Homecoming "Mum" Texas Style

When my daughter told me she needs a homecoming mum, I thought she meant a $10 corsage! I'm from IA and this whole concept of a huge, expensive homecoming mum seems ridiculous, frivolous, and not like a thing I'd want hanging from my body. Yet I'm told we need to get her a homecoming mum and that they can easily cost $70-100. This expense is not coming at a good time, on top of all the other homecoming expenses (that seem more justifiable to me). I really don't see myself spending hours figuring out how to put one together from a kit. She said they are selling them at lunch at school but they're really pricey. Any suggestions, ladies? I'm just disgusted with the whole thing. I already spent $150 on a dress for her tonight, plus it's shoes, coverup, $25 for the dance, the meal before, the meal after, the game and then nearly $100 to drop on this stupid use-once mum thing????!!! She does not have a date for homecoming. FWIW, we live in Plano TX (PESH). She doesn't have a job b/c of all her AP & honors classes, NHS, etc.

What can I do next?

Do you know of anyone who would be able to make one for you? They are actually not hard to make at all. It's the supplies that are pricey. But if you're smart, you can find the supplies cheap depending on where you go and if you're using coupons.

Good Luck!

My daughter will be attending the PESH homecoming with her boyfriend. My daughter goes to Plano West so we have 2 Homecomings! Yeah!

Most of the kids go to the Mum Shop located at Parker and 75. I was amazed when I saw that place. Whomever dreamed up that business is brilliant... they are racking in some major money right now. Students go through the supplies, choose what they want on the mum and how many mums (daughter's bf got her a triple and it was $130) (bf's garter was $70) and then you give your selections to the staff, pay for the mum and check online to see when it is done.

Boyfriend paid for daughter's mum and daughter paid for boyfriend's garter. Boyfriend is paying for the tickets and dinner. For West homecoming, daughter is paying for tickets, dinner, his garter.
You can probably pick out minimal decorations and stay in a certain price range. The Mum Shop does have a website.

I was quite surprised as well. When I grew up, we had mums but they were live. The last 2 yrs the cheerleaders have received mums that are very nice. The mums my daughter has received are hanging on her wall in her bedroom.

My daughter does not have a job because school is her job. She is in mostly AP classes and a JV cheerleader. She will not be at the PESH homecoming game because she is cheering for West that night. They are going to the dance on Sat night, dinner with a large group of students and the boys are splitting the cost of a limo so no one has to drive.

We got the dress last week at BeBe and she'll wear the same dress to West Homecoming. She already had the shoes from the cheer banquet in January so I lucked out on the shoes!

I chalk itup to part of her high school experience and I want her to have a great high school esperience. Expensive, yes but it is a huge part of high school.

Check out the Mum Shop and see if they can help you. They certainly have everything to choose from!!

Sorry I don't have an answer for you (my kids are 1 and 3--- so I still have a few years to worry about this), but I live in Frisco and I'm also from Iowa! It's crazy how many Iowans escape that state; I see a license plate from the Hawkeye state at least once a week!

Her date is supposed to pay for her mum, and she is to pay for his garter. Garters are much smaller and cheaper. Many times Albertsons and Kroger have garters already put together. You can just go to Hobby Lobby and get things (they are pretty inexpensive) and glue them on. Many hobby Lobbys have garters already put together waiting to be accessorized. It doesn't take long to glue things on, and like I said, garters are much smaller. It should not cost as much as you are describing!! You can also look on craigslist for people who make them. A lady I worked with use to make them and charge far less, she always advertised there.

I was raised in Texas. I have always thought it's a silly tradition!! However, the tradition does call for the boy to pay for her mum.

Silly and I'm from Texas. I always thought the huge ones looked ridiculous!

Anyway, I would go to a florist. Tell them how much you are willing to pay and see what you can get. The more junk you put on it, the more expensive it will be. You can go to Michaels and find stuff to add to it. Or get a kit. Or look on Craigslist. Lots of options.
