False Negative Pregnancy Test

I was wondering if I could get some feedback from moms who have had false negative pregnancy tests. Is it true that this can happen? I am two days late, would love to be pregnant, keep getting false reads and am very impatient! Thanks :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for your responses. I have always been very impatient and this has taught me a lesson- it will happen when it happens! Needless to say, after being 7 days late, I got my period (thank God because the doctor told me I might skip one which would have thrown everything off)! This just means another go around of trying- not so bad. And again, I will wait until I really think a pregnancy test is worth it. Your advice really helped- thanks again :)

I got a negative on a test. If I remember correctly, I had a UTI at the time of the test.
Goodluck!

Your HCG levels might be to low to be reading right now.
I would wait a week and test again first thing in the AM.
I used Fact plus for a test. I liked them.
Good luck

Don't want to give you false hope, but...When I was pregnant with my first son I had two false negatives on home pregnancy test & a false positive on an ovulation test (not supposed to say you're ovulating when you're pregnant)! I also had 2 very light periods during this time. While all this was going on, I had dreadful morning sickness & kept thinking, "I must be pregnant" & would take the test again a week later. By the time we finally got our positive, I was 11 weeks along. We called our DS a 'stealth' baby. Good luck!

Hi A.,

When that happened for me I went straight to my midwife and got a blood test done. It was the only for sure way to know if I was pg or not.

Good Luck!:)

Hi A.. Neither of my two pregnancy's ever showed postive on an at home pregnancy test, but I was definatly prego! I guess my hormones were just not strong enough. Are you taking them first thing in the morning when it should be the most accurate? I ended up having to have blood test with my doctor both times, and even then didn't show up until I was 4 or 5 weeks, but I have one happy healthy 11 month old and and 4 months into my next successful pregnancy. I knew right along I was, I had all the signs so I trusted that, but its really hard waiting to find out. Good luck!

My uncle is a lab technician that works for a pharmaceutical company - his job is to design better pregnancy tests - so here's what he says: There is no such thing as a false positive pregnancy test, if the test is positive, you are pregnant...period. If the test is negative, that just means that your body has not produced enough hCG for the test to detect it. Every woman is different, some produce enough hCG in the first few weeks of pregnancy to be detected by even the cheapest of pregnancy tests while some women produce so little of the hormone that it cannot be detected. ONLY pregnant women produce the hCG hormone though so if the test is positive, you know the result, but have faith, if you're trying to get pregnant, the level of your hCG hormone practically doubles each day and eventually the test WILL show positive if you are in fact pregnant.

I hope this helps you!!

I was two weeks late, had taken several home tests, and even a blood test at the doctor's office! They were all negative. Finally, when I was 15 days late and really beginning to think something was wrong with me, the home test came up positive. I had an eight-week ultrasound which showed that everything was fine and confirmed the dates. My daughter was born healthy and happy, right on time. Sometimes, the hormone just isn't high enough to register, even on a blood test apparently. Be patient, keep testing, and GOOD LUCK!!

Of course!

It just means that there isn't enough of the pregnancy hormone that they test for in your blood stream yet. I started having distinct pregnancy symptoms (including "morning" sickness) so my doctor told me to take a test--if the symptoms are there, there should be enough hormone to test. (My cycle is all over the place, so we didn't know exactly when I would be considered late.) It took almost a week before the test showed positive--and even then it was just so faint. I had to ask myself, if I were a teenager who desperately wanted it to be negative, could I convince myself that this test was negative? That gave me my positive answer. Oh, and it really did only take just the one time--another reason we weren't entirely sure if I was pregnant!

It is totally normal to have a false negative pregnancy test... my friend had 5 false tests even though she knew she was pregnant... now she has a little girl. Wait a week and take another test. Congratulations!

It can happen. With 2 of my 4 children my early tests were negative, but both of those negative tests resulted in healthy pregnancies and beautiful babies. Good luck!

I agree you may have done the test too early. I also recommend getting the read out test (if you have not already) I like the CVS brand read out...very accurate or Clear Blue Easy worked well for me too. I would wait a week and test again. If it is still negative and you still don't have a period go to your OB/Gyn and they will do a pee and blood test which are very accurate. Good luck!!

