Help My Baby Won't Stop Crying!

She could have a virus called Hand, Foot, & Mouth. I just went through this last week with my son. He would yell and yell - he was in pain and we thought it was due to his mollers coming in however, when we took him to the Dr. he said it was the virus. There was nothing we could do but give him Tylenol and Motrin (what you are doing now). Im not saying this is what she has, but it is a possibility. My son is also 18 mo old.

I hope you have already taken her to the doctor. I absolutely think it's more than teething. Especially if you are giving that much pain reliever with no relief and she won't suck on her pacifier - my guess in an ear infection.

I would use the teething tablets or the teething drops you get in the baby aisle at any store. Try that along with the pain meds. If that doesn't help then I would take her to the doctor tomarrow to see if she is sick in any way.

I agree with the other moms. Your baby could have a throat or ear infection or both! Take her to your doctor.

Take her to Acute Care which is open on weekends. Have her ears checked asap!

Have you taken her to the doctor yet? Sounds like she might have an ear infection. I know that's what my little one would have when she cried like that. If you've given her Tylenol/Motrin it has to be something worse than teething.

Maybe she has an ear infection or something.

C., i say EAR infection; my daughter 11 months has got them several times. you need an antibiotic.
i would go to dr.s asap.

If she is not sucking on her pacifier, I'll bet it's an ear infection. I never knew when my daughter had one until she wouldn't sleep. She never had any of the other signs. Take her to the dr. and get some help.

If shes crying that much and wont eat or sleep then you need to take her to the Dr or call the dr. Only they can tell you whats wrong, not some random people on mammasource.

Poor thing! Have you tried coating her gums with Orajel or Ambesol? If she is teething that should help. It could also be a sore throat or an ear infection. If she is not better by Monday I would definitley call your pediatrician. Good luck!

Try oragel it is my life saver and get similsan ear drops till you can see the doctor.

It sounds like ears to me. My son has the same behavior when he has an ear infection. First time I also though that he was teething, but than noticed that he was touching his ear and took him to the doctor who discovered that he had a serious infection. Now I know when it starts. Not being able to sleep at night and constant crying are also strong indicators - ear infections are very painful. Wishing your baby to get well soon!

I agree that it sounds like an ear infection. The nerves are connected, so often in children they can feel deferred pain, so they act like it is their mouth, when really its the ear, and sometimes its been the other way around. If she is unable to be consoled, I would not hesitate to take her in. I hope you get it figured out soon, ~A.~

It sounds like an ear infection if she is having pain when sucking. Get her to a doctor if you can this weekend! I hope you both get rest!

My doctor said that teething and ear infections don't go together, but they seemed to with my oldest.

I am so sorry it is so hard to have your little one hurt and you can't figure out what it is. I had a similar story with my little girl and she was in pain I knew it. Finally I got her in to see a doctor who didn't think I was overacting and we found that she had a kidney infection all the time and it just hurt. She cried day and night and we changed her food changed her type of diapers etc. nothing helped. This was caused from her the tube that goes from the kidney and the bladder had developed wrong and was causing her the infections and discomfort. We controlled the infections for a few years in hopes she would grow out of it she did not and she had surgery at 6 years old and has been great ever since, she is 20 now. I am not saying that is your babies problem but sometimes it is not the obvious. I hope it all works out soon for you and your little girl.

I think you should take her to the doctor. It may be also Strep infection of the throat, ask them to test her in the office.

When they are teething they can run a fever and be fussy, but it could also be a multitude of other things.

If you can't see in her mouth, you could stick your finger in and feel around. If you feel points on her gums, you might stay with what you're doing until the doctor's open up on Monday.

But if you don't, & you can't keep her fever down, I strongly suggest taking her to one of the e-cares or something. She could also have strep, an ear infection, or worse.

definitely sounds like an ear infection to me (my 13 month old has had 11 in the last 7 months and we're headed to an ENT so I have lots of experience with them) the fever is worrisome though, b/c that indicates it's gotten pretty severe. I'd have her checked ASAP. Good luck; it's so h*** o* baby and mama! :)

As I understand the post, this has recently started?

Only 2 thoughts, our daughter did that and we got a Swallow Study done, turns out she was aspirating (wrong pipe kind of thing). Look into having one done, if so, they will have you thicken her food with a gel, no biggie. But our daughter screamed every time she ate, now it's all gone. :-)

A far fetched possibility is that she has developed a tumor in her esophagus. A friend's daughter had that and NO ONE diagnosed it for over a year. Very similar symptoms to our issue though. An EGD should find it. But the docs dismissed the idea and therefore prolonged the issue.

When my baby went through that, he had an ear infection! You might want to take her in to the dr or just treat her for an infection to see if that helps. Ear infections mimic teething with the fevor and crying so it is hard to tell. When their ear hurts really bad they refuse to eat, the sucking hurts them, which makes sense. If you have ear drops, use them. If not, a little bit of garlic oil squeezed from a clove will work even better, just makes'em stink to high heavens for a while! Also, the tylenol and pedialyte are good, keep that up. Good luck! I know with my baby, the ear infection had him crying all night and most of the day for a few days until it got better and he is normally a happy baby so I knew it had to be something serious. The Tylanel and ear drops helped out a lot though and I would just pump a lot so he didn't have to lean over to eat.

Cold can help! so put the pacifier on the freezer for a while, that and what you has done is great!

When my daughter was about 9 months old she did that and had Hand, Foot and Mouth. If you can look in her mouth and see if she has little white sores all in her mouth, it might be that. This is a virus, but the doctor can recommend some medicine to help relieve the pain. Good luck!

Ear infection. She can't suck because it causes pressure in the ear. There are lots of home remedies available on the internet. Current research about whether there is a need for antibiotics is mixed. That's your call. But my 15 yrs. of mothering -- with plenty of ear infections in all 3 kids -- tells me this is classic symptomology for ears.

It sounds like something viral to me. Both of my kids have been sick this week with very similar symptoms to your child except mine are old enough to tell me what hurts and they both had fever, stomach pain, nausea and headache. My daughters lasted about 4 days and now shes completely fine and my son just started yesterday so he still feels sick. They also both seem extra tired. I never had to take my daughter to the doctor because luckily I was able to control the fever with tylenol and motrin but my son is refusing meds so I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with him yet.

C., I am so sorry your baby is suffering. I am praying that God grants you wisdom and that your daughter will find relief from her discomfort. To put your mind at ease, call your pediatrician's office. Even if they don't have Saturday hours, most offices have an on-call nurse who will return your call if you leave a message. If you can't reach your pediatrician, find out if your insurance provider has a nurse hotline you can call. Perhaps it has nothing to do with her mouth.

My daughter is 9 months and has a fever today, so we called the nurse and she said that babies don't get fever's when they are teething. I agree with previous response about it being an ear infection. GL
