My 5 week old has severe gas pains, I give her Milicon, but sometimes it is still not enough to ease her pains. She screams a horrible blood curddling scream, then she passes it then shes ok, for a moment until another pain comes along. I have tried warm rags & heating pad, no success.

What can I do next?

My son had lots of gas problems at around 7 wks as well as acid reflux. I heard Gripe water works but I could never find it, I also tried milicon which did not work so I tried little tummies gas drops and it worked wonders also I changed his formula to Enfamil GentleEase for gassy, colicky babies and I even changed his bottles to Dr Browns which helped tremendously. I ended up w/soy formula after he stopped being so gassy for his acid reflux.

Good Luck and this shall pass.

I dealt with same issues with my now 9 month old around 5 weeks old too! If breastfeeding, cut all dairy out of your diet. If using formula, talk to your pediatrician about Lactose-free formula, or Enfamil Nutramagin. My daughter is still on nutramagin and will be till her 1st birthday. It is pretty expensive, but within 2 days her ecezma cleared up, skin was softer, stopped being fussy at the bottle and ate much better, and of course less/no gas! Whatever you do, do it for am inimum of 2 weeks to see results...it takes that long for dairy to leave our systems. Don't be suprised if you switch formulas and she has bad poops for 1-2 weeks...it's a transition thing! GOOD LUCK!

I have to agree with what Kay said. The chances are good that it's a soothing issue and the Happiest Baby techniques that she can teach you are truly amazing! However, I wouldn't rule out that it could be some degree of reflux. You might want to check with your pediactrician.

My father in law told me to disolve a peppermint in a baby bottle of water, I used a 4 once bottle. Something about the peppermint soothing there stomach. I tried it, It worked!! I even asked her doctor and he told me it was safe, and worked just as well as Malcon Drops or any other product. Its cheeper and they have really great smelling breath afterwards. Hope this helps. Also if you are breast feeding it can have something to do with what you eat, a friend of mine had that trouble and she had to adjust her diet. Hope this helps!

We had the same problem at 8 weeks. The culprit was milk protene not just lactose. So if the other suggestions don't work, go back to your doctor. In our case our son needed a alimentem formula from simalc (sp). D.

If you're nursing, cut milk out of your diet. If you're using formula, try a lactose free one. Dairy is a common culprit for tummy problems.

I had similar challenges with my little one at this age..after cutting dairy out of my diet (while breastfeeding) it did not seem to change too much...I then heard about this amazing stuff called "Gripe Water" It is made by Baby Bliss...not sure where you can find it where you are...but most specialty baby store have it, or you can order it online.
Best of luck you you!!! I have been there and it is no fun to watch your little angel suffer with this.

L., I wish I had known some of this information when we struggled with having a gasy baby. In additon to the formula change and baby massaging techniques we found a Homeopathic pill that worked wonders. I can't remember the exact name but I think it was Dr.Carver's something (in a little pink/white bottle). Any Homeopathic store could help. Good luck. L. M.

My son had the same issue at that age. We finally landed on a formula that was lactose free and it helped him. If you are breastfeeding, I woudl say you probably need to change your diet. Otherwise, both Similac and Enfimil make lactose free formulas that work. My son drank both, but I know sometimes they tollerate one brand more than the other. I feel your pain...it was so hard to see my son go through what he did. It does get better I promise!

we have had the same problem with our 12 week old daughter. We have tried Gripewater, Mylicon, Gerber Gas Drops, warm washcloths, etc. I even tried eating the most bland foods. Sometimes those worked but often times they did not. One thing that has consistantly worked is infant massage. It does not eliminate gas but it helps quickly get rid of it. Place pressure on your babies tummy and move in a clockwise motion. Babies have a gas pocket on their lower left side of the abdomen. If you apply a little more pressure there it helps. We do this while our daughter is propped up on a pillow tilted to her left side. We also bend our daughter's legs up to her abdomen and then slowly stretch them out. Do this several times and the gas is quickly released. I will say that as her GI tract is further developing we are have less and less gassy moments.

Hope that helps!

I think our little ones are the same age... my little girl was born October 5th... and my daughter has the same gassy tummy issues. Is your baby still dealing with this? We learned an exercise that really helps Emma when her tiny tummy is bothering her. We lay her on her back, and holding her ankles, gently push her knees up to her chest and then stretch them back out... 3 times in the center, and then one time on each side. It seems to really help relieve her gas, and she thinks its funny, too! She laughs the whole time we're "playing" with her legs. I hope this helps. I know its hard to see your sweet baby in so much discomfort. Good Luck!

My daughter had horrible stomach pains from gas, and my sister in law told us about the peppermint idea. You could almost see the relief in my daughter's face when it took affect. I ended up getting pepperment flavored extract and would put a couple of drops with a tiny bit of sugar (it's a strong taste) in her bottle. It worked so good for her. I asked her pediatrician about it and he said it was fine. Said it was an old wives tale, but if it worked for her, then by all means, go for it!

I had the same problem with my girl at that age, which means she could be part colicie. Then I was able to give her paragoric (which cannot be prescribed any longer). My son now who is 3 months old also goes through similar pain. Thankfully not as severe. Our Pediatrician recommend the milicon drops, which does not work. They are useless. He said to try mylanta give about 1.2ml. That helps when he has spit up and with gas pain (It eases his stomach discomfort). I nurse at night and bottle feed during day care hours. We have been using Enfamil Gentle Ease (for babies who are fussy and have a lot of gas). It seems to be easier on his stomach than the breast milk. In fact he can be bottle fed in his infant carrier and not even burp right away. We really love that formula. Your baby may react the same way..maybe your baby is a little lactose intolerant.

L., i had the same problem with my daughter when she was a baby...her colic was so terrible. thank god my mother was there to help me or i dont know what i would have done. we would pass her off to each other every night just to get a little sleep between us. then i met someone on the street and we started talking about alley. she said to go to an herbal store and ask for "colic" by natures sunshine. i bought a bottle (about 10 or 12 bucks) and tried it on alley. omg, it worked. it was the best stuff. we were finally able to sleep through the night. and the good news, it is all natural, no alcohol in it, and no side effects. so, you should keep that in mind in case none of these other things help. good luck

L.,

the gas issue is why people used to sleep babies on the tummy for years, because the gentle pressure of sleeping on the stomache helped them to rest better. However today we can't do that because we know it causes a serious increase in potential for SIDS. Now they know that babies really have limited calming skills that are exacerbated by things like sound, gas, cold etc and they find that to sleep on the back we need to maintain that same constant pressure as on the stomach and prevent the startle reflex from waking them hourly. That is why Dr Karp recommends swaddling for the first 3 months at least
Try reading Dr karps book, The Happiest Baby on the Block. I teach a class in it and have the dvd. I will be happy to help you with the techniques if you like. I have helped many new parents to calm and soothe their babies and actually get some sleep at night as well.
Good Luck,
