Hi everyone,
I just found out I have gestational diabetes. I am 28 weeks, with my 2nd child. It was a complete surprise since I don't have any of the symptoms or risks other than being 1/2 hispanic. Any good suggestions for getting through 2 more months? (diet, exercise, support groups, expectations,etc...)I haven't gotten counseling yet(soon). thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi, I am a diabetes educator and hope that you have an appt soon to see an Registered Dietitian and nurse. They will give you a specific meal plan and lots of good advice. In the meantime, cut out juice and all sweetened beverages. Eat small frequent feedings (6/day) and .... limit your rice to one measuring cupful per meal!
good luck! I have no idea where you are but you can make an appt at our office by calling ###-###-#### in Baltimore, MD.

I too got gestational diabetes and was able to reduce my sugars by walking after every meal, increasing water, taking out all fruit juices, always eat protein w/ a carb or fruit...and keeping my blood sugar testing going ALL the TIME....best of luck to you, I was able to keep my sugars in check for a while, but frankly should have kept taking my sugars well after they "let me go" because I think they went up later and I started getting UTI's and stuff...

I am a 38 year old mother of 3 and I had gestational w/my two youngest (both boys) who are now 6 and 7 ...

The diet is fairly easy to follow, peanut butter toast, yogurt, veggies, controlled protein portions ... etc. Just no refined sugars, whole dairies or sweets.

As far as exercise, walking is wonderful or swimming.

I had gestational diabetes with my daughter, also no risks other than that my father has type 2. I had a pretty easy time dealing with it and once I started testing almost never had it spike above the level they wanted it below. The meal plan they had me on was totally easy to stick to--I walked to the salad bar down the street from my office almost every day and it worked like a charm. But also, when I had the initial diabetes test they found I also had anemia, and there is a relationship between these two. Check with your doctor and see if they think you should take iron supplements, and of course it wouldn't hurt to add iron rich foods to your diet. When I started taking the supplement I felt SO much better and not as tired all the time. Good luck!
