dryer sheets..for ALL loads. They leave behind a very irritating chemical on the inside of the dryer. That helped my children a lot.

Also, I suggest going to an allergist. Ultimately, we needed to find out what was causing the eczema. Eczema is an allergic symptom. For example, we found out my youngest is very allergic to milk protein (not human). He was getting eczema from the dairy I was eating while breast feeding. Even though he is now 2, we still avoid all dairy products for him.

Hi A.!! I would have to agree with Janette!! Getting all the toxins and chemicals out of your home and using the all natural, safer products, the eczema will eventually go away! I recommend giving them a try!!

Two things that helped us:

1 - We used Eucerine cream for his lotion. It is like paste, and it comes in a little pot.

2 - We started using detergents w/o perfumes or dyes - such as All Free and Clear.

I too have had great success with using Melaluca tea tree soaps and lotion on my son's eczema. I still use these products on my son but limit exposure to big flair ups and once a week maintenance. I work on getting things out of his diet and environment that seem to exacerbate his eczema.

Why limit the use? The NIEHS released a completed study in the New England Journal of Medicine earlier this year that links the use of tea tree and lavender to prepubertal gynecomastia in boys but also believe this may affect girls, further studies needed. The study was done on a set of boys (4, 7, & 10) to determine what caused them to develop breast tissue. Discontinued use of both essential oils corrected the problem in a couple of months and no long term side efforts are expected.

I've found nothing better than the Melaluca products to relieve my son's eczema and I've tried a lot of the products mentioned by others in response to your request. Unfortunately natural remedies are not always the panacea of safeness we'd like to believe they are and must be scrutinized with as much veracity as over the counter and prescription drugs. I have a wonderful Herbalist who has an advanced degree in Biology that provides me with a lot of guidance on natural remedies. I have terrible eczema that gets worse with pregnancy! I am now 4 months pregnant and it is worse. I have been limiting my diet of sugar and dairy but it is extremely hard to do while monitoring my intake of a nutritious diet all together! I saw a dermatologist that gave me a sample of SARNA and I love it. I was nervous about the CAMPHOR as this is something to steer clear from during pregnancy. The dermatologist also gave me TRIAMCINOLONE ACETONIDE. This, in particular, I try not to use very often. I was told by a friend to try refrigerating Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) (with the "Mother"), it is all natural (Diluted half water and half ACV) however, I still feel the itchiness after it dries completely. I may continue to try it in combination with Sarna. I definitely recommend looking at your diet to see what may possibly be irritating my skin to begin with.
I would love any additional options not mentioned in previous answers as I have added each of the previous recommendations to my list to try. However, during pregnancy I am leery to try new things.

I came back to edit my answer! I found something that has HELPED me DRAMATICALLY! I would highly recommend giving a diaper rash cream with 40% Zinc Oxide a try! (I use the Equate brand) It has completely stopped the itchiness and will help it heal. It doesn't take away that fact that eczema is actually your body's way of saying you need to discontinue something in your diet....such as Sugar or Dairy. But it has definitely been the answer for me! I really hope this helps you all! I just wish I would have been told this more than 20 years ago!!

My son was about 2 when he started having eczema breakouts. His usually starts when we have to turn the heater on for the winter and it dries out his skin. I was told that milk and dairy products aggravate the problem as well as using dryer sheets for laundry (it is a chemical that stays on the clothes). So when he starts breaking out, I limit milk to only once a day or not at all, replace with calcium fortified juice. Then I get him to drink lots of water to keep his skin hydrated, and flush out the dairy from his system. Then wash his clothes seperately with as little soap as possible and no dryer sheets. Also, he takes less baths and in cooler water, and lots of aquophor as soon as he gets out. Hope this helps!

Wanted to let you know that Eucerin cream is definitely the way to go for moisturizing... (WalMart sells their generic of Eucerin for less than $4.00 a tub, compared to over $12 per tub for the brand name Eucerin. They also have generic Cetaphil cleanser, etc.) Slather him up with it twice a day, plus IMMEDIATELY upon exiting the tub, while his skin is still wet to seal in the moisture.

For bathing, use a NON-FOAMING lotion cleanser with no fragrance. The one that works best for us is Dove Sensitive Skin Facial Lotion Cleanser. (It's sometimes hard to find with no fragrance.) Basically make sure that you get a cleanser that is a LOTION and that is does NOT foam and it does NOT have any perfumes or fragrance.

When you have really bad flare-ups, use Protopic on his face. (Elidel has been found to cause problems and I don't know if they even prescribe it anymore... Our dermatologist does not....) Then, use a steroid on his body. Your pediatric dermatologist should prescribe the lowest dose steroid that will help for these flares. Our pedi-derm is Dr. Ghali in Grapevine. We've heard from several other doctors that he's the best in the business in this area.

