H1N1 Vaccination for Children

Are you getting you children the H1N1 vaccination? Why or why not? There are so many people against it and so many for it. My pediatrician said it was not safe to get and she wasn't letting her own kids get it, but I feel like because it is more of a respiratory flu, it is more dangerous. Any input would be great.

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of the great responses. I am going with my instincts on this one and not getting the shot for myself or my kids. I have always been cautious with vaccinating my kids and this one is just too new, too fast. My sister and her kids all have the swine flu right now and they are getting through it. I wish all of you and your families a healthy season.

There are very good reasons why this vaccine is bad news. By the way, Jennifer S is right about what she wrote. People just don't think that their government would ever push something dangerous. By the way, I live near a Navy Base and I know for a fact that they are requiring all military to take the vaccine. They are also limiting their gun usage because the vaccine has psychiatric medication mixed in too. This is true and I've got the email from the military to prove it.

My children are 5 and 7 and we have stayed away from vaccines (except for one at aga two for my daughter which led to months of illnesses). We never did again and she never has to see the dr for a sick visit. My son has yet to go to the doctor for a sick visit and he is now 5. My doctor does NOT recommend it and is actually against it. He is saying that it is a big scare. Read Dr. Gordon's note.

Good luck.

Let's see.. rush job to mass produce, pressure on the FDA to approve quickly, NO testing done, same chemical compound that they used back in 1976 which paralyzed and/or killed millions but they had no Idea why it happened, over 60% in California alone contains Thimersol (it's baaaaaaaaaack!), contains formaldehyde which is a known carcinogenic, if this flu really exists (which I highly doubt.. didn't back in 76 why would it now?) it's a much more mild form of the flu, the vaccine is GUARANTEED to make you or your lil one sick... with all of that information out there... my answer is a NO, but it is to all vaccines. Just not willing to risk killing my kid to not protect him from something that our country isn't prone to in the first place.

No No No, I will never again get my family flu vaccines. And this H1N1 is especially dangerous. there is a you tube news cast of a researcher, I think he is, that said he would not let his children get it. He was being interviewed about how they came up with this vaccine. They don't even know if it's the right ones then it has other ingredients that are toxic. Look up autism, body ecology. Mary Tocco, childhoodshots.com and there are many more. If you are into health at all and our childrens future, beware of vaccines. Feed our families well. Westonapricefoundation.org

It's a horrible vaccine, full of mercury and other additives. Just make sure your family gets a healthy diet, fresh air and vitamin D3. Also, the tamilflu vaccine is made from star anise and then adulterated. If someone gets sick you can use a homeopathic tincture of star anise.

I've listened to the head of the CDC and the head of the department of health here in LA on KCRW and concluded that I will get it for my kids if it becomes available. I continue to be baffled by parents who forget that before vaccines, childhood mortality was very high, and parents usually lost one of their children to illnesses that we now vaccinate againts. This vaccine was produced in exactly the same way as the seasonal flu vaccine - it is just a different specific virus that they used. So I am surprised by your pediatrician's response.

I am just going to say something...for those of you AGAINST vaccinating, why do you try to convince others NOT to vaccinate....afterall if it weren't for the rest of us vaccinating you may find yourself in a rough spot. We are taking the risks to keep not only ourselves safe from illness but you and your family as well. Thanks to vaccinators, many of the nasty diseases out their are no longer of concern to the you and the rest of the american population. Lets hope H1N1 becomes one of those as well!

I am "anti" on the subject and was happily surprised to see the educated answers below. SH said a lot. One thing I will add is when we try to vaccinate a virus to non-existence it only mutates and gets stronger. It makes no sense and the people selling us on it have skewed the information beyond belief. The vaccination business is corrupt to the very core.

Seeing the tone of all your other responses, mine might not be the most popular.

First of all, I feel that their is alot of fearmongering going on about the H1N1 illness and vaccine. On both sides.

