Where to start... my daughter is 6 months and has started to teeth. We give her Motrin,Tylenol, teethers and our finger to chew on. But at this point she is so crabby she will not drink a bottle and wakes up several times each night. I am desperate for some advise. My husband took her in to see a dr. today to see if she had an ear infection and her ears were clear! Help

What can I do next?

J.,

My son is working on his thirteenth tooth this week and each and every one has been a pain for him. Thankfully until she gets to her molars once a tooth starts to pop out the pain usually subsides - molars take forever. I'm guessing each child is unique, but my son usually got two teeth at a time. Just when I would feel one poking through I'd find a matching lump on the other side of his mouth. In addition to the Motrin I would recommend teething gel. We have used several different kinds and they all tend to work similarly. Our son hated the taste right after we applied it but I could tell it helped him right away. It was especially helpful at bedtime to get him over that hump until he fell asleep. Frozen washcloths work well for us and strangely so does letting him chew on his toothbrush.

Not that it's incredibly helpful right now but take comfort in that most babies don't teeth all the time. Give it a week or two and she'll wake up happy again one day - until the next one at least!

You've probably also tried "numbzit" and other topical teething stuff, but you didn't list that so I thought I would throw that out there just in case you haven't tried any of those. My kiddos were into the ice cube in a washcloth to chew on - they never really cared for the store bought freezie rings. I used to also keep their pacifiers in the fridge - they liked the cold :)

I know it stinks for all of you, but before you know it, you will be wondering where did the time go and teething will seem like a distant memory.

Good luck!

Try popcicles or a washclothe hat is slihtly damp and then place in the frozen food section of your refrdgerator. This is ease the pain and let him enjoy his game It i so important that children get enough liquids or they can get seriously ill. Even popsicles have enough fluid in them to help.

Hi J.!
Have you tried Hyland's teething tablets? In my opinion, they work better than Motrin or Tylenol.
Also, when my daughter was teething I finally tried elevating the head of her crib by putting a thick book under the two legs of her crib. Lying down is miserable when you have teeth or gun pain! It really helped my daughter.
Does your child take a pacifier? If not, mabey you could give one to her to see if it relieves her pain. The sucking motion gives much relief for teething pain.

Good luck! It's a HARD stage!

My son used to like his pacifier refrigerated/frozen. This really helped with the front teeth, but less for teeth that are farther back. Now, he is getting molars and turns his paci sideways and gnaws on it. He rarely actually sucks on it anymore! The other night, he woke up and was just screaming inconsolably. We gave him tylenol, which usually helps even initially because he's gotten used to the idea that "medicine" can help. He just continued to scream, which is really unlike him-he's usually pretty calm about things! Finally, we put baby anbesol on his paci (he won't let us put it on with our fingers because he smells it coming and of course, it doesn't taste real good) and he was instantly quiet and cuddled in to go back to sleep- he fell back asleep shortly after.

With reference to your 6 months daughter tells me that her little gums are still that soft and tender so they pains/hurts her. My advice to you is that I would like to recommend the Aloe Vera Gelly, it soothe the gum and it also good for other things like burns, insect bites, etc.

Hello J.,
let me just start off my saying: Been there, done that! My son started teething at 5 months and was unbearable for a few days. I would say to stick with the Tylenol but add in teething gel and teething tablets(these are usually at the pharmacy counter in most stores...i know for sure at target). they are all safe to be mixed together and the tablets work WONDERS! Also, my son likes to bite down on cold celery. keep with the night comfort, she needs it and know that it won't (hopefully) last longer than a week. Hope this helps!

p.s. seriously, teething tablets are amazing!!!

You could rub baby abesol on her gums or brandy---it is something that my great grandmother used to do and it works. We also let our son suck on those freeze pops--just the outside and wrapped it in a towel because it was too cold for his hands. The frozen teethers work great --small enough for them to hold. Good luck

my son chewed on cold wash clothes and frozen breast milk he did all his teeth in 2 sections at 4-6 (8 teeth) and then at 15 months(all the rest including 1st molars). he used a pacifier too so that helped. the dentist told us to not use the numbing gels too often as they do more bad then good when over used. they said use it as a last resort

As Anne Marie suggest Hylands Teething Tablets work wonders!! I buy them at Walmart (in baby section), Walgreens and Target, spendy ($5-$6 a bottle) but worth it. We used them on 2 of our three grandchildren and what a difference they made.
Our doctor didn't recommend the numbing gels because they can numb the throat and that in itself can cause problems.
Like a lot of other ladies suggested a frozen wash cloth is good too. I even bought one of those mesh bags that you put fruit in so they can chew on it and put in broken ice cubes. Messy but effective.....
Good luck, it seems once the first one comes in the rest get easier. JMO
