Help! Somebody Is Peeing in My Daughters Closet!

Ok, well I think its peeing anyway. We have 3 cats. One is a 2 year old, female, "diva". Recently we got 2 kittens. One female, one male. They are 8 weeks old. The 2 yr old female is not happy about the other cats being here. We have 3 litter box's that are cleaned daily. In the last week or so, I've noticed a horrible smell in my daughter room, turned out it was the closet. One of the cats is either peeing or spraying(?) in there.
First of all, how do i find out which one it is? Second of all, I'm getting the male neutered next week, but is it possible to be spraying this soon? Third, do you think it could be the old female just being jealous?
I dont want any of the cats to go, but I CANT deal with that smell.
Thanks!

I am wondering why you would have three cats with small children in the home. I do not advocate cats in homes with small kids because of the allergens they bring into the house. Then there is the dust and particulates being kicked up from 3 litter boxes being stirred up all the time.
I love cats but I have 2 children with asthms which cats and litter boxes would drive up a wall.
There is no way to stop a cat peeing or spraying once they start. You will need to tear up teh carpet and the padding and treat or replace the subflooring to get rid of the smell.
I would seriously rethink 3 cats.

Hi S.,
Another good way to get pee smell out is plain old Listerine (original) and then sprinkle pepper in the area. They won't go where the pepper is.
You might try confining the cats so you can figure out which one it is. Hopefully this is a transition thing, but you want to nip it in the bud right away.

Good luck,
K.

My friend had this problem with there cat after they had him fixed. (They waited until he was older to do it and he got pissed)The vet suggested that they confine him in a small room (like a bathroom etc) that they put food, water and his cat box in and leave him there for several days. Just going in to check on his food and water and to see if he was using his litter box. After several days let him out into a little larger area if possible. If he sprays again then confine him back to the small area again for several more days. This should take care of the situation most times. But the vet did tell them that some cats just do not like change and there is nothing you can do about it except get rid of them unless you want your stuff ruined.

Good luck

Thousands of years ago cats were worshiped as gods, cats have not forgotten this. :-))
It is probably the older cat indignant that you brought 2 new kittens in the house. Pet Smart has some great odor and urine remover products and a spray that you can use to deter the cat from going into the closet. Keeping the door shut is not always a solution cats are very smart and will learn to open doors.
You might want to check the clothes in the closet to be sure that they have not picked up the smell.
I had a cat sick with cancer and she peed in my home office. I have slipcovers in my furniture in there and found that if I toss them in the washer with Mr Clean with Frebreeze it gets the smell out. You may need to spray Frebreeze or similar product several times over the next several months to get rid of any leftover odors.

I am sure you will get a lot of advice on how to deter the cats from the closet but I have one question-Whose house is it? Yours or your cats? I am not a fan of cats so that is easy to say but I have to say when I walk into a house and smell cat pee-it is unbearable. My advice is get rid of the cats. Sorry!!

I would say it's definitely your 2 year old cat spraying. Marking territory spray really smells nasty! I recommend Nature's Miracle to deal with the smell--not sure what to do about your jealous cat. Maybe someone else will have some advice there--you could also ask your vet! Good luck!

I agree. It is the older cat that is spraying. Before I had my son, I rescued abused cats. I ended up with five at one point. When we moved, the cats got upset and pee'd on all of our boxes of household items, including clothes. The oldest (21 yrs old) recently pee'd on a bag of clothes I received from my aunt. Grrrr.

Anyhow, here are some things I recommend. First, get a black light (Amazon has good prices) so you can target all the areas the cat pee'd . If you don't the cat WILL return to do it again.

Here is a sure fire recipe for removing cat urine odor from carpet. These items are things most people have in their house already.

Ingredients

Baking Soda
White Vinegar
Dishwashing Detergent
3 % Hydrogen Peroxide

1. If the cat urine has dried and you are not sure where the soiled area use a black light to detect it. In a darkened room the black light will pick up urine and other stains. Hand held black lights can be purchased for between $15 to $25 on Amazon.

2. Next, wet the area with a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water. Make sure you use enough of the solution to penetrate the fibers deep down. Allow it to almost dry. You can assist drying by blotting with paper towels as described above. If you own a wet and dry vacuum extractor use that to remove excess moisture.

The acidity of the vinegar will neutralize the ammonia in the cat urine.

3. Apply a liberal amount of baking soda over the affected area and drizzle it with a quarter of a cup of hydrogen peroxide mixed with a teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent. (not caustic detergent that you put in a dishwasher) Work it in with a scrubbing brush or your fingers (be sure to wear rubber gloves) to dissolve the baking soda and work it down into the carpet. Allow it to dry. Then vacuum.

Important little tid-bit. Check house hold cleaners for ammonia. Never use ammonia or ammonia-based products on the carpet. One of the ingredients of urine is ammonia and your cat may well be encouraged to re-offend in the same area if it detects the smell of ammonia.

FOR CLOTHES and LAUNDRY. Use this method on your clothing, bedding, rugs or anything you think you can stuff in the washer (not including your cat). Simply add ¼ cup apple cider vinegar along with your normal laundry detergent, start the washer and VOILA!

Likely it is behavior from the older cat. You may also want to have all of them checked (or at least the older one) for UTI which can be another cause of improper urination.