Second, there has been clinical trials for the vaccine. One of my children was involved in one. Before anyone passes judgement on why I would allow my child to do a clinical trial, my decision for participation was based on the fact that this was a second phase trial and I did the research on the safety of the vaccine in the first phase. My child got the nasal vaccine. We had to take her temperature nightly and record any adverse reactions for over 6 weeks. There was none. It is interesting to note that 3 weeks ago, my oldest child came down sick with (I believe) the flu. I became very sick, as well as my husband. What about my child that was in the clinical trial? She literally got a fever for 4 hours and then was fine. We just found out this week that she recieved the real vaccine and not the placebo.

Deciding to get the flu vaccine for you and your children is purely a personal choice. You do need to be informed and hear both sides of the issue. I did feel strongly about telling you our experiences.

I realize it is a very personal question and you have to do your homework and read well respected articles and come to the decision yourself. But, no, we already have enough problems here, don't need to give my kids something that HAS NOT been tested on kids or on anyone long term (you need long term study for the "big picture". We are doing lots of Vit C, D and black elderberry. Good luck.

Researching the subject is like riding a rollercoaster! People are full of opinions for THEIR own reasons, pro and anti-vaccine. I would say to stick with what the professionals are saying (doctors, viral biologists, people educated extensively-not the "want-to-be's").

I have a small child w/viral-induced asthma that nearly sends him to the hospital, and his Ped feels that the benefits far outweigh the risk. If he didn't have asthma, I more than likely would not consider it, because of the mystery ingredients (squalane), which is highly toxic. I'm still on the fence, I want to protect him, but I don't want to fill him w/toxins.

Good luck w/your decision...it's a tough one!!!

We will not be getting it. There is no greater fighter of disease than the immune system that God gave us. I plan to feed and strengthen our immune systems, not weaken them with chemicals.

Pharmaceutical companies are corrupt and easily proven to be so. They buy off doctors and politicians. They also feel that anyone sickened by their poisonous vaccines are collateral damage.

We will invest in God. He is none of the above.

God Bless!

The false information out there against it is very scary and Jennifer S's information is beyond frightening...because of how false it is...Jennifer I truly hope you and your children do not get sick...to save you from the guilt you will undoubtedly go through seeing your loved ones suffer and possibly die...and if your information is correct, why has Polio, measles, and all the other diseases we vaccinate against not come back "worse" and killed thousands of people? Because vaccines work. They may very well cause other problems in a small population and that is a horrible side effect that needs to seriously be looked at, but the risks of all these people increasingly not getting them is what is going to eventually cause these horrible diseases to come back, if they do, not the people GETTING the vaccines.

Hi Nancy,

I am not getting it nor will I allow my children to get it. I have done the research. I urge you to do the same.

A couple of questions to ask yourself...
1. How much testing was done on this vaccine?
2. What percentage of the time is it effective?
3. What is the comparison of the regular flu to the H1N1 virus?
4. How many people die from the regular flu EVEN with the flu shot?
5. How much money will be made from this vaccine?

I got this email this morning:
http://www.naturalnews.com/027311_vaccines_drug_companies...

Please read the links on the right.

Nancy, this is what I ask my clients...
If your doctor recomended to you to "break your arm and let's heal it just in case you break your arm and it needs to know how to heal it". Sounds silly doesn't it? I feel the same way about the vaccine. Hey, let's inject your body with the virus just in case you body is infected by the virus... it is ludicrous.

Make an informed decision.

I don't want to go through what his family is going through if there is even a small chance I can prevent it.

I'm surprised to hear your pediatrician say that. All the pediatricians in my Dr. group are getting it and giving it to their children. As my Dr. explained to me, they make flu vaccines quickly every year as they update the newer strains of the flu. They make an educated guess as to which strains of the flu to include in the the flu shot. If they miss one or there is a new strain you may still get the flu (but will be protected to those included in the shot.)This is just another strain that they are adding. Next year it will be in as part of the regular flu shot. They assured me that this is how they treat every strain of the flu. He said not being vaccinated for small children, elderly, and caregivers of either of those in most in danger. Anyone with a health condition, teens and younger and elderly are more at risk for serious complications.

Hi there.

As soon as my pediatrician's office has it, my two kids are getting it. And, if we can find it, my husband and I will get it as well.