One new thing that we are going to try is this: Our daughter gets horrible scaly patches on the tops of her feet. They crack and bleed and leave thick calluses. The steroids and generic Eucerin help a little, but not a lot. I've read many times on Excema groups that living near the ocean helps with excema. Well, we went to Port Aransas this weekend for 4 days and my daughter's feet are completely healed! She was at the beach for several hours per day, plus she swam in the chlorinated pool (which also helps) every day for an hour or so. We're going to try some epsom salt foot soaks followed by Eucerin cream every other day or so and see if it helps. If not, we will try using sea salt soaks, too. Then, if either of these works, we'll start adding the salt to her bath water and then rinse her off under the shower spray right before she gets out of the tub....

I agree with the ARBONNE recommendations. Both my duaghter and son suffer with eczema. We tried everything, but nothing seemed to work. The only thing that mildly worked was the Gentle Naturals eczema cream, but it left their skin very greasy and of course, it got on everything--the couch, the sheets, their clothes, etc. We were about to put them on medication when my neighbor introduced me to the Arbonne Baby care line. After about 3 days, I noticed a HUGE difference. After about a week, all traces of their eczema were gone! I still maintain the treatment by bathing them in the body wash and applying the lotion after their baths. We have been using the Arbonne baby care line on them for over a year and a half and are still very satisfied. If you'd like a sample to try, let me know--I'd be happy to help. I know how it feels to see your baby in pain and feel helpless! (FYI, I also have an adult friend with eczema who uses the baby line and it works just as well for her!)

Other things that might be helpful, I switched to Shaklee detergent--they have all-natural products. They have dryer sheets, too, but I've found that those blue rubbery dryer balls that are advertised on TV work great (I found mine at Kohl's.)! I know there are other natural detergents that you can find at Central Market or Whole Foods that work really well, too. Be aware of fragrances in products--fragrances irritate sensitive skin.

Hi, A.. My older son also had Eczema breakouts around the same age as your son. Our pediatrician always prescribed a steroidal cream for them that worked really well, but when my third son came along with the same type of breakouts, someone told me to try Eucerin. Obviously, this is not a preventative measure, and I don't know how severe your son's breakouts are, but this worked really well on my children, and I didn't have to be concerned with the effects of using a steroidal cream too often. Our pediatrician recommends using Dr. Bordeaux's Butt Paste as a body lotion to treat and prevent excema. We've used it in combination with prescription cremes with great success on my daughter that is now 5. Using the Dr. Bordeaux's on her daily really seems to keep the excema breakouts at bay. She uses prescription Ellidel on any "red spots" (excema) with the butt paste applied over the ellidel.

Hi, I too have a baby with eczema. We have run the gauntlet with products and have only found relief recently after seeing a pediatric dermatologist, Dr Galli, in Grapevine. They reccomended using Dove for sensitive skin body wash and Eucerin creme ( not lotion, the one in the pot) My son is also on zyrtec for the itching as well as a non steroid creme for the face and a steroid creme for the bad flair ups on the body. I have found that a short bath everynight and the cream application 2x a day religiously has helped significantly. Also, I do use a natural line of cleaning products and only clean my carpets with steam. The products are Mrs Meyers and work well and don't bother my sons condition. You can't miss a day of the creams, that is most important.

When my daughter was an infant she too had itchy red spots and my doctor recommended I moisturize those areas right after a bath but while the skin is still moist with an over the counter lotion called "Eucerin" it cleared her skin up within a couple of months.

I know a lot of people have already replied, so I'll keep this short... Myself, my son, and my daughter all suffer from excema off and on and other skin allergies. The only thing that has worked for us, and especially my son since he has it the worst, is Arbonne. Just using their regular baby line of wash and lotion worked wonders. I have also used Aveno's natural line and it works pretty well. I have to use the lotion like clockwork, though, if I use Aveno. They have a very thick cream that says on the tube it's good for excema and it works really well. Aveno is also much cheaper than any other reccomendations I've been given.

Hey A.. My son is now almost 16 months and has had eczema since about three motnsh. I found out when he turned 12 months and started on whole milk that he had a lot of food allergies, which was causing his eczema.
Anyway, i use Arbonne baby products. After his baths, i soak him in aquafore. On the days he doesn't get a bath i rub the Arbonne lotion in and the oil on his dry patches. This has kept it under control significantly. We also still use ALL baby laundry detergent which has no fragrence or dyes.

I don't know if you have looked into food allergies, but with my little girl that seems to help more than anything else. She was extremely sensitive to dairy, but seems to have outgrown it for the most part--if I limit it, she can have it. Milk to drink seems to set it off if she drinks a lot during the day. yogurt, cheese and such do not bother her as much, if ever.

Check to make sure it's not allergy related. My niece had a wheat allergy that caused her eczema.

