Getting Pregnant Following Miscarriage

Hi everyone- I am wondering if anyone can share their experiences about getting pregnant following a miscarriage. We lost our baby in late Dec- at 7.5 weeks. I am now trying to conceive again- and am feeling a little anxious. Mostly because my OBGYN did no hormonal testing following the MC. Is this normal? I had the MC naturally and the doc in the ER examined me and said that everything looked fine. I got my period one month later and it has been fairly regular- but extra heavy and clotty. I have trouble conceiving on my own- so I am on Clomid. With my daughter I got pregnant the first month on Clomid, after over a year of trying. With the baby we lost- it happened the same way- first month. I'm now on my 3rd Clomid cycle. I know that miscarriages are much more common than most people realize- but I think I am feeling like my doctors are very relaxed about the whole situation. I was expecting to be monitored a bit. Is the fact that my period returned the only sign needed to be reassured that all is working normally? Any experiences you can share are welcome. Thanks.

What can I do next?

I've had two miscarriages, one before my 3-year-old girl and one after. Yes, everything is working normally and good luck. Miscarriages are very, very common. I guess we do expect a little special attention when we go through it. They just seem relaxed, because it's really no big deal. Although for us, it's a loss.

This happened to me too. My first pregnancy ended in miscarriage at 8 weeks.. I needed a D&C for mine as they did an ultrasound and saw no heartbeat. We waited a little longer than the standard time they tell you because we were so upset. After 6 months we tried again and got pregnant right away with our son. My doctors seemed nonchalant about it too. I asked them about it and they said they don't worry until it's been 3 miscarriages in a row (which freaked me out at the thought of it). They did nothing until I was pregnant again. At the very beginning of the pregnancy they did blood tests on me every other day to make sure my levels were going up. They did this till the baby was big enough to do an ultrasound (around 6 or 7 weeks). Once they saw the baby was the right size, had a heartbeat and everything else looked normal they got me on the monthly check up schedule and it calmed down. Good luck this time around.

My mother had several miscarriages before I was conceived, and after I was born she had my brother and no more trouble. ^_^ Both of us were very healthy, easy pregnancies. Even if you have a little trouble, don't give up hope. Miscarriages are your body's way of saying that something was wrong with that fetus, and very natural. If you have another, you might wish to discuss a possible cause with your doctor, but for now, don't stress about it.

I had a miscarriage with my first pregnancy at 4 weeks and 2 days - I probably would have never know I was pregnant if I hadn't had a pap!! I had one normal period and then got pregnant. It DOES seem more common that most people realize and once you have been there/done that, you realize that there are alot of other families who have gone through the same thing. I think as long as the m/c was normal (no D&C, not too terribly far along, etc) that they would not monitor you.

Good luck and sending you lots of baby dust!

I'm sorry for your loss...

My advice is to relax, and even stop the Clomid. I know that you want a baby as soon as possible, but you need to give your body and your heart time to heal. I had my MC in Oct. 2005 at 11wks. My body returned to normal. By Feb. 2006 I was surprisingly pregnant again. Very stressed, but was able to carry the baby to term.

I have a friend that was using Clomid in Mar 2009, had a miscarriage. Decided it was a sign and to take a break, and by Nov. 2009 was pregnant on her own.

Hi T.,
I am so sorry to hear of your miscarriage. I also lost my baby in December; I was 12 weeks pregnant and went for a routine ultrasound and the tech discovered that the baby had died at 8w5d and had no heartbeat. Since I didn't miscarry naturally, I had a d&c on January 4. My doctor advised waiting 2 cycles to try again; we waited 3 but I began BBT charting right away. My cycles changed after the m/c. They used to be 31 days, with ovulation on day 20. Now they are 26-27 days, with ovulation on day 12! I am so glad I charted because when we tried to get pregnant in April, I knew exactly when I ovulated and we were able to conceive. I am now 6 weeks and going for an u/s tomorrow to see the baby and hopefully a heartbeat.

My doctor did not monitor me after the d&c except for a 2-week post op checkup (which was really just a chat about when it was okay to try again). However, he and I agreed that when I got pregnant again, I'd be monitored more closely than other moms. So he did bloodwork at my first visit to check my hcg levels, and he'll see me more frequently to do that if he feels there's anything to be concerned about. He's also sending me for the u/s that I mentioned.

If you do not use BBT charting, you should definitely think about it! Get a book called Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler (www.tcoyf.com)--it's really helpful! You may not need the Clomid after all.

Having a miscarriage is such a terrible thing and it really blindsides you. I wish you the very best and I hope everything goes well for you.