My pediatrician is Jan Johnson at Seaview Pediatrics. I completely trust her and she recommended it to us. When I asked, she said they make it the same as the regular flu shot, it just contains the one strain instead of the other strains in the reg flu shot. It's safe and with this flu hitting the respiratory system so much more, she recommends...at least for my kids.

Of course, with all the delays we may end up with the virus before we can get the shots, but hopefully not.

Thanks.

I would prefer to get my family vaccinated, but for anyone choosing to get the H1N1 vaccine, good luck finding it. As far as the risks of the H1N1 vaccine, my understanding is that the H1N1 vaccine is produced exactly the same as the influenze (seasonal) flu vaccine, so the risks should be the same. The only difference is that the H1N1 virus seems to reproduce much slower than the influenze virus in the current production method implemented. If you do choose to get vaccinated, the Los Angeles Public Health Department (http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/)is holding free vaccination clinics between Oct 23rd and Nov 8th.
My son's pediatrician and my own physician have strongly recommended that my family get vaccinated against the H1N1 virus since we all fall under the high risk categories, but I've been calling and calling around my area and absolutely no one has it. My own physician has had it on order but now highly doubts she'll ever receive it. She is even skeptical that the non-preserved vaccine will ever appear and has told me today that the state of CA is considering dropping the law that it be illegal for pregnant women and infants to receive the preserved vaccine. Even though she feels the risks of preserved vaccine are minuscule compared to the risks associated with the H1N1 flu itself, she said that if I can find the non-preserved vaccine to try to get that for my son and myself over the preserved vaccine.
My son's school has already had an outbreak (over half a class was out), so I had to take him out of school to reduce out risk. My physician was so worried she called in a prescription for Tamiflu for me and told me to take it if my son or I developed any symptoms. Her office was even calling me everyday to check on us.
Whatever you decide, good luck to you.

Amendment: My son and I just got vaccinated this morning at one of the LA County vaccine clinics. Yes, we waited, but mostly because the non-preserved doses for pregnant women had not arrived yet. By the time we left, there was only a minimal line and not what is being shown on the news. So, if you live here and do decide to get vaccinated, I'd highly recommend going to one of the county clinics being held (maybe just wait until the afternoon). The clinics were very well organized and everyone was very pleasant.

I was having this debate until I found out there isn't even any vaccine available in our area for quite awhile. Might want to find out if you even have the option of getting it before stressing out too much. But given the opportunity, I would get it for myself and kid. From everything I've heard, it's developed the same as the seasonal flu vaccine, and if you're concerned about preservatives, you can get the nasal vaccine for young kids, which doesn't have it.

Yes, my 5 and 7 year olds already had the H1N1 Flumist (nasal spray). It does not have any thimerosal (preservative) in it. They had no reaction from it. My 7 year old loved that it was not a shot! They are supposed to have a 2nd dose 3-4 weeks later, but I'm not sure their pediatrician's office will have it in stock. I feel better knowing they've had one dose of it though. A previously healthy 5 year old girl died recently in San Diego county and I'd feel so guilty if my kids got sick and I didn't vaccinate them for it if I could have. I am friends with 2 doctors who got the H1N1 vaccine for their kids and recommended it for ours. Good luck deciding!

There is so much debate, fact or fiction to it all, and opinions both professionally and as lay-persons.

The bottom-line is: do your research. Even the Seasonal Flu vaccines are created each year and then dispersed to the public without much testing, I believe.

Yes... they "say" that this H1N1 virus is a "mild" flu. BUT... the difference is that is has a different method of operation. The Swine Flu burrows itself into the lining of the lungs differently, than the Seasonal Flu. Thus, more lung complications.... such as Pneumonia and other lung & breathing complications. And, there is no way for sure... to know IF the vaccine does indeed lessen the severity of it, or prevent the sickness.

As for the H1N1 not being tested in children.... that is what I read too. Therefore, there are no confirmed facts of side-effects. But, I had "heard" that that is the same for the regular Seasonal Flu too. Yet, people take the regular Seasonal Flu vaccine more readily....

But again, all these so called 'facts' are hard to pinpoint CONCLUSIVELY. And there are so many differing opinions on it, educated or not. Even medical professionals have different views on it.

