Gross Motor Delay and Celiac Sprue

Does anyone know if there is a correlation between Celiac Sprue and Gross motor delay? My daughter did not walk until she was 22 months old and I am trying to find out why. My husband and his family have Celiac Sprue so the likelihood of our daughter having the disease is likely. She is right on in all other areas (fine motor, speech, ect). She is only in the 5% for weight. She is doing great for a child that has only been walking for two months. She does not have any other medical problems. She is in a play group, church, reading group, and I take her to the local play areas. She has not been on a gluten free diet, but I am thinking of trying it. Any ideas are greatly appreciated

Hi H.. I'm not sure about the gross motor delay, but the fact that your daughter is in the 5% for weight may be an indicator of celiac. As I'm sure you know there are malabsorption issues that go along with it, so a gluten free diet may help her get the nutrients she needs and put on a few pounds. My BIL was recently diagnosed. This is a guy who was skinny as a rail and could not gain weight. The diet made all of the difference. He feels better and looks healthy. Good luck!

Hi H.,
I myself suffer from celiac disease. I was't diagnosed until about 4 yrs ago. I don't know everything about it yet, but I do know that it can interfere with gross motor delay, and many more things. Some of the most common symptoms are stomach problems, rashes, depression and anxiety, and with me infertility, until I found out I had it, and changed my diet. Does your daughter seem to be suffering from any of these other symptoms? One thing you may find out real quick, is that most doctors don't like to test for this disease, because it's 'not common' so you may have to push for her to get tested. I wonder if my baby has it, because i had to remain on a gluten free diet during my pregnancy, and when i tried introducing him to wheat , he instantly had diarhhea which lasted for 2 weeks. He was also extra irritable. If you have any other questions, feel free to message me. Otherwise , i wish you and your family the best of luck!
H.

I believe everything we put in our mouths and on our skin directly affects how we function. Of course, how our bodies react to different things varies. I would highly recommend putting her on a GF diet. I know of many mothers that our very satisfied with the results. Also, it's easiest to start now, while she's young than when she's older. Believe me!!! I've experienced it.

Good luck and good job with looking into your options for your girl. She's a lucky little girl to have you, a concerned mom who does her research!

H., I would have the child checked for celiac Sprue...I have never seen it documented but can tell you from my own experience; My x husband had it very prominently and can only eat a totally mediteranian diet. He can have NO bread products or cereal grains whatso ever or his intestines close up and he needs to go to the hospital and be put on ivs till his body calms down. When I had my son..I breast fed him for 1 1/2 yrs and was told that when he was two we could test him for this...and we did. He did not have it but we were also warned against false positives. I wanted to talk to you about your husband. My x was the first born but the runt of the family. Both of his parents were tall 6'3" dad, 5'10" mom. His sister and younger brother are tall like his parents but he did not get as tall as either and my theory is because his celiac sprue was not diagnosed until his teens that his body lost a lot of growth power to the fact that he could not digest food that was passing through. I personally think that there would be other factors that you would have mentioned if your child has true celiac sprue. I do think that I would check but there are so many factors with children that could cause your little girl to have developmental differences with other children. Just remember she is special in her own right and is on her own timetable for develepment.

Hi H.
I don't know alot about celic spru diease except that it is fairly easy to test for. talk ti your doctor about your family history and ask for a blood test to be done. I also know that in some celiac spru patients there is problems with the nurealogicl system like epilepsy. Good Luck and talk ti your doctor. T.

My daughter had gross motor delay but I blamed it on prematurity at birth because there was no other indication that anything else could have caused it.

After physcial therapy for only 6mos. she was a completely different child and is now 7years old and is in all sorts of sports, extra curriculars and you'd never know something was ever wrong.
