Help Motivate Me to Go Get My Hair Cut... Need Ideas...

My hair is sooooo long... I want it long in the summer, but it's not summer yet ;) I always try to talk myself into doing something different, then never follow through. I have 'crazy hair' (as my 8 year old calls it) and have no idea what hair style terms are aside from 'long layers' (because that's all I've had for 20 YEARS!!)... if I go too short, I get an afro, it's so curly...

So help me get motivated! What's your favorite hair style and why? What is YOUR hair like? Is it high or low maintenance?

What should I get done today? Suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

@ES: Can't change the color, I'm proud to be a natural redhead (that I dye to cover the grays, LOL!!)

It does grow insanely fast, so I'm not terribly worried about that!

I always had long hair, then I started getting crown baldness due to age and pregnancy. I had to cut it and when I did I got a shaped cut. layered, with bangs. I loved it. Everyone raved. NOW I let it go again and it looks like helmet of frizz. Bleck thanks for MOTIVATING me to go again.

Go in and tell the stylist how much time you're willing to spend each morning and what you're worried about (too short = afro). Then trust her to select a good style for your face and hair type.

Have you ever seen What Not To Wear? In EVERY SINGLE case, the women look a million times better after they've gotten their long layers cut into a real shape. Do it!!

I'm a hairstylist. Consult wise, I would ask, what do you like about your hair? Do you like to pull it back, do you like how it frames your face? Do you like the length or the thickness? Do you like how it bounces?

What don't you like? Is it falling flat, thin, do you have time to style it..?

So, I looked at your profile pic and you can get away with anything. Why don't you go a little shorter, say maybe right at your shoulders. You still have weight so it won't afro up, but it is still long enough to style. You can get some really cute layers put in, maybe a side swept bang area. Sebastian's Potion 9 would be an awesome styling product to help with condition and any curl/frizziness you have.

Go on pinterest and look at some hairstyle options for longer hair. I am absolutely loving the loose braids and buns and messy ponytails that are rampantly popular (and easy to do) this year. Just look at them here on a cup of jo's blog!:

I hear ya on the curly hair goin' afro if it's too short!! Still licking childhood wounds :-).

If you want your hair long in the summer I wouldn't do anything too crazy, unless it grows fast. Maybe try a color change? Get a blowout?

I know curly hair, at least mine, takes forever to grow!

Good luck, I'll be checking your post!

how do you know when you need a haircut? When a 4yo says, "wow, Ms. S.! You need a haircut. You got a lotta hair". Just slap me now.... this happened yesterday! :)

how do you know when you shouldn't get a haircut? When it is time for A.F. !! I actually had a stylist ask me that question...in response to my request for "something totally different & perky". LOL

My Sis has a headful of curls/waves. She keeps it in a shoulder-length bob. She occasionally tries to ponytail it....but she has soooo much hair that it requires a industrial-strength bungee cord to hold it! But she just looks perkier & fresher when it's at her shoulders. Any longer & it's a huge head of hair!

Soooo, her style is a lengthened bob cut.....& now that I think about it, OMG! ALL of my friends/family....with the exception of 2 women & the teens....OMG, they all have bobs! Good grief! I wonder if any of them have realized it? ...LOL - thanks for making me laugh! Gotta go, I'm going to call my Sis!

I dont condone this cutting of the hair talk! Do highlights either blonde or redder and a trim.

From your profile picture, I think a pixie cut would be cute.
There are TONS of products to control curls and frizz....I should know! :)

Um....guess you don't like the pixie suggestion......but it would look cute on you.

Ooooh....R.'s PRETTY! I saw your profile pic!

My hair is long (mid back) and thin. I have lots of it, but it's still thin. In order to keep it from looking thin I NEVER cut in layers. I have to keep it all one length and have my stylist cut the ends dry so they are very blunt. But my hair is also straight...so straight that I never have to use a flat iron...

Good luck!

My 2 favorite cuts are

1) super long (mid to lower back) w/ waves ... think Eliza Dushku hair. (I have ringlet curly hair and so style it from ringlets to glossy straight depending on my mood)... but SUCH a pain in winter, takes for freakin' ever to dry!

2) The inverted bob with a lot of wispy/ chunky piecing (think Katie Holmes)

Yeah. Polar opposites. I just went from elbow length to inverted bob because I had shoulder surgery and there was noooooo way I could convince anyone to hold a hairdryer for me for as long as it takes me to blow it out... and wet hair in winter = pneumonia for me. So chop-chop! I do this every 5 or 6 years. Pixie to elbows and back again.

For YOU, though... you have the classic pinup girl look (lucky!) so I would personally stay in that range. Either 20's short, or 40's long.

With your hair type, though, I would think that shorter would equal a LOT more styling time and product. Before cutting it... I would personally play with it long for awhile. Try some different products and styles. Maybe wash and towel mostly dry, and come through a really soft/touchable/shiny gel through it and braid before bed (to unbraid in the morning...hah... I just typoed that to 'unbrain' in the morning. That's just me before coffee. I have no brain when I first wake up!).

BEFORE you cut... also try the "faux bob". This is doing a little french twist at the bottom of your hair and pinning it with the hair loose on top. Gives you a good idea what it would look like at different medium lengths.

I'd ask your husband, too... but that's me. Some men have a real verve for long hair so cutting would be out... and others especially love the spread out all over the pillow in disarray so styling while sleeping might be out. If not... try the braiding, or do-ragging at night.

If I had hair like yours, I wouldn't cut it...just yet. My 17 year old daughter left some of her styling tools at my house. For the first time ever, I used her hair straightener, and let me tell ya', my hair looks cute. It's totally different than I thought it would be. I also tried these hot rod things and those add cute curls and waves to my hair. There are also some cute hair clips and headbands that add a different look. I've also tried those hair pieces to add some volume and those create a new hairstyle too. There are so many new innovative styling tools out there. I would try some of them before you cut your hair.

Just my 2 cents.

My hair was really long too long. It is straight with blonde high lights.. Saw your profile picture very beautiful. I recently just cut 4 inches off had them cut all the layers outsource blunt cut.. Makes it look thicker. It is now just above my bra strap. Then they put a shine treatment semi permanent last 6weeks. I have no bangs and use a flat iron often. So low maintenance but flat iron makes my hair look put together and styled. Some time I slick my hair back with a little gel after the shower and wearable bun. May try that.. But not too short of a cut.. Baby steps with the cut :)
