Had a Baby 5 Weeks Ago!

Ok, so I just had my 4th baby a little over 5 weeks ago and it has been a very pleasant surprise. I am so much more calm than I was with the other three, and she is a very mellow baby. We are thrilled to have her around. I just have a question that I am shocked I even have to ask, but I am still bleeding. Has that happened to anyone? I stopped bleeding with the other babies long before this. I have my 6 week appointment next Friday but thought I would see if any of you had this happen and if I need to move my appointment up.

Thanks ladies!

P.S. I do not have any odd odors but do still have cramping. I am hoping this is just because it's #4 and I am 40 so it's just taking my body longer to adjust.

Edit: You all are so great! I thought I would clarify a couple of things. This is my 4th baby and my 5th birth (we lost one at 5 months). Also, she is exclusively breastfed so although I know if could be a period, I don't think it is yet. Also, I already has the creamy colored period for a day or two then then full blood came on again and it is quite dark.

What can I do next?

I had my 2nd baby and the delivery was very fast I also was bleeding for 9 weeks. My OB did an ultrasound and I had a piece of placenta that hadent come out and that was causing the bleeding. I had a d&c and a day later it stopped. I hope it stoops soon for you no fun when you want to feel back to normal. Good luck

I think I bled and then had darkish brown discharge for like 7 or 8 weeks with my second daughter. It felt like it lasted FOREVER.

I am a midwife. Your bleeding could be one of two things. Since it has been five weeks it could be your first period, especially if you are not breastfeeding. The other likely scenario is that you are doing too much (easy to do with three other children.) Your uterus has a wound on it the size of the placenta. It essentially scabs over and heals up. However, if you are up running around a lot that scab can tear away and your bleeding will begin again. Also, the cramping is normal. It does take a full six weeks for the uterus to completely shrink back down and the cramping is the uterus doing this. Or, if it is your period you could be cramping from that.

I bled for about 8 weeks with my last baby. With my first, I started my period at 5 weeks even though he was exclusively breastfed. Just mentioned to your doctor at your 6 week checkup if you are still concerned.

I had this with my third, bled for about 5.5 weeks and then stopped for about 4 days and went again for another 2ish weeks. It was not fun. For me everything was fine, I would say you will be just fine also but if any worries go on in.

I went through that with my second. I had these crazy clots and bled for a full six weeks... CRAZY!! Also when I would nurse I would cramp for quite a while, I think maybe the whole six weeks. I was fine, so it sounds normal to me! Hang in there and congrats!!

When you are really active and it sounds like you are with 3 other babies in your life, your body will bleed longer. So if it is dark blood you're at the end.. When it shows red blood it means things are still healing or that you over did it. We always say that you can bleed up to 8 weeks.

It's most likely normal. If you arent having any ridiculous pain with it I would give it a little more time.

I bled for about 6-8 weeks with my first two, and I was 27 when I had my first one. If it's getting lighter in flow and is transitioning from red, you are good. It's not exactly a fun process, but hey, the babies are always worth it. :)

red red blood call your OB right away. Red but mostly brown blood is better, but still call your OB. Cream-tan colored is normal at this stage...

Are you breastfeeding? Cramping is usually the uterus going back to it's position and size before pregnancy and breastfeeding speeds it along and due to that, makes it a bit more noticeable.

Hi, congrats on your newest family member. I had my third and final baby in July and I had bleeding for 8 weeks. With my others I was finished in about 4. This time around I think it was because my uterus was so damaged and paper thin. I had C sections and with my last my OB had a hard time sewing me up. She said the stitches were tearing out of my uterus.

You may want to call your OB just to check. It's normal for some women to go for 6 weeks. My mother had me terrified because she evidently had a horror show going on for a full 6 weeks after my birth, but I had very little ever and was completely done by 3 weeks. Everyone is different -but since it went away and came back -I would call my doctor.

I bled with each of my 3 babies for about a month...maybe a week or two over. I'd say it's normal BUT if you are also doing a lot of activity since the birth of your baby, that can also cause you to bleed harder and longer (this is exactly what MY OB said ). Many women fail to understand that having a baby is tough on the body and you do need to rest and re-gain your strength. If you can, put your feet up and relax for a couple of days and see if that lessens your bleeding. IF so, then you need to be resting more. Still, if you are concerned, call your OB.

I actually had this problem with my 2nd *and last* pregnancy.
I was still bleeding a little when my appt came around.
I was worried something was wrong, but I was just fine.

If you're worried though, it never hurts to call your dr :)

I don't want to scare you, but I bled for 14 months straight after having my twins and it was the big heavy blood. My doctor had no idea what to do she tried all forms of birth control, but it didn't work. I went to a natural doctor, he gave me a medicine called utrophin.... within 1 month I quit bleeding and had normal periods again. I don't think it is something to worry about, but I would probably put a call into the doctor to see what they say.

I just had our 3rd five months ago. I bled for about 6 weeks (sometimes on and off....) It was just blood clots coming loose. I went for a 2 mile walk one day, passed a big clot and that was FINALLY the end of all that bleeding!

(I was so worried about it that they even did an ultrasound and that's how I know that the clots were still causing my bleeding.....)
