Help with Potty Training a Boy

My son just turned two in Feb. and I started potty training him last Thursday. He has not worn a diaper since then (night or day). He will go everytime I ask him to, but he will not tell me when he needs to go. I have a daughter who is 3 and she was very easy to potty train (took 3 days) and she always told me when she needed to go. If I don't take him he will have accidents. He is not having accidents at night or during naps. Everyone I talk to said that boys are just different and don't compare him with my daughter. That I understand, but do you think maybe he is just not getting it and I should stop. I hate to go back to diapers, but I feel like he has no idea what is going on. Any advice with potty training a boy would be so greatly appreciated. Also if you have potty trained a boy how long did it take.

What can I do next?

I have a five year old boy who still has 'accidents' with defecation, although he has been completely potty trained for months at a time since shortly before his fourth birthday. I have a 3 year old (38 months) who can pee in the potty on command and usually does it himself (can go dry in a pullup for DAYS) - but sometimes decides whatever he is doing is more important, and soaks one. He does not poo in any sort of potty for any imaginable reward. :(

My five year old has to wash his underwear after accidents, my 3 year old still wears pullups.

Good luck.

hang in there! boys are slower to train, he actually sounds better than i would expect at his age! i tried to train my first son at 3, and it was a mess...i waited 4 months, and he trained in a weekend! if you don't think he gets it...then i would wait...cuz i could tell a distinct difference of when they get it...and when they don't care. my 2nd son trained at age 3, and he knew what he was doing, but didn't care about accidents as much, so that's a little different. but i knew he knew....so if you have doubts that he's understanding (which at his age would be quite normal)...then you might wait a few months, then try again...
good luck! :)

Two is pretty young to be potty training a boy, especially during nap time and at bedtime. Personally, I would put him in diapers during naps and at night. I would just work on one thing at a time.

First of all great job on what he has accomplished so far, being that he just turned 2, is going in the potty at your request and no accidents at night/nap! I still need to potty train my son, but my daughter didn't tell me when she needed to go at first either, I just had to always be on the look out for her potty signals. It took a few weeks and a few accidents for her to finally tell me, I need to go potty. If I were you, I would not revert back to diapers, it may only confuse him. Rather, keep with it and soon enough he will be telling you himself that he needs to go potty.

it took my nephew 6 day today all you need to do is twice a hour take him to the restoom and have him sit on the pot until he used the restoom during the day.and switching him to diaper is going to confuse him alot.boys are very hard to potty train.

Hang in there. I cant believe how lucky you are that he is doing this well so far. And really, it may be a good while before he understands the signals his body is sending, that is a good bit of the reason people wait until they are a bit older. But, I still say reminding him is better than changing a diaper right??!! My son is the same way, and a month later, he regressed. (he is 2 also) I refused to go back to diapers, much to the disapproval of those who thought I was doing it too early) and he has gotten so much better! I am still reminding him, but I can go for a few hours in between, so it does not bother me much. I think he will get it, and I do give him a treat only if he tells me he has to go potty, and he goes. If I remind him, we dont give him treats anymore. Cant say for sure if it will help, but I can say that you should just keep doing what you are doing, and be prepared for a set back at some point. Just stick to it:)~A.~

I asked about this I think when my 2.5 or 3 (he is now 3.5)and got lots of respones...some were crazy like saying maybe he had bedwetting problems....anyways one mom said that no until 6 to start to worry about bed wetting and in time boys will get it. Just until recently he has been waking up asking to use the bathroom. He didn't have a problem awake just when he would sleep. So I started to wake him at night before I slept(midnight) to use the bathroom did this for about a week. It worked a few days then it didn't. My neighbor with a 2 yr old girl told me that her daughter was totally trained so I told my son about it and how she was getting to be a big girl and that changed everything.....he wanted to let me know he was a big boy as well and not a baby. So I think it just will happen when he wants it to and really understanding. I used all my diapers and didn't want to buy another pack to waste so I just washed sheets everyday for about a week straight and now he is totally dry!!!!! Also, my nephew who is 10 potty trained him in the beginning during the day. The male bonding and have peeing contests helped.
