Ladies,

I am an (Abuelita) Grandmother raising my grandson - John David which I am teaching Spanish, this one will be bi-lingual. I have two other grandchildren but as I mentioned raising this one now that I am retired and just LOVE him to death. Looks just my daughter when she was a baby that I find myself crying at times - Reincarnation. A friend shared, "God gave us parents a SECOND chance, since we unable to raise our own, he let us raise our GRANCHILDREN. That is soooo TRUE !

John David just turned 1 year old on May 29, 2008 and just starting to walk with assistance but I want to make sure to purchase the CORRECT walking shoes for that ARCH support. My daughter checked for Strideride (?) where I used to purchase now my adults children baby shoes when they were babies but is out of business.

Muchas Gracias,
Ms. M.

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies that I received several responses that were very very helpful. Pedipeds, Robeez and Striderite were the shoes recommended.

Glad I was NOT THE ONLY one that used to purchase Striderite shoes.

Muchas Gracias to all of you.
Ms. M.

Dear Abuelita M.,
Sandy's shoes on Anderson Lane is a wonderful place to go - they have Stride Rite as well as other brands. They are very knowledgeable and helpful!

Striderite is the brand name and they are great. It's really important to spend money on good shoes at this age. Their little bones are still developing and providing good arch support is important for their structure development. Striderite has a website http://www.striderite.com/jump.jsp?itemID=0&itemType=...

but I recommend taking your grandson to get his feet measured. One place to NOT buy shoes is Target (or walmart). They have cute shoes cheap but have little or no support.

I have had good luck with Striderite shoes on Ebay also.

Have fun shoe shopping!

Ms. M.,
Your grandson is very lucky to have such a wonderful grandmama so close to him! I love Robeez shoes for first walkers, they are like being barefoot, but protect the feet from harm. You can get them many places, such as Whole Foods or Sandy's shoes on Anderson. I see others have also mentioned Sandy's, I love the store, they are really helpful and carry many different brands for you to try.

God Bless!!
Sherri

Hello M.,
I am a grandmother also and Strideride is where I purchased my childrens shoes when they started walking. Of course when I told my son I was going to get my granddaughter her first pair of walking shoes from there he sort of laughed. But I did see one. It is located in the outlet mall in San Marcos. I have not been to it. So let me know if it is still open or not?

At 1 year, my daughter wore pedipeds and robeez. Robeez because those are like walking barefoot and pedipeds because they are soft soled and recommended by the APMA ("According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, "Allowing the youngster to go barefoot or to wear just socks helps the foot to grow normally and to develop its musculature and strength as well as the grasping action of the toes." Doctors also recommend that children first learning to walk go barefoot or wear soft flexible shoes. Walking around barefoot is not always practical, as little feet need protection from rough surfaces and dirty floors. Soft-soled shoes provide the health benefits of being barefoot, with the added protection of a padded sole.")
