Help! "Morning Sickness" Is Taking over My Life.

I know that other people have been in this situation before. I just need some encouragement. So, I am 9-10 weeks pregnant. I'm on summer vacation from teaching. I wasn't sure if I was going to make it through the last couple of weeks of school before my morning sickness got so bad I couldn't stand it. Thankfully, I got through, but now, instead of having a summer with my 4 year old, I'm laying around feeling really weak and puny, struggling to keep food down. The doctor has prescribed two different meds for nausea, but one doesn't do anything for me and the other has side-effects. I was elated when the nausea went away with the 2nd medicine, but then as I continued to use it, my exhaustion was unbearable and I started getting sharp pains in my back that felt more like chest pain than a sore back. I'd rather just be nauseated than be hurting my body. Okay, so I'm not taking any medicine, but I am really DOWN with my sickness. I don't know how many more times I have the heart to say to my little boy, "Mommy just really doesn't feel good right now." He's getting tired of hearing it. Now, I was sick as could be with him for these weeks 8-14. I worked the whole time, though. I honestly don't remember how I did it. One of my biggest complaints is dizziness. I wasn't feeling dizzy until last week. That takes it to a new level of miserable. What should I do? My mom and my husband have been there for me like champions. I am so grateful for them, but I'm tired of being unable to function and play with my little boy. Is there a solution, or do I just have to wait it out?

What can I do next?

I was in the same position as you. I was very sick with my son, but managed full time school and work. This time, however, I was NON-FUNCTIONAL. The DIZZINESS was horrible. It was like I had severe motion sickness. I couldn't really eat much and lost weight. I tried everything from seabands to Zofran. The Zofran helped me not vomit as much, but I still felt horrible...plus it stopped up my bowel movements for the two weeks I took it. It didn't me feel better and I stopped taking it because it wasn't worth it. Preggie Pops did nothing for me. I did find that Ginger helped somewhat...Gingersnaps and REAL ginger tea.

I was miserable and I'm sorry to say it, but some people just have to wait it out. I am having a girl this time, so it explains why things have been different. I started feeling better by 14 weeks. Hang in there!!! Everyone tells you it will all be worth it in the end...and it will... but I will think LONG AND HARD about ever considering a #3. Good luck to you!

didn't read all the responses but try increasing your protien intake and I drink flat gingerale. I have to stay away from sweets, hard candy and such b/c it makes me feel more natious. carbs help temporarily but protien seems to work much better...good luck! it is not fun but sooooo worth it!

I suffered with Hyperemesis gravidarum...morning sickness gone BAD!!!

Here is the website for those who suffer with it and ways to help.

http://www.hyperemesis.org/

With me I was on a lot of medications to help with with it.
Phenegren tablets, Reglen Tablets, Protonix Tablets, Zophrin Tablets...none of these worked. I ended up on a Zophrin pump and took the Phenegren pills as well as Reglen and protonix.
It helped enough to hold some food down.

The dizziness you are having is caused from either dehidration, lack of protien or low iron. I couldnt stand on my feet very long because I was dizzy all the time and for all the reasons above. I was in the hospital mulitple times for dehidration and low protien count.

Your doctor can provide you with Strips that you can test your urin throughout the day to make sure your in the normal range and if your loosing protein.

Eat peanut butter and crackers throughout the day this should help. Also take Iron supplements if you can. I am sure your not able to hold down your prenatiles I know I couldnt. So I drank Ensure for the extra vit.

Here are some things that helped me some:

* Eat small meals
* Dont eat anything that will hurt coming back up.
* Stay away from lettuce and steak...lettuce takes a long time to digest and will come right back up. Steak will be heavy and come back up.
* Stay away from acidic foods and drinks (Orange juice, red sauces)
* BRAT Diet (Banana, Rice, Apple sauce and Dry Toast)
* Chew gum or suck on a lolly pop, pepperment
* I hear sucking on a lemmon helps
* I hear ginger also helps.
* Stay away from strong smells
* Stay away from fast movement (motions sickness)
* Drink sprite/7 Up
* Saltine crackers

I hope I helped.

I didn't suffer from morning sickness, but do have motion sickness when on boats. I know ginger helps. Perhaps the accupresure bands might work for that as well. I don't know if accupuncture is an option, but heck, when you're miserable, who knows (I'd check with friends for a referral for someone). When I was nauseus, I felt better when I ate, but it sounds like thats not really workable for you. I've heard that keeping crackers, etc by your bed table and having some RIGHT AWAY when you wake up can help a lot.

Good luck!

I so feel your pain! Morning sickness is such a misleading term. I had "morning sickness" 24/7 through the 4th mo of my pregnancy. I never threw up but prayed to but the nausea made life miserable.

Try ginger snaps and really, really cold (I mean really cold) Ginger Ale. Ginger naturally helps the stomach.

Make sure you are drinking enough, with the heat make sure you allow extra, and eating at least a little bit. Nothing sounded good to me but I did find if I forced myself to eat at least something small (crackers, some fruit) it helped to level things out.

Make sure you aren't constipated. That started at the same time my nausea did and would make it worse.

5 years ago there was a prenatal vitamin that my doc prescribed to me that helped some. It has extra of some vitamin/mineral that is supposed to help but I don't remmeber what it is now. It didn't make it go away but did make it bearable!

