Have a Drooler?

My son started drooling at 3 months and hasn't stopped since. It does get worse when a new tooth is coming in, but even when he isn't teething his shirts are constantly wet and slimy. I keep a bib on him most of the day and change it frequently, which does keep his top drier. We usually get the "oh, your son must be teething" from strangers... "Nope, he's just a drooler" is the standard response.

So did you have a drooler? When did it finally stop??? I have visions of him entering preschool with a bib around his neck.

What can I do next?

Three years ago when my first son was a drooler I read in some book that many people mistakenly say drooling is because of teething. Instead, the doctor in this book said that drooling begins around 3 to 4 months and can continue into the 2nd year to prepare the child for speech. It prepares the child by making them use muscles to move the excess saliva around, these muscles they are using to move the saliva around will be the muscles they need to use to form sounds and words later on.

Have a great day!

Hi there, my son is 3 1/2 and is still a bad drooler...he had severe oral aversion for over a year..so would not take anything by mouth..he is past all that now..but still drools..we think b/c his mouth muscles are not as strong as they should be...we had our son working with a therapist..she suggested...those little chewy toys...have them chew on them,, eat on chewy candy...suck on straws...up anything really to strenthen his muscles..hopefully over time will improve..

S., I had a drooler to. My daughter started about 3 months and didn't stop until she turned 11 months when her first set of teeth came in. It was hard at first for us both because I couldn't keep the area around her neck dry.she broke out with a terrible rash that her doctor called a yeast infection. My daughter would scratch at it until it became even more sore.fortunately with antibiotics and less drooling she has gotten better. Hopefully your baby will too. I don't think you will have to send him to preschool with a bib around his neck. Lol. A little about me...I live with my fiance and we have one daughter that turned 1 year old this week.

OH NO!!! My little girl is 16 mos old and is the same way. I have to change her bib every couple of hours because they are soaked!! I just tell people she's been teething since birth. I'm the same way....will she ever get to where she doesn't have a big covering up her cute little clothes? I'm the same boat with you! Maybe some they just have a sensative something that produced saliva. It's soooo gross too! If you find something out,let me know!!

My son was a heavy drooler. We did the bib thing too. He outgrew it eventually. He was fine by preschool:). Just mention it to your doc next time you take him in for anything if you are still worrying.

Glad to know I am not the only one...lol. I have a 19 month old son who still drools excessively. I keep warning him that if he doesn't figure out how to swallow he better start thinking about ways to explain the bib to his prom date...lol. I don't know what causes it, I go back and forth on ideas. Right now I think it is probably caused because my son sticks his tongue out when he is concentrating on something, hence mouth open, drool pouring out. Let me know if you come up with any great ideas on how to decrease the leaking.

My son is also a drooler and he is 21 months old. He usually drools when teething but he still go teeth to come through and still drools and ios not teething right now. As far as I know it is normal for a child to drool when so young. If you are really concerened talk to the doctor but other than that it is normal. And you should not worry so much.

My 14 month old son is the same way, too. In fact, if I don't wash every day, his bibs and clothes start to smell like mildew. I found that adding a 1/4 scoop of Oxy-Clean to each load will help get rid of the mildew smell.

I found some vinyl-backed bibs with cloth on the front at Wal-Mart to keep his clothes relatively dry. I still have to change his bibs every couple of hours.

I hadn't thought of the tonsil/allergy possibility. I'll definitely ask his doctor.

Take care,
J.

My nephew was an excessive drooler! My sister was constantly changing bibs and shirts. Come to find out his tonsils were enlarged and he had severe allergies. They did not remove his tonsils, I guess as he grew it became less of a problem. I think he was around 3 when he finally stopped.