There is ALSO the Intranasal Flu MIST. Which has no Thimerisol in it or preservatives, I believe. It is a 'weakened' attenuated virus. IF a person is "healthy" with no medical problems, it is supposed to be fine for them taking it. The Seasonal Flu, has this version as well. My Daughter... has taken the Flu Mist, for the SEASONAL flu, both this year and last year. She had absolutely NO adverse reactions to it whatsoever. My Pediatrician does not care for the "Flu Mist"... because it has a weakened virus. BUT, I have no problem with it. My Daughter did NOT get sick from it at all, she is healthy as a horse, and did not get the Flu last year either. BUT... I am NOT going to have my kids get the Swine Flu shot/or vaccinations. Just because.

IF... a person has a lung disease/illness/condition... then they say that it is recommended.
- Me, I have Asthma. For this reason, I recently got a Swine Flu shot. Just with a mere common cold, my Asthma has brought me down to my knees & I almost got Pneumonia once... and I know how serious Asthma is. So that is MY reason. My personal reason. And I am not advocating it for everyone, nor trying to stop anyone from taking it.
I have NOT yet... gotten any "side-effects." Yes, sure... side-effects can take years to emerge. The same for anything we take in medically. Even aspirin & coffee can be harmful for some.

Like anything, practice good hygiene to prevent sickness. For me, that includes even when walking around the malls with my kids. I have delayed signing-up my son for a playgroup class right now... in light of the flu season arising, for example. I do NOT want to bring him into close-kid-populated "classes" right now... because as you know, parents ALWAYS bring their kids to a play-group even though their kid is "sniffling" or "coughing". And, young toddlers ALWAYS rub their snot/nose mucous anywhere! I have seen this MANY MANY times. Even though it is thoroughly thoughtless & rude.

And, I have "heard" on the news, that the "zone" of contagiousness for the Swine Flu is: 10 feet. So keep that in mind. Mind you, this was the news I heard on 1 TV station. Who knows what another TV station would say... maybe something else. The point being... there are so many "facts' floating around, that it is confusing.

In any event... take healthful precautions about keeping healthy... washing hands for 20 seconds etc., taking Vitamin D, etc.

All the best,
Susan

It's not considered safe due to the Thymerisol (preservative) and 27,000X of normal amounts of mercury in the vaccination. Thymerisol was taken out of all other vaccines due to neurological side affects. Mercury is linked to Autism...and many other brain and neurological affects, it's like overdosing the child with poison. Other metals are absorbed and leave the body, as I understand it Mercury builds up. That was the controversy in the 'old' formulas and adding more vaccines. My child is up to date on his required shots, but with lots of hand washing and limited exposure we are not getting H1N1.

Hey Nancy-
I just wanted to say that I too have a concern about the H1N1 Vaccination. There is sooo much coverage on the news where I am that at first I wasn't really concerned and then all of the sudden I see things on the bottom of the news screen that say young children are dying and spreading the disease to the rest of America! Just yesterday I called the Midwife we used when our son was born. I truly value her opinion and judgement. Her advice was this...Do Not get the vaccination. Wait it out as long as you can, it was "put" together very quickly without a "tried and true" result. She also said that much of the media coverage at this point is scare tactics. (questionable) So we decided Not to get it or the regular influenza. I have started a childrens low dose homeopathic vitamin C for our baby and my husband and I are currently doing 10 days on 10 days off of Echinacea. I still breastfeed,so our son will receive some of that. I still don't know much about the vaccination - I did so much research on the other regulars that I just don't feel comfortable going and getting it with out knowing exactly what it does and how it works. Hope this gives some extra insight...? Sorry about rambling. Im happy there are others that are unsure and seeking info. I would be happy to hear what you decide and your thoughts on this as well. Take Care!

My husband and the majority of my friends are doctors. We all have young children and plan to give them the vaccine as soon as it becomes available. My understanding is that it is like any other flu shot, just a different strain. I have given my children the flu shot this year and in the past, and have not had any complications. I think that you have to weigh the risks for and against, and make an educated decision. I did that, and I feel that there is a greater risk to my children (death) to not get it, than to get the vaccine. Even if they have serious side effects from the vaccine, they are unlikely to die from them. I hope that helps.
