HELP.....finding A Unique Name for Our Son!!!

Updated on March 26, 2011
E.T. asks from Torrance, CA
73 answers

I'm 34 weeks pregnant with son #2. My husband and I can't agree on a name. We both agree we want something different and uncommon. I've probably suggested 50 names to him and nothing seems right. If you have any suggestions, please send them my way. It doesn't have to be a name you like, just something unique you've heard! Please no comments about teasing, just names:) Thank you.

Hmm, I like time honored names. My boys are Daniel Patrick and James Joseph. Both names are above reproach, have tolerable corresponding nicknames, and frankly ARE kind of 'unique' these days amidst all the foofy stylish names!

I like E names...Emmett, Everett, Eli, Elijah can be nicknamed Eli (so can Elliott). I heard the name "Angus" recently. Don't choose this...I don't tend to judge, but I couldn't help but think he was named after steak.

Just in case you're not tired of replies ...

My husband and I thought of musicians and artists and writers we liked and went from there. Our kids have 'normal' first names and unusual middles.

Madeline Dearie - Dearie is from jazz singer Blossom Dearie
Samuel Wyeth - Wyeth is from the artist Andrew Wyeth

Believe it or not, when I was in labor for our son, my husband wanted the middle name Tyrannosaurus for Sam. And I wish I were kidding about that!

Good luck and congratulations!

Here are a few unique names in my family/friends' kids:
Griffin, Cameron, Hunter, Logan, Clay (short for Barclay), Tanner, Jordan, Garrett, Marshall, Toper (short for Christopher), and my dad was Barney (ruined by the purple dinosaur!)

You might check your ancestors, there are some great traditional names that aren't widely used anymore and end up being unique. I and other family members have enjoyed having a "family" name (first or middle).
Good luck, we were kicking around names and still deciding while I was in labor in the hospital!

Look back in your family tree - you'll get a lot of different names!!

We had a Theodore, Thadius and oh my - I can't remember them all right now.

Believe it or not, Gregory is not a common boys name. That's my oldest son's name and he's in the 5th grade - in that time we've only run into 3 other Greg's. Now, Nicholas - well....that's a TOTALLY different story.

Logan, Levi, Aaron, Cameron, I just woke up and haven't had my caffeine...let me mull this over and I'll edit my answer!

Okay- now with some caffeine in me:

Victor (Vic)
Nolan
Owen
Vincent (Vince, Vinnie)
Ivan
Issac (this is the one I wanted for my son - however, we named him after his paternal grandfather and maternal grandfather)
Keith (although with Keith Urban's popularity - the name is starting to get big again).
Grant
Gavin
Garrett

If you have a historical background or even from different countries - look for names from there - my husband's family is from Russia - Gregorio (hence his name Greg). If you have a Greek background - there are some good Greek names ...think of the Greek Gods...

If you choose to do unique, at least try to have some sort of unique naming story and not just some made up something or other. A great example might be to give your child your maiden name, his MIL's maiden name, his father's middle name, or a name that has a story behind it.

Our second son was born around Christmas so we chose a first and a middle name that were found in movies set during Christmas. I will be shocked if any other kid in his class has his name as it is definitely uncommon but at the same time it is not anything way out there or totally made up. Our firstborn's first name was after his grandfather who died that year and his middle name is the name of the groom whose wedding we were attending (with an open bar, mind you) when we conceived him. Both of my boys will have fun stories to tell about their name.

Look names are important, but remember children can be cruel and what ever name you give your son he has to go to school with it, plus in kindergarten they are expected to spell and write their name. What is unique to you may be weird to someone else, and visa versa, I went by the meaning of the name as well as the name itself. My husband's name is Edwin so of course our first born son proudly carries his fathers name but it means best/good friend to all. We named are second son Andrew as an adult now he goes by Drew, but his name means manly, and we picked Samantha for our daughter because it means listener and we think it;s a beautiful name, she;s 21 and her best friend is Chinese and her name is Samantha as well. I like strong names for boys here's a few ideas that won;t get them beat up at school

Dylan
Victor
Mason
Cane
Andre
Chance
Chandler
Diego
Isaiah
Thoes are just a few. J.

