I had a miscarriage on May 7th, since then my husband and I have had unprotected intercourse one time. This was aprox. three weeks ago. I have not had a cycle, no period or signs, but have been "feeling" pregnant. So I took a test Friday and it showed positive. My question is, is it possible to have a false positive on the home pregnancy test? About a week and a half ago I had slight cramping like i might start soon but still haven't, I have been more tired than normal, extreamly moody, and very nauseated in the mornings. Any advice? Thank you in advance.
Ok so I left some important information out, Sorry ladies. I was about five weeks along had an ultrasound so we know it was a true pregnancy then the doctor monitored my hormone levels all the way to Zero, so we also know that my body completly disgarded the pregnancy. At this point I am scared to get excited and scared to go to the doc.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the advice and words of encouragment. They all made me feel better. I am schedualed to see the doctor on saturday. I took another test and it showed positive right away, no waiting three minutes. Given the signs and feeling sick every morning, I strongly believe that I am pregnant. So we will see the doctors, I think after I hear the heartbeat I will feel much better, thank you everyone for understanding.

The only time you get a false-positive is if you have a hormonal illness, cysts and a few other things can cause the hormone levels to go up which the test reads as positive.
The fact that you feel pregnant and the cramping (which was probably implantation) sounds like a pregnancy.

Hi C.,
Riley is so right. I was pregnant and then had a miscarriage, a few weeks later i was feeling like i could be pregnant again, i think mostly cause i wanted to be, i too took a test and it came up positive. Unfortunatly it was only showing positive because of left over HCG levels in my body. However i will say right after being pregnant you are the most fertile. So it is very possible.
I know it's hard to go back to the doctors and get your hopes up, but its the only way you'll know for sure. You want to know now if you are so you can be taking the best care of yourself possible. I am so sorry for your loss and understand your fear. I lost two babies before having my family. It's horrible, painful, scary, and every other awful thing you can think of, but that doesnt mean the next time will be too. Have faith things will work out. Go see your doctor and just prepare yourself for everything. Try not to get excited yet, but because there is a chance you are you need to go find out. Good luck and please let us know what happens. Im saying some prayer for you tonight.

All 3 dr's I've had, have told me that there are no false positives on a pregnacy test, other than for an illness. Go to your dr. Since you've had a miscarriage, they will probably not mind you going in sooner, rather than later. Stress is bad for a pregnancy and if seeing your dr helps, I'm sure they will agree with you coming sooner.

Good luck!

I'm so sorry for your loss! I too lost a pregnancy nearly two years ago. I was monitored until my hormone levels dropped to 0. About a month later I got pregnant again and now have a beautiful little boy. If they monitored your hormones until all of your levels were 0 then I would say it's VERY unlikely the test is a false positive. I wish you all of the luck and many blessings!

Go to your doctor! Even if they tell you they don't usually see you that soon. :)

I, as so many others unfortunately, had a miscarriage (last March). I also was lucky to get pregnant again very soon after (beautiful son was born March 1 this year). I was a paranoid basketcase, so worried that I would miscarry again. So the reason I tell you to go to your doctor now is that mine were so incredibly awesome and understanding after my m/c. It does happen to a LOT of people but I was so happy that they understood that it didn't make it any less devastating to me.
For prenatal care, mine usually don't schedule the first appointment until about 12 weeks but they saw me earlier, just for confirmation. They also told me I could come in whenever I wanted to check the heartbeat, since early on you only go for once-a-month checks. I held off for a whole week after that first appointment. ;) A nurse then told me that they rent out the dopplar machines. She set me up with one and showed me how to use it. We made a family event of listening together and it really reduced my anxiety level. They said most mamas keep it until about 4-5 months when they can feel the baby move on their own. (mine charged $30/month and that included the blue jelly/lube stuff)
If your doctor or nurses aren't this compassionate, maybe shop for another. I'm proof that they're out there. I was so pleased. They never made me feel like I asked too many questions or was overly anxious either.

Best of luck. I hope you are indeed pregnant and have a healthy and happy pregnancy and baby. :)

Sounds like there is a good chance you are pregnant again. In any case the pregnancy hormone (HCG) is in your body, which only in very rare instances can be caused by something other than pregnancy.

Miscarriages are very common and most women experience at least one in their life and go on to have healthy babies- no reason for you to think you don't have a healthy pregnancy now.

Definitely call doc or midwife ASAP for an appointment and you can relax a bit. Best wishes!!

Hey C.! Since your level did get down to zero after your m/c, I'd say that you are likely pregnant again. The sensitivity of over-the-counter tests vary, but your hormone usually has to be around 20 or more to make you have a positive urine test. I'm sure your doc will do a blood test on you if you call them. Good luck!

The only time it's really possible / common to get a false positive is in the exact situ you described... right after a miscarriage. Becuase the hormone they test for is still in your system. It's also possible to be pregnant.

To find out which it is: go to the doc so that they can start monitoring the LEVELS of Hcg in your system. If they're going up you're pregnant, if they're going down, your body is just normalizing.

I'm so sorry for your loss. How far along were you when you miscarried? I think that would determine whether you still had HCG in our system at this time. I've recently had two false positives on Clear Blue Easy +/- tests... the ones with the blue lines. I would take a test with the pink lines -- Answer of First Respone -- and see what happens. Good luck! I will keep my fingers crossed for you!

Many people believe that you are actually most fertile after a loss, so it is possible you are pregnant again. That being said, was you miscarriage monitored by a doctor? did they check your HCG levels to be sure they went down and the pregnancy actually completely removed itself? If not then it is completely possible that the hormones related to pregnancy are causing all of your symptoms as well as the positive test.