Eucerin lotion is what helped my oldest son when he was really young. But, when I switched all my cleaning products to Melaleuca's Ecosense line and switched our laundry detergents and bath soap to Melaleuca everything went away completely. No more skin problems AT ALL. Now we just deal with seasonal allergies! My 7 year old has had ezcema since she was an infant and we have tried everything. We've used Dove soap, Cetaphil wash and lotion, Aquaphor, Eucerin cream and lotion, we've seen a dermatologist and an allergist and tried using some prescription lotions as well as Protopic Ointment, Elidel, and another steroid cream. She also takes Zyrtec and Singular daily. Most of which we saw little change. It was sooo frustrating. We found out she was allergic to many indoor allergens such as mold and dust mites. We've ripped out all our carpet and put in wood floors. My sitter for my 1 year old orders products from Melaleuca. She ordered me the Renew Lotion and some detergents and soap and body wash. I think it's all chemical free. We started using it and I'm amazed at the change. Her skin is so smooth and we've been able to stop using all the steriod creams and ointments. I think you have to sign up to be able to order from the company, but I'm not sure. I know someone on here will know how to get a hold of it for you. It is worth a try. Have you been to an allergist? It may be a food allergy like milk or eggs.

Hi A., My son, too, has issues w/ his skin. I have found that something is always causing it. In my son's case, it is certain foods. Maybe this is the case for your son. Watch what he eats carefully (and/or if you're still breastfeeding, watch what you eat) and see if you can connect his reactions to a food. Or take him to a doctor and have him tested for allergies. No creams or soaps helped my son; it was all in what I gave him to eat. And we found all this out when he was 6 mo. old and solely breastfeeding so we had to have him tested. Good luck.

My husband has this. At the age of 36 his hands are deeply scarred and bleed if left untreated. We have tried everything from the high dollar meds, shots, and even cleaning the house of all the toxins. We found with his eczema it is being caused by stress and the humidity levels in the climate irritate it. I grew up on a cattle ranch with my Grandpa and he suggested Bag Balm. You can buy it over the counter. It comes in a green old fashioned looking square tin. The price is 4.99 for the small one and 13.99 for the big one. You can find this at CVS, Walmart, or yes a feed store. This product is actually used for cow utters when the become damaged from the milking process or an agressive calf in the nursing process. They get extremely chapped and often can bleed. Just like people who suffer from eczema. It doesn't burn. This looks like a golden vaseline. When my hubby's flair ups are really bad (meaning bleeds all over the sheets and anything he touches) I put this on him and wrap his hands in saran wrap at night. The hands will start to sweat and allow this balm to really do the job. After a few nights of this he is back on the road to recovery. I don't keep it on him, because he won't let me! :) I guess that is a stupid "man thing"! But being as young as your little one is I don't think he will object to terribly. It is just the older ones!!! LOL!

So sorry to hear about your son. I have suffered off & on with eczema all my life. At 13 months, I was told I had to sleep with socks on my hands to keep from itching and my sister that is a year older had it also. Luckily, she outgrew it. If your son is not really scratching now, maybe he will outgrow it. I highly recommend Sarna lotion. I definately would not use Dove, I was only allowed to use Ivory for years or oatmeal soap to bathe in. I have never had any problem with Lever 2000. I never felt clean with the ivory or the oatmeal soap. My biggest triggers have always been water, SWEAT - some times feels like acid, especially on my neck. When I was little they gave me Benadryl to get to sleep, when you still had to get a prescription, eventually I became resistant to that and we joined the world of steroids. I had to use Cortizone cream, again used to could only get it with prescription. And for good reason, I found out years later. Mostly because I was using it on a daily basis on my face, starting at 13, at 25 while the Doctor was writing me another prescription, he said "We're going to have to find something else because we have discovered it eats up the fatty tissue in your face and it's going to lead to prematrue wrinkles and they will be bad. It did and they are. I wish Doctors would make some connection with Hormones, because I'm pretty convinced there is a Big Connection. My skin eczema did go away as a little girl but came back at 12 with a vengence. Right about the time, I got my first period. I cleared up beautifully with each pregnancy (4 children) but would be broke out within a week after their birth. I had a partial hysterectomy, left my ovaries and Dr.'s said, I would not go thru any hormone change because they left the ovaries. My skin eczema cleared up overnight and did not come back until I started going through the first stages of menopause. I still have to use a little Cortaid but as long as I have my hormone patches, I don't. I was surprised at when I started using Sarna that it helped as much as it did. My sons, 3 of them had it slightly when they were little but not enough for concern. One of my sons when he hit puberty would go out and sweat from playing basketball and would come in looking like someone had poured acid on his chest. He too completely outgrew it by 18. A little bit of Cortaid is fine for the little patches that break out (use cream not ointment) I have heard alot of good things about prescription Elidel, which has no steroids. I might ask his pedatrician for a prescription for the times he does have breakouts and you don't want him scratching. I'm sorry for all the rambling but skin eczema can get very debilitating. I had to quit school because of being made fun of, not only is it miserable but embarrassing. Hopefully, your son will grow out of it. The one thing I do know for sure is do not use hardly anything with fragrance added to it. Even fabric softeners are a big No, No. Best of Luck & my Heart goes out to you and your little one. I know my Mother suffered right along with me and spent a fortune she didn't have.
