Frustrated with Open Enrollment

Around Christmastime, I asked the mamas your advice about transferring my son out of a regimented Direct Instruction charter school kindergarten mid year, and most said go for it! We transferred him out after winter break and back to his previous Montessori school, and he is doing GREAT! He is much happier, more engaged, and actually better behaved! Because he has a late summer birthday, we were going to try kindergarten again next year at our neighborhood school where my daughter had a great school experience. However, this school...which is actually the closest elementary school to us...is OUTSIDE of our school district, which means we have to open enroll. Open enrollment in WI was extended this year until April 30, so we don't know whether he got in yet or not, but the after school child care meeting is TODAY! So we have to pay our fees and turn in all our personal information forms...and we don't even know if he will be going there next year. When I contacted the district, they said that parents were to be notified by JUNE 8! That's AFTER the school year ends! So if he didn't get in, and we have to do some last minute scrambling, we'll have to do it when the District offices are just about closed. Does this make sense to anyone else? I know I need to have patience, but it's hard when its a decision that significantly impacts your child...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks mamas and papas for letting me vent and for empathizing with me! I know I just need to be patient, but at least posting about it made me feel like I was at least doing SOMEthing. The DPI website also gives the June 8 date, so I guess it is what it is. Once he's in, he's in for all of elementary school, and I'm optimistic because it's just another public school (versus a charter school), so hopefully demand will be low and there'll be plenty of room for him, right? Keep your fingers crossed for us...

Doesn't matter if it makes sense - it is what it is.

Sorry.

Sounds like the Seattle school district.... Where the motto is : we can make this harder! Nearly every year enrollment changes. My favorite year was the pure lottery system. My neighbor had 3 elementary kids in 3 schools, over 40 minutes away from each other, all with the same start time, and no bussing. She LITERALLY created a form and requested a time machine from the district office. Gotta love Sue. Then there was the year 1st graders were supposed to ride city busses, and the year... You get my drift. And people wonder why homeschooling is becoming so popular.

Welcome to public school, where you are a number to them, and their job isn't to serve you or your child. It's a rude shock after private school, I can tell you from experience! :(

I agree with Dad's comment below - it is what it is. Not much you can do about it but wait and see. Good luck...

How frustrating! Try to see if you can find any answers on the DPI website: http://dpi.wi.gov/

Message me if you don't get anywhere. I know someone who works there and I'd be happy to call.

It doesn't make any sense to me. If the school year is over then you won't be able to enroll him anywhere else until probably August. That's cutting it a bit close if you ask me. I hate it when things like this are up in the air!

Frustrating. I hope you get in. I am so happy he is doing so well. Thanks for updating as I do remember reading about it. Once he gets in, is he in or does he have to open enroll every year?
