I don't know how well this question can be answered but any help would be appreciated. I want a new hairstyle. It is past time for this. I am 27 years old with two children and my hair looks like it has since college plus I never do anything for myself and this is something I really, really want. I have had very short hair and very long hair. It is currently fairly long, the middle of my back and I usually keep it in a bun or pony. It is super thick and naturally wavy but more on the straight side. It can be straight or curly fairly easily. I have gone to many a salon and asked the stylists what they would recommend and they either look at me like I am crazy, trim a few inches off and call that a haircut, or tell me to look in their books and pick something (and the books are awful). I guess I thought they would be more helpful (maybe it isn't their job to help me find a good style, just to cut hair, I don't know). Anyway, I have looked online and everything I find looks like it is straight out of the 80s or early 90s or are just pictures of celebs. I need some ideas on what would look good. I have an oval-shaped face and I wear glasses. I am a stay at home parent so I can afford to be a little risky (I don't have to look ultra professional and I am not opposed to trying something that you might not find on a suburban housewife, if you know what I mean, but I don't want to look like a high school kid). Anyone have any suggestions? Websites? HELP ME!

So What Happened?

I am going to try a new salon that is owned by my husband's coworker. Hopefully someone there can help and I am going to continue to look online until I find something I like. I totally forgot that I used to have my hair thinned when I was in high school so I am going to ask that that be done again and I am leaning towards getting a long bob with some bangs and maybe a bright stripe of color. Thanks everyone!

As a hairstylist...(until 10 months ago when my daughter was born) the best advice or best way to explain wanting a new look is this: all hair styles that fall below the shoulders tend to end up always looking the same unless you do some major styling each morning, which who wants to do that? So, if you want to keep you hair below the shoulders try adding some long, side swept bangs or even a blunt bang straight across. This tends to really give you a new, different feel to your look. If you want something above the shoulders a clean bob would be an easy, but stylish option as well. You also mentioned that you have super think hair so definitley ask your stylist to go to town with the thinning shears, sometimes even that can make a world of difference. My other suggestion is maybe color? Something subtle just to mix it up a little bit? Also, oval face shape means you can wear any hairstyle. If you see someone's hair you love ask them who cuts it. It may seem awkward to go up to a stranger, but most are flattered and happy to reccomend who they see. Hope this helps a little!!

Sounds like we look similar (I am 28, glasses, very thick, wavy hair) I JUST found a hairstyle that I love about three months ago - check out my profile pic - it's what I call a "Trendy Mom" cut PLUS all I have to do is brush it and put smoothing cream on it in the AM after a shower - super easy!!! I was so sick of wearing ponytails all the time and buns to work so I hear ya! GL!!

I am going throught the same thing right now - there is a web site I found stellure.com that lets you upload a picture and model the hair cuts on you ($35 -40, I forget how much)! I have not gotten a picture up there, but did check out thier free modleing tool and it is a very nifty site. They also had a number of good reviews.

I think it is worth the money, but that is a personal decision.

Godo luck!

i was going to ask this, and since my hair is different i might still ask it. Interesting answers so far. My only advice is to see if you have a cosmetogoly school near you and see if some one in training with their supervisors around could suggest something great for you. I haven't tried this yet but just called today to see about their hours. Just FYI it was about the cost of Famous Hair/ those types of places.
Actually you didn't say, are you going to a higher end salon that might be more customer oriented??

As a stylist, my favorite all time haircut is the bob. It is so versatile and the easiest to style. It can be shorter in the back and longer in the front, se metrical or a-se-metrical, layered or one length, stacked, bangs or long bangs, and is easy to grow out. Another fabulous option is a color change. We're coming into fall so really light is out. Coffee colored lowlights or mochas are popular right now. When googling looks try looking up "2010 hairstyles, current trends, trendy hairstyles" I just recently changed my whole look and went with a dark plum color, bob shorter in back with Betty Page bangs, and I love it! All I do is use mousse and a round brush and I'm done.
