Yes it is totally normal. I starting loosing it 3 months after my son was born. Yes it does grow back!! It sucks but it's something we have to go through.

I went thru the same thing when my daughter was 3-4 months old. Now at 20 months old, I see my hair with frizzies all over the place. It is taking time to grow back.
I took Biotin vitamins and used Nioxin shampoo, conditioner and scalp therapy. They worked for me before earlier and they worked again. The hair stuff is pretty pricey but a bargain at Supercuts. Good luck!

I had this issue with both kids. It will stop soon, just bare with it. I took every precaution to not lose MORE hair by not brushing it when wet (wash at night and brush it in the morning, if possible). Also, keep taking your multi's or prenatals. I know some good multi's, if you need help finding one. Take calcium, or drink/eat enough calcium rich foods 3 times/day. Also, I started drinking bio-sil. You can get it at Henry's, whole foods, jimbos. Put it in v8 juice or Emergen-C. It tastes pretty bad, but it worked well for me. I still use it a couple of times a year (for a few weeks) and it keeps my hair thick and full.

Yep- totally normal!! I gave birth to a little girl in July and I was amazed daily at the amount of hair I was losing. I couldn't understand how I had any hair left on my head... About a month ago it finally started growing back in, and the amount I lose has diminished greatly. I am sure the same will happen for you as well... good luck!

Yes, it is normal... Scary! But normal. Especially if you are breastfeeding. My doctor said it was caused by your hormones being all out of wack... So don't worry, chances are you will NOT go bald! lol (Although it sure feels like it, doesn't it?!)

Tons, or lots can be addressed with self care and/or a call to your healthcare provider. Eat frequently throughout the day. 5 or more small meals & do not go hungry, take vitamins religiously (a good pre-natal, even though your not pregnant, calcium w/ magnesium, b complex, fish oil and c with bioflavanoids), and rest up mama! You sleep when your baby sleeps. Many moms forget to keep that going as the kiddies grow, but you still need it. It'll slow the hair loss down. Sometimes it can take a surprisingly long time for your body to bounce back.

While pregnant, your body doesn't shed as much. Nature's way of making sure you stay warm to incubate. Then, once you've had the baby, you lose about 1 year's worth of hair that you normally wouldn've shed, so it seems like a LOT more suddenly. Unless you're also experiencing gaping bald spots, I wouldn't worry.

Hi T.,
As most people are saying, this is normal. With both my babies around 4 months I started noticing a lot more hair loss. That is because while you are pregnant you DON'T lose as much hair, so around 4 months after birth, your hormones start returning to normal and your body starts to "make up" for holding on to all of that hair.
Of course, if you're really worried, definitely see your doctor.

HI

Yes this is normal, also your thyroid is reacting to changes in your body. remember, losing over a 100 strands of hair a day is normal for everyone, you just see a little more because of the birth of your child. Remember also to make sure your table salt is salt with iodine. This helps regulate a lot of this. Your hair falling from the root is just making way for new hair, the hair that breaks is brittle do to the lack of certain vitamins, due to pg.
remember that is why your doctor put you on them..
eat healthy and don’t worry.

It's crazy but normal. My doctor told me that our hair is on a 4 month cycle. After having a child, at about 4 months we will lose a lot but it DOES grow back. And it does!! : )

Oh my gosh yes, my hair is so gross right now! When I part my hair at any given place on my head there are like rows and rows of hair that is finally coming back. It is totally normal and happens to most women. It will come back, it just takes a little while. Mine started to fall out at 1 month pp and it has just now stopped (at 5 months pp)

T.,
I am currently experiencing the same thing (my daughter is almost 5 months old),and yes it is scary! I am losing in chunks, so much it is clogging my shower drain :) And all over the bathroom floor! It is completely normal, and have heard of other moms having the same problem. Someone had recommended I take vitamins to help, but I haven't taken any yet. I heard it goes away 8 to 12 months after you give birth.

