Headaches While on Period

I seem to have a constant headache from the time my period starts to pretty much the end - my neck also aches (usually quite tired). I really do not like to take meds but find I take one to two advil almost daily during this time. Not sure if it is related but I had paragard IUD inserted at the beginning of this year, my periods are a little more heavy than they were before which has always been heavy and last about 7 days (which again about normal for me) but before when I was on the pill which made it a little lighter and shorter. I have wondered about anemia but do not want to make an unnecessary trip to the dr. Any thoughts or suggestions?

What can I do next?

I don't have any suggestions, but just wanted to say thank you for posting this question! I never really made the correlation between my period & my headaches, but that does sound just about spot on (no pun intended, ha!). I'm not on any birth control at all for the first time in almost a decade, but I'm going to try to up my water intake & hope that works. Thanks!

Hi Victoria,

I suffer with the same headaches, but I do not use an iud. I spoke with my ob/gyn about it and he said it was probably due to the shift of hormone levels during my cycle. So in your case, it could be from the iud if it has added hormones.

The best thing to do is avoid caffeine at all costs. At other times of the month, caffeine can cure even the worst migraine, but during menstruation, the caffeine with the hormone level causes headaches to worsen. I also frequently use a hot towel and place it over my eyes...it helps a lot and helps me get to sleep.

Headaches are the worst. I hope you feel better soon.

It sounds fairly normal. I usually get some sort of headaches when mother nature shows up. I also find that right before she starts I have one day where I could sleep all day! You didn't mention your age. I have seen this change the closer I'm getting to the change of life.

That said, our family has gone organic about 4 months ago. What I have noticed is that I have relatively no PMS, fewer headaches and much less fatigue. My cycles are a bit easier and seem to be getting shorter.

If you are really concerned, and it sounds like you know your body, for your own piece of mind, see your doctor.

Like Carol, I have gotten more susceptible to extra "pains" during mother nature's visit, the older I have gotten. I'm now 42, and in the last probably 3 years I have had much more noticable cycles. I have always had a relatively heavy cycle, but never had much cramping or headaches or even moodiness. No longer. Now I have dull headaches on and off the entire week. Moodiness... my husband can spot a mile away. He always could, but now, even I can tell a difference. My digestion is even "off" the first day or so.

What seems to help me, it to increase my fluid consumption. Being even slightly dehydrated seems to up the incidence of headaches for me. Try sipping water throughout the day... and have a half a glass when you feel that headache coming on.

It might also be the change in your birth control method, but it might not be. Check with your doc about possible correlation.

I too get these headaches. I found if I limit my caffeine intake it helps, and getting a ton of sleep also helps.

I don't think you have to worry about anemia - you would probably have more symptoms of fainting, etc...I thought I may be anemic, but I got tested and was fine....then developed pregnancy anemia, had to take iron pills, and then got over it after I gave birth. My periods have always been heavy and I get fatigued, have PMS, headaches, cramps, etc. That is all part of being a woman, unfortunately. If you want, you could always try buying and taking the iron pills on your own - you can get them at the drug store or Walmart, etc...and then see if it makes you feel any more energetic or take care of your headaches. But usually during my period, i will just drink more water and take some ibuprofen.

As others have said your hormones are fluctuating during your period. Acupuncture can help reduce and even eliminate your headaches. I'm sure there are plenty of practitioners in your area.

Sounds like the hormones from the IUD. What about trying just a copper IUD without hormones?

When I had an IUD, I got migraines 4+ times per WEEK. I had that sucker taken out, and felt 100% better!! I didn't realize how awful it made me feel until it was gone. Now, no birth control, I'm still prone to migraines, usually the day before or the first day of my period. I make sure I get ridiculous amounts of sleep and drink plenty of water... it's the only thing that keeps the headaches away. I've also started taking daily vitamins... okay, they're my kids gummy vitamins, but still, it helps. Feel better!! :)

Even while on the pill, got minor headaches at the start of my period but never made the connection. Once I stopped the pill, they got worse. It was my husband who made the connection actually! Now, i keep better track of when my period is about to start. Then the night before I should get it, I take Excedrin Migraine. It prevents really bad headaches. I have a very short period so I may only take it once or twice each month. A couple of pills is worth it to me! My physician said they're called menstrual migraines. Take care of yourself!

I have been a migraine sufferer for about 10 years, but I always have them worse around my periods. It has a lot to do with the hormones, etc. The only thing that has helped me with Treximate, a migraine medication. Have you talked with your doctor?

I have the same problem. It is awful. I have found that Motrin Complete works a bit better than other things...not a lot though.
