Giving Baby Table Foods

I am trying to transition my 10 month old son to some more table foods. I am kind of stuck in a rut with the usual pureed food (stage 3 foods) that I know he'll like and are easy. I would love it if I could cook foods for the family that would be healthy and okay for him to eat too. What would you suggest giving to a 10 month old? Do you have any tips for healthy cooking for children and your family? Do you have a favorite baby/kids cookbook you can recommend? Any suggestions or advice on this is more than welcome. I really have very little experience planning and preparing meals and feel a little overwhelmed. Also, does it really matter if he's still eating pureed food if he likes it? When do babies need to switch to table foods if they still seem satisfied with baby food? Thanks for your time!

So What Happened?

It sounds like he can be eating way more than I realized. I've been trying to be a little more relaxed about it and just start giving him what I'm eating when it's appropriate and also using some convenience foods (canned food or gerber graduates). He seems to like everything okay but sometimes has a hard time swallowing. Each time gets a little bit easier though. Thanks for all the great suggestions! Now I'm starting to have fun giving him different foods! (:

I always feed our son what we ate, within reason. Small children can eat pureed food but soon or later have to get switched to some solid foods. I found it easier to not puree his food but mash it or cut it up at the table and avoid foods that were just to hard to for him to eat. You have to also be very careful not to over season any foods your son will be eating.
I really would not get into making a lot of different meals just for your son. If you are that worried stay with stage 3 foods for a while long till you feel more comfortable.
At 10 months old he can eat veggie, fruits, and some meats just as you do. Finger foods like cooked carrots, hot dogs, green beans, chunks of melon are lots of fun for them. Also check out websites for fun ideas but don't change your whole life.

my older daughter was on table foods around 10 months. we fed her smaller pieces of whatever we were having. she didn't have any teeth (until after a year. ugh.), so we just had to make sure she didn't have any raw veggies because she couldn't chew them. veggies were always cooked and soft, cut into tiny pieces. any meat is fine, as long as it's not tough and it's tiny pieces they can grind/mash and swallow. pasta is always a good one. rice. i gave my daughter a half slice of wheat bread with a little butter every once in a while with a meal. i cut the half slice into 2 little squares and she liked being able to hold it. my husband is hispanic and we had many dishes with different seasonings and spices. my daughter ate anything. i think once they realize what all they're missing out on, they forget about the stage 3 foods! :) good luck. don't stress, and don't worry if you still want to give him stage 3 foods. i still fed my daughter those when we were out...it was much easier and we didn't have to spend time finding something she could eat while she cried because she was hungry (though we did make that mistake once!).

My son was eating all table foods by 10 months. No peanuts and no spicy food.Make sure its small enough that he/she can easily chew it and swallow it..

We never used stage 3 foods, we went from stage 2 to the gerber graduates and some soft table foods. These were really handy because you could still toss them in the diaper bag and always have food, but it was a good transtion into table food.

Also, what we still use for him (he's almost 2) is canned veggies. They're soft enough and if I don't have anything fresh to cook up or are headed out, you can pop the lid and serve them right up. You'll probably have to cut them for your 10 month old though. Fruit cups are another easy to store, use in a pinch item to have on hand. String cheese, applesauce, and yogurt are all good too.

Offer him whatever you're eating (that he could reasonably chew/mash and swallow) and you may be surprised to find that he's happy to ditch stage 3 for something new.

Our dr. said anything we were eating was fine except for eggs, seafood and nuts. Our daughter is 9 mo. I have tried giving her little bits of table food, but she mostly squishes them in her hands and pockets them in her mouth before spitting them out. I don't think she likes the texture yet, but we'll keep trying a little bit everyday. Good luck!
