Finding Time to Get Exercise in During the Day

During my daughter's 2 hour nap I need to do my work (writing, reading, grading papers, planning classes, etc.). I can't exercise after I put her to bed at 8:30 pm because I can't fall asleep afterwards. Any suggestions as to how to sneak in exercise (other than a daily powerwalk with her) at some other point during the day?

What can I do next?

Hi N.~
This is really funny, but I have to admit to it. At the very least all you moms will get a smile while you laugh at me. My 3 yr old has started liking the Wiggles (although I could do w/o them)! He only gets to watch a limited amount of TV a day, and as I was watching with him, I noticed that those guys are really working out hard. By the end of the show they are drenched! The next time he wanted to watch Wiggles, we both got up and did all the dances/moves that the guys did and I have to say I could hardly make it to the end. What a workout! So if you can't squeeze it in any other time, it's a way to break a sweat!!

N.~I don't know if you are looking to exercise at home or at a gym. Xtreme Fitness has three locations-one in Sterling Heights, one in Chesterfield, and one in Washington Township. At all three of these locations they have daycare so that you can work out while your child can be with you. It might be something to look into. Plus they are doing 0 down 34 a month.
Good luck!

Exercise WITH her! There are lots of ways to exercise with a baby and make it fun for baby too. Do an internet search for exercising with baby and youll find some good exercises you can do. One that i liked was laying on your back with your knees bent and baby sitting with her back against your knees and doing stomach crunches, everytime you come up give the little one a kiss, cracked my little guy up everytime. You can also use the baby as a freeweight, holding her under the arms and doing squats, or laying on your back and lifting her up and down over your face. Theres lots more just have a look!
Good luck!

During your daughter's 2 hour nap up in the day, try exercising for at least a half hour per day before going into your major work activities. That usually works well. Hula hoop, jumping rope, jogging around the house or in place, are several calorie burning activities that can be done in half an hour during the day. After 8:30 p.m., exhausting exercise, wakens the body, and makes it hard to sleep for most of us. I hope the suggestions work out well for you.

hey N.. i have the same problem..... so i sneak in exercise WITH her. for example, if she is on the floor playing, lay down next to her and do some sit ups or crunches to work your belly. lay down on your back and do push ups with her (start with the bebe on your chest and lift her up and down-weeee!)(arms and upper chest). you can also lay her on your shins and pump your legs up and down- at the knee or at the hips. your baby is great weight to pick up. when im cooking or doing dishes, i put my daughter in a swing, and instead of turning it on, i push it manually with my foot (inner thingh workout). when the baby gets a little bigger, she may have fun sitting thru a 15 min workout tape with you. my oldest was in love with my yoga tape when she was 2... she had her own mat and everything. i also used to take her to the park, and do pull-ups on the monkey bars. consider investing in a jogging stroller.

there is so much you can do, without actually setting aside time for it. working out is not defined by a 30 minute, intesive "workout." good luck, i hope some of this stuff is helpful. and remember, your body is not going to be perfect for a long time after you have a child. its not like you are a supermodel for a living. dont get frustrated because you aren't able work out as regularly as you want to. it will eventually get easier. enjoy this infant time while you still have it... it goes by all too quickly.

I use to work out before the kids got up in the morning. I would go the gym around 5am stay an hour and be back in enough time to get the kids ready for school. Do you have someone to watch them while you are exercising or do you belong to a gym with childcare? I have seen exercises you can do with your infant/toddler but have never tried any.