Not a comment about teasing just saying, as a person with a tricky name to spell and pronounce (Corinne, pronounced Core-in, not Connie, Corrine, Karen, Karin, Corn, Quinn, Krin, Kareen... you get my point) See if you can go with something unusual that isn't also impossible to spell and pronounce. It really is a burden to go through your entire life with a name that people screw up from every angle possible at any and all opportunities.

Here's some off-the-beaten-path boy names I've liked:
Desmond
August
Tate
Caspar
Harbor
Uriah
Zane
Kit
Cosmo

hehehe... go to the baby names sites and print out a list of 200 names you like- then have him circle ones that he might consider. Try non "american" names from other countries, or names that have gone out of style...

OR get inspired by traits you want in your baby and look up names with that meaning! Like : Arwan, Prewit, and Isamu all mean "brave" in different languages! (So does the name "Dung"- but that would NOT be a wise choice in our country)

It was hard to settle on our daughters name- Rhiannon... when we had her. I literally went through hundreds of girl names to settle on one my husband and I both liked.

This time we have settled on one boy name "Gary"- which was easy because it is my husband and his father's name... and one girl's name "Zoie" which was picked out of about 300 names! It is good in one way that your husband is being "difficult"- because that shows how much he cares. Be persistent and you are bound to find a name soon! Also, if he seems to not like anything you bring up- tell him to go find 50 names he likes online or out of a book- and you'll look through them and see if you like any of his! Get the first name down to a few (maybe 5) and then pick the middle names to match. I found that picking middles was MUCH easier than picking first names!

Good Luck and Congratulations!

Look into your heritage and that of your husband's, and that would be a good place to start looking at unique names. The name discussion can be tricky. I'm from a culture that uses Sanskrit names while my husband is of European descent (German-Irish-French mix), so we agreed to have names from both cultures for our daughters. For boys, the Sanskrit names we would have considered were:

Krisna (can call him Kris for short)
Surya
Arjun
Ram
Jai
Arya

What's wrong with old fashioned names, or family names? Those are really "in" now. Look in your family tree on both sides at first and last names. Some last names are great for first or middle names. Failing that, you can go to Baby Name Wizard online. It has a really neat interactive graph, articles, lists, and history. I found it to be very helpful.

But on another note... why does everyone have to have crazy unique names with unusual spellings? Every kid had some kind of bizarre name now, and I can guarantee you they'll hate their name whether you name them Lincoln or Jax or Brian. (My 12 year old nephew is named "August" and he hates it. He said he'd like to change it to "Kevin".)

In a sea of Ashleigh's and Natalee's and Raychul's, we chose to name our daughter Lucy. No Loocee, or Lucie, or Luceigh. Just plain L-u-c-y. Everyone loves it, no one will ever misspell it, and its a family name so we don't care how many others there are because it means something special to us, and she can be proud she was named for interesting and important women in our family, and not just because we thought the name was cool.

And consider it before you go choosing an ordinary name with a weird spelling (like Brayan for Brian or Mhaxx for Max or Jakub for Jacob), which you may think it's cool and different, but your kid is the one who will have to live with it. I'm speaking from personal experience.

I love the name Sterling...however with our last name the poor kid would have been mocked all over the place...

Our son is Cael (pronounced Kale)...means warrior, since we almost lost him it fits him well. (although Sterling would have too just the whole last name situation)...

Also my name is Melonie and I have gone through my whole life with a unique name and spelling. It used to irritate me to no end that ppl couldn't spell it. But you know what...it made me who I am...

Both my hubby and I have names spelled differentely and so do our kiddos.

I am Welsh, so I like Welsh names - how about
Ioan (pronounced yo-ann) WElsh for John

Jago (pronounced ya-go) welsh for James

Geraint pronounced gear eint

Rhyddian pronounced rith eean

Rhodri (rod ree)

these all might be a bit weird for you though lol

I also like Gray, simple, but strong, like gray wolf.
