Frequent Bowel Movements

I have an 8 month old baby girl who has had frequent, non-diarrhea bowel movements for a little over a week. She is breast fed and started solids approx 2 months ago. It seems completely unrelated to the start of a new food, I have not changed my diet either. She is having 5-6 a day. I talked to pedi about it and she isn't concerned unless watery. She is getting intermittently red now despite diligent diaper changes with Aquaphor. Any suggestions or feedback? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks Mamas! You all let me relax a little abut this. I decided to not stress out about it, and also added a new food...bananas! I think I over did the banana a bit, and she got constipated for about a 24 hours or so, but now all is good! Ya'll are the best!

My 8 month old breastfed sons has poopy diapers anywhere from 3-7 a day!! It all depends on how hungry he was and how much he ate! And he does like to eat everything! I would not worry but if the Aquaphor isn't helping, try Desitin or another cream.

She may be allergic to something you are feeding her. Allergies manifest in different ways --- some develop hives, or vomit, but others develop a rash in their bottom. May or may not have, but just a thought.

Regarding the bowel movement, it is related to eating solids, in general. Especially right now that your child's digestive system is learning to cope with these new substances. What she passes are things she doesn't need as of the moment. And at this age, they get most of their nutritional needs from your breastmilk still, so they get rid of the other stuff. Anyway, solids at this stage are pretty much practice for right now.

It also depends on the person how many bowels they have. My little boy still has 5-6 a day also, and he is 1. But then again, he used to go even more frequently when he was younger. Yur ped was right to say that as long as it's not watery, or even that there is no blood in the stool, you don't need to be concerned.

Ooh, and maybe, don't use Aquaphor, since that is mainly useful for dry skin --- and not only will it slough off the outer layer of skin, it will keep the moisture that's already there flush with her skin --- thus aggravating the redness. Desitin original and A&D are better at protecting and healing your child's skin from the rash.

I've heard that a very healthy person will have one bm for each time they eat. It's just not common in the western dirt b/c of what we eat. Maybe it's a sign that your baby is very healthy.

If the doctor isn't worried you should not worry.

Use the Desitin in the purple box. It stays on longer and has a higher % of zinc than other ointments. It was the only thing that helped my son when he had the poop virus a few weeks ago.

Same issue here. When we start to see a diaper rash from it this is what we do. As crazy as it sounds, it works. Pedi after pedi has suggested it and the pharmacies will even compound it fo you. But no need to spend the xtra cash. Just do this:

1. cotton ball on plain old maalox (the one with simethicone in it).
2. On top of that, put on A&D.
3. Then, smear on desitin. Make sure you make a nice paste on her bottom with all of this. yOu'll get the hang of how much of each pretty fast.

The simethicone nuetralizes the acid, the A&D soothes the rash and the desitin drys it all up. WARNING: Be sure that her bottom is extra dry before you start. We were using aquaphor for a while but not quite getting our son dry enough and all the aquaphor did was sealin that wetness on his little bottom! The mix I've given you will have her bottom super soft and comfy within 24 hours. But keep it up until it's pretty much healed over.

I was going to also susggest it might be teething. I know alot of people out there say that teething doesn't cause these things, but when my daughter cut teeth she always had borderline diarrhea, fever, and rash. Not always at the same time..but one or other usually. And now my son who is 6 1/2 months just cut both his bottom teeth 3 days apart and it was rather uneventful. Other than being a little whiney he doesn't seemed bothered by cutting new teeth! So who knows. But don't count that out!

Hi! It sounds quite healthy to me that she is having several BM's a day. Technically if our systems are functioning optimally we would have a BM after every time we eat. However, if it smells much worse than normal (really rank) then it might be a virus or something.

For the diaper rash I always used cornstarch. It is cheap and works everytime quicker than any ointment I have tried.

She's the right age and my 1st thought is teething. I just called our pediatrician's office to ask the nurse if it was possible, she said yes it's common but she said there's also a virus going around and they've seen a lot of kids in the past two weeks. She said if it's foul smelling it's more likely to be this virus and if not to also let them know if it goes on for more than 10 days or dehydration seems to be setting in because they want to run tests if it persists. As far as the rash you probably need to treat it with a true diaper rash cream with zinc in it, Aquaphor is a protectant and doesn't help heal it quickly even though it helps prevent the moisture from sitting on her bottom. If she seems to be really irritated use wet papertowels or washcloths instead of wipes because the can make it hurt even more.

My son's poopy diaper count goes up when he's teething. It's common for him to have 6 or 7 a day during teething times. We had good results with Aquaphor. But we started rotating between it and Original Desitin and that seemed to work even better. My son rarely gets diaper rash unless he's had several poopy diapers in one day, and the Aquaphor/Desitin combination clears it up by the next day!

Both of my kids had a big increase in the number of dirty diapers/day when they were teething. They never got cranky or febrile, never needed tylenol or Orajel - they just had loose stools.

I'd trust your pediatrician unless it continues for another week to 10 days.

Her intestines may be getting accustomed to different foods, different pH levels of new food, or she may just have a little virus that is running its course.

Good luck! I'd stick with the Pediatrician for now.
