Have You Ever Used a Gym with Childcare?

I know that I need to go and actually inspect the individual facility for quality, but I'm just wondering if anyone has used a gym with onsite childcare? What are your thoughts? My baby has never had a non-family member babysit him, but I am so desperate to get out of the apartment and get some exercise. Would drop-in childcare be bad for a 7 month old baby (well, I'll probably join in a month, so 8 month old.) The one I'm looking into is NY Sports Club- does anyone have experience with this one?

I do have a jogging strroller, btw, but it's so hot!!

What can I do next?

Yes. but with my 2 older daughters. We started when they were 2 1/2 and 3 1/2. At X Sport Fitness. They loved it. I did not however, like the baby childcare I saw there. One baby I saw left in a stroller the whole time (and the baby was not asleep, just sitting there. I said something to the babysitter about it and she said the mom came in and said, just leave her in there unless she cries then take her out. How is that good for the baby?)The babysitters generally just sit down the whole time. They will intervene if there's a problem.
Now that I have a new baby, 3 months old, I don't think I'll use gym childcare even when he's a little older - I'm just not so comfortable with what I've seen...

I am super picky about cleanliness and safety, but needed to work out indoors since here in AZ it's hot in the summertime. I went to all gyms located within 5 miles of my home (7 of them) and compared them. I asked what hours the childcare is available, what ages are allowed, what the kids will play with-are they divided into groups or all in one room, who watches them? How many people watch them? How are the kids checked in and out? Then go with your gut instinct on which one is best for you. Also, you may not want to sign a long term contract without doing a free "trial" period first. Every gym I checked out had a 3-7 day trial where you could check out the facility. This would be a good time to see how things really go.

Iv'e used them personallly i waited until my kids were older, but if you check it out and ask about how little ones are separated from mobile acitve older ones you should be fine. I would also try to pin them down and find out when OFF peak hours are. it would be worth it for me to take them when i knew there would most likely be fewer kids. good for you for taking care of your body.

My gym has a daycare and all my kids have gone since infancy. Lots of babies only weeks old are in there (Most fitness moms want to get right back to the gym :) so it's not too young at all if your gym is set up for it. It's a great introduction to different people and settings for just an hour or 2. Ours is a small gym, You can see in the daycare room through one way glass or pop in as much as you want. If there's an issue, the sitter comes right out to tell you.

Yes. I take mine. Start now while your son is young. The older he gets it could be more stressful on both of you when dropping him off.

We had a membership for about a year after my third child was born. She loved it, even though she didn't usually have babysitters otherwise. We stopped going because when cold and flu season hit, we were forever picking up new germs or were contagious and didn't want to infect anyone else. When I realized that I had gone almost four months without using our membership, I dropped it.

I'm sure there are great ones out there. This might sounds silly, but look to see where the sinks are. If they are right there near where the kids are, good! When my daughter was about the age of your son I took her to childcare at a well known gym in our area. Within two weeks she got the rotovirus and rhinovirus and had to be hospitalized! Turns out, there was a hand washing issue there even though the facility looked clean and wonderful.
Good luck!

I drop in my kids at 24-hour fitness and love the break. Since only sn hour to 90 minutes I just made sure the place was clean, read sick policies and asked how they separate the older kids from babies. Check it out, but after a few visits you'll be more comfortable:)

You should do it! I take my kids to the gym day care and it's pretty good. They really love it and they are only in there about an hour a day. The only down side is that there is major sharing of germs. My people are really good about trying to stay on top of it, but it doesn't seem to always help. I try and wipe my kids down (at least hands and sometimes faces) after each visit and they're 1 and 3. My older one (girl) had more separation anxiety when I left her, my son had no problems at all. Even if your baby cries the first few times, do what you have to do! I'm sure you little one will learn to love it!

We belong to our local YMCA, and my boys LOVE the childcare (they're 2.5). They would scream and fight me when I'd come to pick them up!

I am super picky about childcare too, but both of my boys have gone to the gym childcare facilities at two gyms. It is only for about an hour, usually there aren't many kids and you are right there if needed. There are people around all the time and you can pass by and peek in the window any time you want to, although I never did! I think it is fine and would be a great outlet for you :D

My kids went and loved it! They have never had a problem with drop in child care and so far I've never had a bad experience. The gym I went to had 1 big room with a door that split in half......not sure what they are called.......when the room was open the top always stayed open. My place wouldn't change diapers or take em potty .....they paiged me when it had to be done and they were all cpr trained.

You should check out Stroller Strides. It an awesome total body workout and you can bring your baby with you. They have locations all over the country both indoors and outdoors. It was also great for meeting other moms and my son made some great friends too!

Totally worth it!! And it is really fun for the kids too-its a little social scene in there. Just don't stay away the full 2 hours that are usually alotted. I hate when people do that to their young children just to get away. Keep it to an hour tops.
