I was wanting some info about femara...my dr. put me on clomid, but my folicles were small, a lot of them but no mature ones, and she wants to put me on femara now. Has anyone taken this or heard of it, and has it worked for you? How is it different than clomid and is it supposed to work better? thanks!!!

What can I do next?

I have been on femara for 7 months and I don't know if there really is much of a difference except that women who do not respond to clomid will typically respond to femara. Both clomid and femara cause your ovaries to basically shut down for the 5 days you are taking them and then will over work themselves to produce a really good egg. I have been having the same problems as you with the numerous follicles but none of them maturing. That actually happened to me last month so I had to have provera to get me started. My doctor recently increased my dosage to 3 pills per day. I think you would be fine on femara. My fertility doctor mostly uses femara for his patients. Good luck to you

I believe Clomid is an ovulation stimulant and Femara is more to level out your hormones. So, I'd guess the Clomid isn't working, due to you hormones. I would call your pharmacy to see for sure. I have medical books from nursing school, but I always double check with the pharmacist if I don't understand it. I also learned during school to ALWAYS read or at least skim the info sheet that comes with your meds. It sometimes tells you information that your Dr. may not know because it's new or just don't think to tell you because I think that more of a pharmacist question. Some meds you can't eat grapefuit or greens with. It's crazy, but that's the world lf medicine. Well I hope that was some what helpful. Goodluck!

I did Clomid for a year. After a 6 month "rest" of no medication, the doc started me on Femara. On the second month of using Femara I was pregnant! For our next baby, I'm skipping the Clomid and going right back to the Femara. It was a miracle drug for us!

Well I was diagnosed with polysistic ovarian syndrome. My doctor put me on femara along with some other things. This is new to me too but I am glad to know others have gotten pregnant from using it. Anyhow, this what I have found out about Femara:

The drug letrozole, (brand name, Femara) is an aromatase inhibitor, meaning it blocks estrogen production. Although originally introduced to treat postmenopausal breast cancer, letrozole has many possible uses in reproductive medicine. It may be beneficial in the treatment of endometriosis and uterine fibroids, as well as for ovulation induction.

Letrozole is an oral medication. When used to treat infertility it is usually given from day-five to day-nine of a cycle, and acts by decreasing estrogen production in the ovaries and other tissues. When the body does not produce estrogen it triggers the brain to release more follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), which and in turn, stimulates the ovary to produce eggs.

Letrozole and other aromatase inhibitors have been studied as a replacement for clomiphene citrate (CC), a drug commonly used to induce ovulation, and as co-treatment with gonadotropins (injectible fertility drugs) to achieve controlled ovarian hyperstimulation.

Letrozole offers distinct advantages for ovulation induction as compared to CC. Letrozole does not thin the uterine lining as CC may in some women; a good uterine lining is important for an embryo to implant. CC may have a negative effect on uterine blood flow, embryo development, and pregnancy rates. These effects have not been reported with letrozole use. Side effects such as visual disturbances, headache, and hot flashes, common to CC therapy, are less frequent with letrozole.

Letrozole may be used in anovulatory patients (women who do not ovulate), patients with unexplained infertility, controlled ovarian hyperstimulation and intrauterine insemination, and for women undergoing IVF who have had a poor response to gonadotropins.

I hope this helps. Good luck to you!

Hi C.,

I was put on Femara from my doctor and I conceived in two months. The reason why she chose Femara over Clomid is because it has less side effects. Apparently, Clomid can enlarge your ovaries. The only other thing I know is that it can come in different dosage levels and I was started on the lowest level. Let me know if you have any other questions.
