I am an amateur gardener looking for help with timing planting in my area. Does anyone know of a website that will send you a weekly email with "what to do" based on my zip code or other? I have books and magazines on gardening, but never seem to have time to keep it straight.
Friends School of Minnesota has a great plant sale and newspaper like catalog each year with plants that do well in our area.

Home Depot has a regional garden club/newsletter. It's free, and the info you get is based on your zip code and zone. You get emails from them periodically, and you can login for zone specific info at any time. I think you can find the link on their main website--it's been awhile since I signed up, so I can't remember exactly where it is. Happy planting!!

I am by no means an expert but I put in direct sow seeds in around early-mid May last year.
This weekend I plan to start some seeds in the house - pumpkin, eggplant, zuchinni and peppers. I'll put those seedlings in around the same time as the direct sow.

You could try the University of MN Agriculture website or the one through the MN Arboretum. The Arboretum has a wonderful sale every May as well - often coinsiding with Mother's Day. The Friends (mentioned earlier)one is great too. I've never had a lot of luck with seeds - buy a lot of seedlings at the nurseries myself. If you're going to do flower gardening invest in the perennials - once they're in you won't have to do much until you need to divide them (usually 3 yrs later). The MPLS farmer's market is a GREAT place to shop plants. Not as cheap as it used to be but FUN! And fabulous variety of flowers, veggies, herbs, shurbs, you name it.
The most important rule is this: no matter how tempting it is: don't plant it in the ground until the frost free date - around Mother's Day.
The bottom line is gardening is FUN - don't be intimidated - if the bunnies eat all your lettuce there's always more at the store...

I'm just starting a garden for the first time this year too. I bought the book Month by Month Gardening in Minnesota and it has been very helpful. I haven't found any websites, but I will check back to your request to see if anyone else has ideas. The book I bought is at Borders and Barnes and Noble, and I'm sure other bookstores too.
