My son was recently diagnosed with GERD, does anyone know what I can do to make feeding him easier? He is on medications, but he struggles eating still.

What can I do next?

T.---How old is he? Are you breastfeeding? If so, his symptoms could caused by what you may be eating. I am just beginning to study intestinal disorders in my wellness classes, but I know that diet has a huge effect on this, ro any disorder.

Take meds just deals with symptoms. I cannot believe the number of people on this website who share that their babies on on prevacid type medicines. This is a med that has never been studied on how it affects children. It is actually quite alarming. If these meds are used for a long period of time, they can have an impact on digestion and proper absorption of nutrients, causing a viscous cycle of the body not being able to heal itself and needing more meds.

If you would like, I could help do some research on how to heal your son's digestive system so that drugs are not needed. Until then, make sure your diet consists primarily of fruits, veggies, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. Minimize the use of animal proteins, and this includes cows milk, especially when nursing. Cows milk is highly allergenic, however, it is so subtle as an allergen, it is not looked at as the culprit. Go to www.strongbones.org to learn more on that subject. Animal proteins should be organic. Organic meats have better nutrition and far fewer negative addtitives in them.

I can check with Dr. Popper, Naturopath, PhD in Nutrition, about what is recommended for formulas if that is his primary source of food. I also highly recommend a high quality whole food supplement that can help heal and balance the immune system. I know of one that has numerous independent studies to show that it improves the health of every cell in the body. It is made of 17 different fruits, veggies and the bran of 2 grains.

I know I probably have been of little help for now, but I hope to provoke some thought on the use of these meds for babies. Please understand that I am not implying that you've done anything wrong. The way our food is grown these days makes it much less nutritious than it used to be. This, in turn, is likely the cause for many of the health disorders people are experiencing today, and at younger and younger ages. GERD can definitely be helped with the proper diet. I beg you to consider that possibility.

Good luck! In health, D. ###-###-####

HI,

From a homeopathic perspective, GERD is a symptom and not a diagnosis. All the medicine in the world won't fix the problem - but rather will mask the cause. Often it is believed that supressing the stomach acid fixes the issue - truly it only makes it worse. You need to get him on a probiotic and be religious about giving it to him. Without the appropriate bacteria to help digest his food and move it along the exit route, his tummy will never be right... I always order my stuff from Northstar Nutritionals and Real Advantage. Ultimate Digestive Support is what I take - I also was dx'ed with GERD. Haven't taken anything for it other than this and it hasn't bothered me in years!! Because I fixed the problem! Here is a link for info. Good luck!! https://www.web-purchases.com/655SENZ/WRHBK5D2/landing.html

Hi T.,
My son was also recently diagnosed with this, which has also eroded his esphogas. I don't know how old your son is but here are some tips our pediatric gastroenterologist gave me: No food close to bed time, before 7:00 pm if possible. Limit fatty, fried, or acidic foods or drinks. Check the juice you have, many contain asorbic acid and especially avoid anything citrus. Eat smaller meals more often. Raise the head of bed up some. I hope this helps for you.

Take care,
J.

Hi T.,

My son had this issue until he was about 1. He spit up constantly. As stated previously, keeping him sitting up for about 30-40 minutes after eating helped. Also, try to feed her smaller meals more frequently. In his case, he was premature and seemed to outgrow the problem.

I don't remember what it's called but there is a little flap at the bottom of the esophagus and sometimes it is not working properly or developed properly and will cause GERD-like symptoms.

Good luck! I know what a pain this can be.

For myself, I need to stay vertical several hours after I eat. The Dr. told me 4 hours and said even water was a no-no, but I have only managed 2. I definitely notice a difference if I don't. Spicy foods don't bother me, but breads and fatty foods that sit in the stomach a long time do.
