Fever Gone, and Back Again

Last Sunday, my toddler, a little girl aged 1 year and 9 months old, spent the day running around and playing with her cousins. She was perfectly healthy that day, but was irritable during the ride home (which was already night time, so I thought it was because she was sleepy). That night when she slept, I noticed she was snoring more than usual, which led me to think that she might have a cold.

The next day (Monday), I woke up around 4am and checked on her and felt that she was so hot. I got the thermometer and found out that she had a fever of about 38.6 degrees. We gave her paracetamol, and her usual cold medicine, and her fever was gone. After almost 6 hours, the fever came back again. I think it was because the paracetamol has lost effect or something, but we still took her to the doctor, regardless. The doctor prescribed the usual paracetamol (usual here, we have a variety of paracetamol for infants, toddlers and kids), cold medicine for toddlers and a 7-day round of antibiotics for her cold.

On Monday night, her fever was completely gone, and did not recur the entire day Tuesday. When we woke up this morning (Wednesday), we found out that her fever was back (her temperature was 38.9). After taking her medicine, the fever was gone again and did not come back so far. ( I hope she recovers completely)

This is driving me crazy with worry because I don't know what caused her fever to come back. She was perfectly fine yesterday and she was resting the entire time complete with fluids and her medicine.

What can I do next?

K., it sounds like your daughter is fighting something. A fever isn't a bad thing. It is the way a body naturally fights illness. Only if it gets too high as to cause a seizure, is it something to worry about. Why on earth would a doctor give antibiotics for a cold? That doesn't make any sense. Paracetamol is not a safe thing to be giving a child so freely. It is horrible for your liver, potentiallycausing liver failure over time. Let her rest, give her fluids. You can give her peppermint oil in water (one drop is all you need), which will help her regain her health. Give it to her a few times a day. If she is having a hard time sleeping, then you can give her paracetamol, but other than that, I wouldn't.

Your temps are throwing me off, so I can't tell if its a bad fevor or not. If your dr. checked for the basics - ear infection, sinus infection, strep throut - then it could be that she has a sensitivity to something where she was playing on Sunday, and her body just hasn't figured it out yet.

The medicine is masking the fever, not curing what ever is going on with her. There is a good chance she may be getting her 2 year molars. I never really medicated my kids when they were growing up. Also fevers actually aid in an illness, according to some pediatricians I have spoke to. Just keep any eye on her for any changes of behavior, in her eating, sleeping, but I have an 18 month old in my daycare who is cutting her 2 year molars, and her fever was up and down as well. Hope this helps. J.

My child has done this twice now..fever came and went, cranky, but no other symptoms, and it lasted a few days both times. I honestly don't know for sure if she was teething (because she wouldn't let us in her mouth to see) but it's the only thing I can figure out. I'm guessing two year molars. Hopefully we're done with that for a while now.

Check to see if she is teething. She may be starting to get her two year molars.

My friends son was having similiar fevers to what your daughter is going through. She was taking him to the dr., and even to the emergy. rm. Until one of the dr.'s at the emergy. rm checked his throat. Found out he had an infection, and was causing the fevers. Did your daughter get her throat checked? it could be the samething. Or like some of the other ladies said she could also be teething. Hope she feels better.

people tend to get hot when they sleep...could be from dreaming..i don't know why..but maybe she just gets hot when she sleeps...there is an herbal remedy for flu's and colds called Umka..the tea works the best..you pour powder into hot water..but i usually give my son the liquid kind..you can get it at Wholefoods..it cuts the duration of a cold or flu down...if she is ill you can't expect it to just be gone in a day...some flu's take 2 weeks or more..but i have a feeling she just gets hot when she sleeps..i would wait an hour after she's been up and then take her temp and see if she has a fever..if so then give her her meds and after 6 hours take her temp again..if its back up..give her her meds.

I'm not sure giving Paracetemol one time is going to cause her liver problems, especially if it's made for babies but everyone has their own opinion on drugs for children. I agree on the antibiotics - I think doctors give that stuff too freely. With fevers, you should just monitor it and make them as comfortable as possible. You have to make the decision that YOU feel comfortable with regarding giving your child meds. :)
We had the same issue with our 3.5 yr old girl last year - exact symptoms. My doctor said it was a strain of H1M1 or whatever that virus was last year that everyone was talking about/had. He just sent her home and recommended a fever reducer - we kept an eye on it and it went in a couple days. It was truly strange though - had the fever one day, went to daycare for a couple days when it was gone, then they called us because it was back again. She was wiped out. But there were no other symptoms. I'd never seen anything like it. She basically just slept it off.

Good luck!
