Getting Smell Out

Yesterday my son caught an awful stomach bug and vomited all over the house before making it to the bathroom. We have cleaned and cleaned and I washed everything in the washer that I could, cleaned with Oxyclean and sprayed Febreeze but I cannot get the smell out of my chair and area rug. It is driving me crazy my whole living room smells like vomit! Has anyone had any luck with anything getting the smell out?

What can I do next?

Hi Christine,
Call a professional! You don't want to deal with it any more - and you don't want to drive it deeper into the carpet by adding stuff on top. You have to flush it out and pros have better cleaning enzymes than we can buy.
In Grand Rapids, call the BISSELL Big Green Cleaning Team.
Good Luck!

Christine,

Yes I get a product called ODO-BAN from Sams Club. A gallon of concentrate plus spray bottle of product already mixed up is about $10.00. This stuff is great!

One of my boys threw up in my van in the middle of summer all over his carseat and the van seat, I couldn't get the smell out, plus every time it sat out in the hot sun all closed up, then I would open the door and and that smell would just hit me, ewwwww, it was soooo bad! The ODO-BAN took it right out. The trick is it needs to sit on the stinky area and stay damp for at least 10 min. thats it.

It has a very nice fresh smell too. I have used it on my carpet and upholstery I have also used it in the washing machine (in the fabric softener dispenser) and have never had a problem with anything discoloring. It is also an anti-bacterial, and anti-viral too so it kills germs as well.

I've used vinegar on odors before and it works. If vinegar doesn't do the job, try Odo-Ban.

You may have to steam clean. Rent a steamcleaner and use some dawn dish soap or Awesome and clean away.

If you can find some URINE GONE spray you should be good. I don't know if Meijer's carries it. Otherwise go online and you should be able to find some someplace. It's supposed to be good for vomit too.

We've been using the Febreeze air filter, $19 (electric pack). It seems like it's doing a good job getting the pet smell out of our place.

Bankingsoda sprinkle it on it let it sit and vacumn it off. Also you can use vinagar and water. Good luck!!! I do know Bleach and water gets all odors out too but with it being an area rug and a chair I wouldn't want the color to be changed from the bleach stick with the banking soda. Oh ya open your windows and air the house get the bug out.

Vinegar should work, however, if the vomit got into the fabric deeper than you can get to with a rag (like soaked in really deep into the cushion) you'll probably have to steam clean it.

Vinegar gets rid of smells really well though. My husband has a habit of leaving wet things in the garage and then they smell to high heaven when he brings them in to be washed. I just throw them in the washer with a little vinegar and the smell is gone.

Good luck!

I had an incident with my dog who decided to eat a can of tuna on our ottoman. I tried everything that you have and the only thing that really worked was baking soda. Clean the area with the oxiclean and while it is still wet sprinkle a good amount of baking soda over it. Once the baking soda dries vacummn it. I had to repeat it a couple of times but it really seemed to work. Good luck!

Pet enzyme cleaner does wonders - you can buy it at any pet specialty store and maybe Target/Walmart. It works on nearly everything that normal washing does not. Good luck!

Hi-
Hope the little guy is better.
A really good product that might help is Basic G from Shaklee. It is a biodegradable deodorizer/cleaner/disinfectant all in one. If your area rug is washable, throw it in the tub and let it soak through for a while. Vinegar and baking soda might help, too. For the cushion, you might have to get a steam cleaner and this is where the Basic G would be great- just use a tiny amount in the steamer. If you don't know where to get Shaklee products, message me back and I will help you.
Please be aware that 'air fresheners' are among the most unhealthy products- you are putting toxic chemicals into the air that your family is breathing. A much better air freshener is the reeds in a jar of essential oils or a non-toxic spritzer made from natural, not artificial ingredients.
Good luck,
M.

First of all I hope your son is better, we have all been there, second it's good you can still smell this because there are probally still bacteria around. You can pick this up at Sams Club, OdoBan, kills 99.99% of germs, not expensive, comes in gallon concentrate. Best of luck to you.

Hi Christine,
I use Simple Solution Cat Stain & Odor Remover. It's all natural has worked for me on a variety of things both cat and human. The trick is letting it get to the whole of the stain, so if you're working on a cushion, you might have to give a couple of applications to get all the way down. The smells disappear as it drys and leaves a pleasant scent behind.

I believe I bought it at Meijer.

Good Luck!

Hi Christine,

I use a cleaner from Wal-Mart called Kids & Pets. I have used it for diarrhea stains and smell on carpet as well as pet accidents. I have also used it on my furniture when my little guy peed on it and it takes the smell right out. I believe Wal-Mart and maybe Target are the only places to get it.

I know it's snowy out but can you put the things outside for a few hours? I find Lysol spray helpful sometimes as well, though some might worry about the chemicals. The smell would upset me more than the chemicals at this point!

I used baking soda and let it soak up the odors and then vacuumed them up. It was inexpensive and worth a try. It took a couple times, but it did work on the carpet.

Hi Christine,
My nephew puked on my leather couch....so I feel your pain. I tried everything and could not get rid of the odor, until a friend of mine told me to try this method: wash the area with vinegar/water mixed 50/50 (and I really let it get soaked in there), then cover the piece of furniture with wadded up newspaper (highly absorbant), then cover the whole couch (chair, whatever) with plastic (like a tarp or shower curtain) and seal it as well as possible. Then I let it stay that way for 3 days. Unwrapped it, threw away the newspaper, and the puke smell was gone! My couch smelled a bit like a pickle for a week or so, but that was a big improvement over the vomit smell! ;o) Best of luck to you!

Beware that all "pet" odor removers are not the same. One that I know for a fact works (because I've used it for YEARS) is Nature's Miracle. The best thing is it has a money-back guarantee. You can buy it by the gallon or in spray bottles at any pet store.

Another thing I love about it is that it's not just for pet stains. It works on vomit, mattress stains, blood...basically any stain originating from humans or animals. You can use it on laundry, furniture, carpet, etc. I even washed an entire floor with it...letting it soak into the cracks between tiles, when cleaning a house after 10 cats moved out. That place had stunk to high heaven for YEARS...there was cat barf, diarrhea and pee everywhere. Nature's Miracle got rid of it all!

It's an enzyme, so it eats the *source* of the stain; it doesn't mask it with a scent. I've heard Bac-Out works well too, but I haven't used it personally.
