No one told me about this when I had my daughter and I could have cried every time I had to go to the bathroom after I had her!! I ended up buying stool softners that are veggie based which helped greatly!!

I was way more prepared with my son and I bought a bottle of Metamusil tablets but you have to take like 6 at a time which was a pain and they didn't seem to help much so I went back to the stool softner. I can't think of any brands off the top of my head but I know walmart makes a cheaper version of a name brand one.

Good luck!

Stool softeners (colace -but buy a store brand called Docusate Sodium because Colace brand is ridiculously expensive) and TONS of water. Also make sure you're getting some exercise -at least walking and taking in a lot of water (not soft drinks). Since you say there was a lot of blood in the toilet, I would call my doctor just to be sure and explain what is going on. Unfortunately I have some experience with this, and you could have hemorrhoids, a fissure or polyps. It's always better to be safe than sorry! Again -I cannot stress water enough. An idiot doctor told me years ago to take lots of metamucil but he didn't tell me how important drinking about a gallon of water a day is when you're doubling up on fiber. If you don't, the fiber actually makes your stools bigger! I finally found all of this out and it was life-changing!

Since I prefer natural/organic products whenever possible, I use a product called Oil Smart 3-6-9. It is a blend of omega oils (an added benefit) which is in capsule form. You take 3, initially and then lower to 1 or 2, depending on your needs.
I have 1-2 bowel movements daily, like clockwork.
BTW, I also increased my water intake, which helps a LOT. Try to limit all caffeinated drinks, as they dehydrate you.
These measures should help.

That was the WORST part for me after delivery. The problem is that the pain killers constipate and it's really hard to get regular. I would suggest Benefiber, low dairy, high water and high fiberous foods. But for a few weeks I would do two doses of Benefiber per day (powder). It is absolutely tasteless when mixed in a drink. Stay on top of it, I had to go to Urgent Care because I was so "stopped up."

Hope this helps!

Stress burns up magnesium which makes us constipated. take 800 to 1200 of a good magnesium blend until you are going regularly...then back off to 400 or so (depending on the bowels) be sure to take at bedtime. good for sleep, muscles, et al.

K.,try a cup of hot tea...I have had 4 kids and though I am not a tea drinker,I tried this and it works wonderfully. I use regular tea,and added just enough sugar to take away bitterness but not sweeten...best of luck!

You need to drink plenty of water, also you might need to take a stool softner, maybe some MO or Corectal. If that dosen't work then you need to consult your OB doctor. Congraulations to you and your first born!!!

Hi K.,

Fiber is extremely important and also a LOT of water for you to go to the bathroom regularly. You should be going 3 times a day if you are eating three meals a day (which you should be if you are breastfeeding).. Is the blood bright red or brownish? That can tell you a lot as well...

Feel free to get in touch with me privately as well if this doesn't resolve soon. It's amazing what can go right if you simply have the first piece of the puzzle!

God bless,

M.