I lost lots of hair too from 3 months to 6 months after my son was born. My hair is long too so it was really easy to see that it was everywhere! I'm pregnant again and I am considering cutting my hair shorter after my baby is born so it won't seem like it is everywhere : ) It eventually stops, don't worry! You stop loosing hair like you normally would when you are pregnant, that is why it is so full and thick, so after the baby is born, your head sheds all that extra hair.

It happened to me, too. Extreme amount of hair loss for several months. And I can remember 2 other posts recently asking about the same thing, so you are definitely not alone! I think the baby's hair loss is the natural process of losing the hair they are born with, then they grow their new hair (I didn't notice it with my own babies, but I think I have heard of it). As for your hair loss, I was told that it is part of the natural changes going on in your body. When you are pregnant, you do not lose much hair at all, typically. Your body is in "storing" mode so it even holds on to hair. Then a few months after the baby is born, it lets it all go! I was losing so much hair that I was afraid that I wouldn't have any left! But I still have plenty of hair. After my first baby was born the hair loss began, I was quite nervous. Then I got pregnant again (when my first baby was 6 months old) and that put an immediate stop to the hair loss! Don't worry, you don't have to get pregnant to make it stop - it should return to normal by the time your baby is about a year old, but I can't remember. After baby #2, I couldn't really tell how long the extreme hair loss lasted. It still feels like I lose more now than I used to (and the baby is 2-1/2 years old now) but it is not as obvious as it was at first, and I still have enough hair on my head!

I didn't experience it but my midwife says it's from mineral deficiency. If you don't have adequate minerals, your body can't absorb nutrients & vitamins from your food or supplements/ vit's.... I used trace mineral drops in a shot of juice...they help w/ low energy too. also make sure you're getting enough good fats....EFA's...that's VERY important for a nursing mom....hang in there!

Hello, I have experienced hair loss after all three of my pregnancies. I thought my doctor didn't know what she was talking about so I got a second opinion and that second opinion said the same thing. With my third child actuall second. It was no surprise. It's just your hormones. And if you have gotten on some type of birth control. Like the depo shot it has a side affect of hair loss.

This is definitely normal. I went through it too. Now my son's about 8 months old and my hair is not falling out as much as it looks like it's breaking at the roots around my part and at my hairline. I have little babies hair which again is from the hormones. So if you experience that at some point it's normal. Good luck!

It is very normal...according to my hairdresser. I lost lots of hair with both of my children. It will grow back. She explained to me that while you are pregnant you don't loose much hair because of hormones...then when the baby is born you loose lots because your hormones change again and all the hair that you didn't loose while pregnant comes out after birth with the hair that you would normally loose. She also said to cut your hair shorter while the hair grows back...because if your hair is long then when you are brushing your hair you are tugging harder to get through the hair and you are more likely to pull more hair out. Plus while your hair is growing back in you will have little short places where it grows back...so to even this out it is wise to cut your hair shorter. I hope this makes some sense...you are normal. This doesn't happen to all women, but most women.

Yes! Totally normal. My hair stylist warned me, and I was still blown away w/how much hair I lost. It will, eventually subside. I thought I might be going bald! (you're not)

Apparently our bodies don't lose any hair at all while we're pregnant (to protect the little one), so it makes up for lost time afterward. No stress!

Yes, totally normal! I lost sooo much hair, for months. It is due to hormone changes. I had to buy draino for all out sinks because i kept getting clumps of hair down the drain, i had to vacuum constantly because when i walked barefoot, i could feel hair on the floor that had fallen out! It will get better, you will not lose it all(:

T., I haven't had time to read all of your responses so if this is already mentioned, I apologize.

Go get a good haircut. That helped me when I was going through the same thing after my daughter's birth. Once your hair is cut you should notice alot less hair loss. Good luck and congratulations on your new baby!

It does seem freaky, but it does grow back. My baby is just about 6 mos old and I started to lose a lot of it when he was about 2 mos. I still have full head of hair only because its very thick. However noticeable when I would put it back in a ponytail, I looked like I was going bald. Now I have all these baby hairs, so it does grow back. Just make sure to continue to take your prenatal vitamins.