Good Luck and know it will be temporary (doesn't help now though does it)!

I found that cold apricot nectar (in the fruit/juice aisle, Kerns is the brand name...it comes in white cans) helps as well as Herbalife's Herbal Aloe. If you would like to try the Aloe, let me know and I can get you in touch with a representative.

With both my pregnancies (2nd was with twins..I was VERY sick) I also found that eating 6-8 small meals a day instead of 3 helped alot.

WIth the 2nd I also took Phenegren--1/2 during the day and a whole one at night.

Try Lemons or anything with lemons in them. I drank lemonade like water with #3- I was so sick it's all I could do. Also, just eating lemons if you can handle it. Perhaps it's an old wives tale but someone told me and it worked. HTH

J.,
I am so sorry that you're feeling so bad. There is nothing worse than throwing up all of the time and being exhausted on top of it. With both of my pregnancies I threw up the entire time, all the way until the end. I drank alot of ginger ale, ate saltines. The other thing that made it more tolerable was before I even moved in the morning I would take a zofran and eat a cracker. I would then just lay still for about 10-15 minutes. I know this sounds extreme but it did help. I also tried sucking on hard candies-lemon drops worked. I'm a nurse too and I've never heard of anti-nausea meds causing back pain. I would try the meds again. As far as your dizziness-are you standing up too fast? Are you drinking enough? Keeping down any food? All of these things could contribute to dizziness. I was also taking 2 different anti nausea meds. I would take reglan every 6 hours and zofran every 6 hours. I would just alternate them. Hopefully your nausea will end and you will be able to enjoy the rest of your pregnancy! I know it stinks but you can do it! Don't worry about your son. He's probably perfectly fine with just laying down in the bed with you watching a movie. That's what I did w/my dd last summer. She turned 4 and did very well w/me being on bedrest. It doesn't take away feeling guilty but...it is only a temporary situation and I promise, he won't be scarred for life :-} pm if you need to talk. M.

Girl, I feel your pain.

I had Hyperemisis Gravidarum with both of my pregnancies, even with a Reglan pump, I still vomitted.

I didn't have a choice, but to just ride it all out until the birth. ( I guess I did have a choice, but I didn't want to end my pregnancies, I love kids! I just realized that may have come out wrong when I said I didn't have a choice..I think you know what I mean right?)

Anyway, None of those all natural remedies worked for me, the only thing I could do, was wait until I felt good to eat. Or just eat what sounded good, even if it was healthy or not.

Only you can know what to do to make yourself feel better.

Also, having some help around does make a difference. Although they can't be there with you 24/7, a lot of days, I just had to wait it out. A lot of times, it was me and my 3 year old in the hospital while I got an IV of fluid for dehydration. (My hubby traveled a lot and some in-laws weren't very understanding)

I hope this helps, but do know that we all understand and have been there, done that.

Sorry, this is long, but severe morning sickness is very close to my heart.

Hi J.,
first of all not to terrify you, but have you had an ultrsound to see if it is a mutilple gestation. More than one baby higher hcg levels and increaesed nausea.second are you sure the side effects of back pain are related to the medication. I would like to no what drug it is. As an labor and delivery nurse i have never heard of an antinausea medication causing back pain. Have you tried to retake the drug? Also exhaustion could be from the fact that you are now pregnant and chasing another child when with your first pregnancy you were not. I just recently had baby number three and what helped me was lemons and or lemonade. Also eat before you feel to hungry. As far as the fatigue i suggest to take a nap when your son naps.do not lay around get up and get active.if all else fails speak with your md to see what else he/she recommends.

I feel your pain. I chose not to take any medications because i didnt like the idea of unnatural substances in my body. what worked for me was a combination of saltines before getting out of bed, lime ginger ale, and lots of hard candy. its different for everybody but if you can find just the right combo you can find some relief. Also, just relax as much as you can, and try not to worry: it will get better. I didnt start getting over it untill 16 weeks... hang in there, and good luck!

Hi J.,
With my first pregnancy, I had HG (a very severe form of morning sickness) and lost 15 pounds by the time I was 9 weeks along. My midwife prescribed zofran and it worked wonders. (I was teaching at the time as well, and I don't know how I made it either!) You didn't say what pills you took, so maybe this is different. This pregnancy (I am 25 weeks along), I had minimal sickness and the only thing I did different was kept a regular exercise routine. I don't know if this helped, or if I just wasn't going to get sick this time around! Exercise does release endorphins so it might be worth while to try.
Good luck!

Zofran didn't work for me. I vomited every day from the time I was 5 weeks pregnat until 3 days after I had my daughter. I even ended up in the hospital a few times. It sucked. I just tried different things...sometimes I could keep sweet tea down, other times nothing but mashed potatoes.
My "morning sickness" (mine was all day and at it's worst in the afternoon)didn't go away, but it did get better.
I know it must be hard for you to have to tell your four year old you can't play because you don't feel good. I wish I had more encouraging words for you. Just know that it will get better and it will go away.
I have heard lemon water & ginger snaps help. One thing that did help me a little was having pretzels or crackers on my night stand and eating a few before ever standing up in the morning.

The only thing that helped me was to take pepcid ac twice a day. It really kept the acid under control.
