So What Happened?

Update: I think that we are going with the name Maddox Gannon.

Thanks to everyone for all the great responses! It is helping us at least eliminate some names and helping us to add names to our list that we hadn't thought about before. Maddox is a boy for those of you who asked, and his older brother's name is Jaxson Kyler. My parents call him x-man, so we thought that it would be fun to have more that one x-man in the family. We enlisted Jaxson's help in picking out his baby brothers name, and out of all the names we picked he could say Maddox the best, so we went with that one. Maddox and Jaxson also both have 6 letters in their name. We are leaning toward a couple of names now, but will probably decide at his birth. We are having him in 4 & 1/2 weeks. His birthday and my others sons birthdays with be backwards of each other. 5-2-08 vs. 8-2-05 Thanks again for all the great ideas! K.

Hi K.,

Consider giving your baby your last name as a middle name. that's what we did with my youngest son and i think he likes it. and it adds a connection for us since my last name is different from his last name [his Dad's].

Other ideas are using a family name like your grandfather's. My eldest son's middle name is the same as his Dad's first name and my Dad's middle name. My second son has his Dad's middle name for his middle name. this is a nice connection too. So my middle son - who is now 25! is Troy Alexander after his dad, David Alexander. And the Troy didn't come for us until he was three days old! It's very fun to remember these naming stories.

best wishes to you,
K. C

Hello:) we decided to take a look at our family tree, on both sides, when we had difficulties coming up with a middle name. the perfect middlename just popped out at us. it happened to be a maiden name of a 3x great grandmother. a name that we would have never dreamt up, one that we love, and it's meaningful. just an idea. good luck. i love the name Maddox. very unique:)

I love it when the name has sort of meaning or family connection. I have seen it a lot where the son's middle name is the mothers maiden name...I JUST LOVE THIS IDEA. BTW I am a labor and delivery nurse and I have seen it all, If the name stands for something or someone it adds a wonderful bond and is a great name even if they don't "go together" very well.

Hi K.,

I used a website to help find a middle name for our youngest son. All you do is put the first name in and last name (or last name initial) and it provides a multitude of selections. Even names that you would have never thought of. Here is the link: http://www.babynamegenie.com/baby-middle-names

After you enter the information, it will only bring up a few at a time. You have to keep clicking on "get more names" or whatever the name of the link is, to make more appear. I was just thinking of some names myself, and the first one that came to mind was Maddox Nathaniel....long name yes, but a strong name.

My 3 kids have the middle names of (deceased) family members as their middle name.
Michael Dean(Mary Dean-MIL, passed away before he was born)
Jessica Jane(Dorothy Jane-My grandmother)
Jacob Leslie(James Leslie-Hubby's Gradfather)
With a "new/current" first name, I think I would go with a classic middle name.

What ever you do just consider what his initials are going to spell. If you use a middle name that starts with a vowel like an O then his initials will spell MOM or an A will end up being MAM.

I like Reece, the traditional spelling is Rhys. Like others have mentioned I would look for a family name or a name from your heritage.

Good luck!

Cut Maddox a break--if you're going to give him a first name that is unusual, trendy, or difficult to spell, he'll appreciate a middle name that he can fall back on when he's older and wants to be taken seriously as a professional or tires of explaining his name to every new person he meets--perhaps there's a family name like "William" or "Robert" that you can use. By doing that you honor family AND allow your child a reasonable option to a funky first name.

First, congrats on your new one! You've received a ton of input, but I'll throw in my 2 cents. Decide what overall 'feel' you want for your baby's name-- modern, classic, natural, familial, etc. Lots of names sound good with Maddox, so you're lucky there!

Modern/contemporary? Rhys, Jace, Quinn
Classic? William, Alexander, Thomas
Natural? Sage, Wolf, Fields
Familial? Go back a generation or two and find a relative with a middle or surname you like, i.e., Niles, Stafford, Wilson, etc.

Best of luck with your babe and your growing family!

Hi K.!

This is a fun one to respond to! I read some psychology research that suggested that your initials/acronym influence your mental health either positively or negatively depending on the combination! So, for example you would want to avoid names that when combined read S.A.D. or B.U.T. or M.A.D. and lean more towards those with positive connotations, like S.U.N. That being the case (or at least a possibility), how about Gabriel as a middle name. Looks like your last name begins with an M. Then, he would have M.G.M. and the association would be of powerful lions and great entertainment (as in MGM studios). Just a thought. Have fun and good luck! S. K.

Maddox is a strong first name, so I came up with Quinn, Olin, Hunt, Caton, Seth & Eli, as some I felt sounded good. Print them on cards (Maddox Quinn....etc...) and after saying them several times a day, one will sound just right. (As we don't know your last name, that may throw it off entirely!!) Of course, we always wait till they are born, as sometimes they just don't look (or act) like any of the names we picked. Good luck & CONGRATULATIONS on the upcoming new family member. I would think that the middle name would all depend on the last name, as you would not want to give him a name of maddox miram middleton, as it would be way to much with the "m's" so it would be a matter of personal decision.just think of the people in your family and how some of them would be honored to have their names used as a middle name for maddox.
Best of luck in your decision for that all important middle name.

I don't understand why some people have to be so rude. There was no reason for her to say that about the name Maddox. Yes, this name is for a boy. It's not a unisex name. The name is not made up. The name is not my style but it's still a great name! When I had my son (Gordon Oliver)the nurse or whoever she was "joked" and said that she thought the file was for someone on (whatever number) floor but then she saw that Gordon was only two days old. I've gotten asked is that after your two grandpa's and whatnot and it's like no, I just liked the names. I say just go with what you love. If you want to honor someone in the family great, if you don't that's fine too. I do like the idea of giving him a middle name that is in a different style than Maddox. Because when they are born you don't know what they are going to look like or act like when they get older. It's nice to have an option. I like the suggestions of Alexander, James, William. What about Elijah? Or Collin? Although, the flow isn't the best with Collin. Good luck K.!

And don't pay any attention to that response that said the name is out there--I love the name Maddox & it's a great power name--definitely to be taken seriously!!! How rude for someone to say that--maybe she's just lacking a little creativity! I don't think there's anything wrong with trying to give a child a name that isn't the same as 1/2 their class! I grew up (obviously still am) an A.--and imagine how many there were in M. class--in elementary, M. name was A. B. --not just M. first name like everyone else!!!

Anyways, sorry about that, I just couldn't believe the nerve of some people--they are definitely allowed to have their opinion, but ever hear of the Golden Rule?????

Good luck, let us know what you come up with!!

Are you trying to go with something different or traditional. I am kind of old fashioned in that i like to go with what is the dads first or middle name or his dads or my dad etc... and find a name with meaning instead of ooohhh does this sound sooo cool or not. Otherwise i think there are some stand bys for boys just like ann and Marie are for girls and that is John, James, Michael it seems like i hear alot and i think John or James sounds good with Maddox - i dont know your last name to see if it flows but also having dads name in there usually sounds good because you are use to hearing his first name with his last name like John Doe so maddox john doe would seem like it flows because uts already a name you are familar with if that makes sense.

answers from Rochester on

John..........if the child is a boy and, if the last name has three syllables or more, keep the middle name to one syllable.
Keep in mind what the initials will be. MJM might be good. Stay away from middle initial starting with a G as you would not want the initials to be MGM.

If the child should happen to be a girl........Maddox Elizabeth sounds good. One never knows what gender people attach to a first name. Maddox would seem to be a male name to me.

Hope this helps.
