Hi,
My 3.5 year old son came down with Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease. I was curious if anyone had any experience with this and how long it lasts? Are there any side effects, will it be something he can get again, etc.
I did take him to the pediatrician, and all he said was that it is very common in pre-school age children, they don't treat it because it is a virus, and they don't keep them from going to school.
Thanks-A.

What can I do next?

Doesn't it concern you that the preschool allows him to go to school like this? Wonder where he got it from? Things that make you go hmmmm!

Anyways... since it's an antiviral they do have antiviral meds that the ped could have given him. However, let me tell you some natural sources that are also shown to be anti-viral. You will need to do your research since I dont know much about HFM Disease. Garlic and St. John's Wort are both antiviral in nature. (Garlic is also antibacterial) You can do liquids and make an smoothie for him to drink which would be soothing and cooling to the sores. Stick with things like bananas and apples and pears as opposed to berries which are more acidic.
Also, get him on some probiotics which strengthens the immune system.

HI A.
from my understanding when my kids got it It was because toys were not cleaned and yes it will happen again if they don't clean the toys the right way so tell the pre- school teacher that they need to clean better so this doesn't happen again D. Mother of 4

I have also had this, and it is very painful. I wouldn't send your child to school with it either - for one you don't want to pass it on, and two, he will be very uncomfortable. Green Tea ice cream and milk were about all I could handle eating as an adult. There is a mouth sore medicine called Tanac that you can get at Wallgreens that helps numb the pain so you can eat, that was heaven to me. I would just check with your doc to make sure it is ok to use with the kiddo.

Our family is well aquainted with Hand Foot and Mouth Disease. My son had it when he was just one. It lasts about 7-10 days in most cases, but I think it can last up to two weeks. It is very painful. You can give him a teaspoon of mylanta before meals to help coat the sores and make the food go down better. (This advice came from our pediatrician). Stick to very soft, non acidic foods. My daughter had it at christmas time, and she had a very severe case of it. She was very miserable and I couldn't get her to eat anything other than macaroni and cheese and drinkable yogurt. She then gave it to me, and it was horrible. The sores are excruciating, and it hurts to eat anything. (Although my appetite wasn't affected, so I was starving since I didn't want the pain of actually trying to eat.) Offer him anything he will eat, and be very sympathetic. As far as getting it again, once you have a specific strain you are immune to that strain, but there are several different strains you can get so having it once doesn't necessarily mean you will not get it again. Another word to the wise, the most common way for infection is from fecal material, so diligent handwashing is extremely important, since the virus continues to be excreted for a long time after the symptoms disappear. Hopefully your little guy will be better soon.