I had two false negatives with my oldest. My Dr told me that the tests are designed to a hormone that your body produces only when pregnant. Sometimes it takes a little time for your body to produce enough of the hormone to be detected, especially if it's your first. I would agree with the blood test suggestion. I had to have that with my oldest, and I was two 1/2 weeks late with my some and a home test never was positive. With my next I waited until I was a week late, and then took one of the test designed to detect pregnancy earlier than the rest, and I got the faintest line. Some of us are just different.

I think it is just too early to test, if you are in fact pregnant. The test picks up on the HCG levels in your body and that early your levels might be so low that it isnt detecting them. I never got my positives til at least 7days late with a period. If you become addicted to taking the HPT's, buy the store brand value pack, they cost a lot less money. You are really gonna have to sit back and wait a couple days....... Please let us know how you make out!!

Let me just tell you that this past time around of getting pregnant, I missed my period so I took a test on a Sunday, was completely bummed out that it was negative, but still didn't have my period so on that Wed. I tried again and it was positive. If you still do not have your period, try again a few days later...that is what I did as I was very impatient as well and sure enough I was pregnant. Good luck.

I took 4 home pregnancy tests. I knew I was pregnant - it was planned and my period was 5 days late - still got a negative urine test result. I called my OB and made an appt and got a test done that came back positive.

When I was pregnant, I was about 6 weeks along before I got a positive home pregnancy test, I went through so many tests waiting... I have had friends who were also 6- 8 weeks along before coming up positive. At least it is better than in our parents' generation- they had to wait months to find out for sure!

I have heard of false positives, but not false negatives, as it detects hormone level flucuation in urine. You may be cycling up to someone, and your internal calendar changing, or be so fraught with the concept of getting pregnant, that you delay your body. Try again in a couple of days to see if you are if you haven't gotten it. It is so exciting waiting when you are TTC!
Good luck!

What do you mean by false reads? Are the tests saying you are preg and your not??I would wait untill you are 1 week late and call your doctor and have a blood test!!Hang in there and try not to stress....it will happen when you are not so focused on trying!!I realize its very hard and stressful but really try not worry!!

It happens all the time! You can get a blood test at your gyn or primary care doctor's office - highly accurate, and then you will know! Even with the charge for the visit/test, it's more accurate and probably not more expensive than several more over-the-counter home pregnancy tests. Good luck!

I must disagree with Diane...I believe false positives are very rare, but had 3 false negatives EACH with both my son and daughter. Try to relax, and not get too excited (hard to do) and try another test in a week. The other option would be to call your doc and have them schedule a blood test. It's much more accurate and detects lower levels of HcG. If the blood test is positive, congrats! If that one is negative, keep trying! :)

Hi - I have had 2 false negatives in the past...one because I did it so early and one was just a fluke I guess...a week or so later I had a blood test and I was indeed pregnant. I always had good luck with First Response. I think it was EPT that it was false. Good luck!

My cousin took 7 tests when she was pregnant before having a positive. The doctors explained it by stating that the hormone levels in her body were not very high in the early stages of her pregnancy and the tests did not pick up on the levels. A blood test would've determined it (you can call your doctor and request one).

I have been told that you cannot have a false positive - the only way it will be positive is if you have the hormone in your body. The only way to have the hormone in your body, is if you're pregnant.

Hope this helps & good luck!

Hi A. - Two DAYS late? How can you know that? How many tests have you taken in those two days??

My advice is to relax. Either you are pregant or you are not. Worrying and taking tests won't change it.

If you're not, try again. Just relax.

Hi A.,

With my second child, I took 3 urine store bought pregnancy tests and 1 urine hospital test, all came back negative. Finally I requested a blood one and that came back positive. When my ex-sister-in-law was pregnant with my nephew, she took urine tests until she was 6 months and then finally took a blood and yup, you guessed it...positive. So my suggestion get a blood test.

Hi A.,

Last April I got pregnant. I was a few days late & I just KNEW we had conceived. I felt it even before I missed my period. I took three of the "5 day earlier results" tests before one registered a pink line. So, I'm proof that there can definitely be a false negative on the test!

Try again in a couple of days. If it's negative again & you don't turn out preggo, don't be discouraged, it'll happen!

Best of luck sweetie!
