Hives are usually a sign of an allergic reaction. It's definitely something worth calling the pediatrician about so they can take a look at it and determine if it really is hives or something else that looks similar in appearance.

seasonal allergies? Is there something you treat your lawn with at this time of year? How old is he? Could it be an emotional reaction to something that is coming up like the start of school? Good luck figuring this one out, maybe a trip to the allergist would shed some light.

Probably an allergy to something. (I was just on line googling allergic reactions right now because my son broke out in hives this morning!)

I just gave him some Children's Benedryl to see if that calms things down. If it does, it is very likely an allergy.

This happens to my son as well. The pediatrician told me that he has very sensitive skin and I am always putting a prescription hydrocortisone cream on him. I don't know how bad the hives are that you are talking about, so this may not relate to your situation. My son will get small itchy bumps all over his back. I am very interested in your answers and hope you get a solution. Good luck!

Hives are really weird. Has he been sick? When children get hives, about 50% of the time it's actually a reaction to an illness. It's as though the body is having an allergic reaction to the sickness. As they get older and the immune system matures, it stops happening.

It could also be that he's allergic to something that is blooming or pollinating or whatever outside right now. I would think it would be happening over a longer time though. Allergies can also be unpredictable because they can get worse depending on what else is going on. If you are having an allergic reaction to one thing, you can have a stronger reaction to another allergen than you normally would have. In other words, it could be a combination, or worse at one time than another time.

Some signs of allergies in kids are dark circles under the eyes (allergy shiners) and a permanent crease across the top of the nose from rubbing it, and itchy eyes.

When my son was younger, he frequently broke out in hives. Sometimes it would get so bad I had to take him in to a pediatric urgent care.

I was told there, and by my own Dr., that hives are very difficult to diagnose, since many things can cause them. Viruses can cause hives, as can allergies. Since your son seems to get them at the same time of the year, it suggests allergies. Perhaps something is blooming at that time that he is allergic to.

Benadryl helps. If it gets really bad, your pediatrician can prescribe something, but in most cases Benadryl helped us. They can be very disturbing.

I'd definitely bring it up at his next well check up.

Good luck!

How old is he? I did the same thing from the time I was about 6 until I was about 25.. (last year.. lol)

Sometimes it would be twice a year, and my mom said it would happen around the change of seasons. Unfortunately we never really knew what it was! I just seemed to outgrow it over the years.

I would wake up with hives that would last for days. Sometimes they moved to different areas. And if it was on my hands & feet, they would be swollen.

Try Zyrtec to see if that helps him. You could also try taking him to an allergist, but sometimes they just can't figure it out. I had to take Benadryl (which put me to sleep) until they came out with Zyrtec.

I think hives are a mysterious thing. When I was between 18 to 22 or 23 I used to get them every once in a while if I took a pain reliever such as Tylenol or Ibuprofen. I would take Zyrtec and it would clear up. I also had hives a few times after eating shrimp and crawfish. Pretty weird. I haven't had them in a while, though.

My daughter had them as an allergic reaction to the yellow Triaminic.

Maybe it is something he eats in the summer that is different. Corn on the cob? Watermellon? I break out in hives when I eat crab meat.
