Hand Foot Mouth - Marietta,GA

My 2 1/2 yr old son has been diagnosed with Hand, Foot, Mouth. His mouth is full. Really full of sores. My pedestrian said to mix Benadryl and Maalox together and swab his mouth. Which is easier said then done with an over dramatic 2 yr old. He won't eat much because it hurt. I have been giving him children’s mortron, which helps. The sores seemed to have spread to his lips. Is there anything that we can put on his lips?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone. He is all better. When they are in that much pain and you can't do anything about it, it's hard. He ended up living off of yogart, cheese, milk, jello, and popsicles. Now he is back to eating me out of house and home.
Thanks

Try Glyoxide, which is a mouth wash. It is very sweet tasting and it is ok if he swallow it. It will probably help his stomach, which is probably also in an upheaval. My son had this and the Glyoxide is the only things that seemed to give him any comfort. You can buy this at any pharmacy

i had hand foot mouth one time myself...it seems like i drank a mixture of benadryl, maalox, and motrin or something similiar...if you can get your child to drink it, this should help even if you don't swab it in his mouth...i would attempt to put the mixture on his lips, too...

Hi H.,

Benadryl and Maalox will only help his comfort but do nothing for the virus itself. Melaleuca oil will heal the sores quickly and can be put in a solution of water for gargling and will not hurt if swallowed. It will also heal the hands and the feet and the lips.

The Melaleuca company has two products known as Hot Shot and Cool Shot that can be sprayed into the mouth and swallowed and taste like Cinnamon and Mint respectfully. They have a high concentration of oil in them and will heal and keep the virus from spreading down the back of the throat. Also, their Gold Bar(melaleuca oil soap) will keep it from spreading more.

I know he's miserable and I would love to help. If you're interested, let me know.

God bless!

M.

We use baby aquaphor for everything! We discovered it when I was on medication from the dermatologist that really dried my face/lips out. He suggested using aquaphor on my lips, since it is easy to obtain and works for all sorts of skin irritations. It worked wonders. Now, we use the baby version at night to prevent diaper rash on my son, and on his thumb when it gets chapped (he is a thumb sucker) and on any other minor skin irritations. We have had wonderful results, and it doesn't seem to sting or bother him. In fact, he usually calms down when he sees it coming, because I think he knows it makes him feel better! I hope this helps. Good luck!

So sorry to hear you have a sick little one! My 2 yr old and I both had this last spring, and we remember well. We both used Motrin, and my daughter found much relief in popsicles. Something no one told me until after I made myself miserable... avoid OJ or yogurt with fruit. The acid made my blisters worse. Hope all is better soon!! Prayers for you both!

Hi H.,

My child hasn't personally had the Hand Foot and Mouth, but I can tell you that me and my family have used Melalueca products for sores, cuts, scrapes, etc. and that stuff works wonders!! If you try the other recommendations and still aren't getting the results you need for your son, I would difinitely get in touch with Mimi. Good luck and I hope your son is much better very soon!

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. My DS got this same thing when he was not quite two and then again, but much less in severity when he was about 7-1/2. I couldn't understand how he had contracted this since I'm also a SAHM.
Anyway, one thing that was kind of a help to him was "Get Better Bears" . They are basically a sore throat lozenge shaped like a bear on a stick (like a lollipop). They are meant for kids 2 and up and will somewhat numb his mouth a bit to make him more comfortable. Meanwhile, take your cues from your son as to what gives him relief. We got through the worst night, when the sores were at their worst and right before they began to heal, with children's motrin. My pediatrician had me up the dose a bit and my son FINALLY got to sleep. Take care of yourself too. This will pass soon!

Plenty of liquids and rest. I found that popcicles, yoguart and green numbing spray cant thing of the name of it helped. Choriseptic Spray ? Helped. Remember it can be passed on to others through diaper change and droplets. S wash hands good. Plenty of cool fluids helps the discomfot. Yogart did help I thought anyway. Good luck

Ah yes, the good old Hand, Foot and Mouth fun and games, otherwise experienced in this house as Herpangina virus. There isn't anything more sucky than your little sweetie being in so much pain and not able to eat or drink.

The Benadryl and Maalox, aka "Magic Mouthwash" is pretty much your godsend now, along with Motrin and Tylenol. I would assume your son is running a fever as well? It's tough to get anything near their mouths when this virus is in its most acute stage. You might want to try ice cubes or ice cream, or something to help numb the area.

It just takes time, getting past this stage. It definitely sucks, but it will pass.

Good luck!

E.

There really isn't too much you can do, but just what the doc said. Don't worry about him eating, just make sure he is getting plenty of water to drink.
